7 th AA294 Seminar on Case Studies of Aircraft Design Beauty in Airplane Design Time and Venue: Time: 2:15pm to 3:45pm, Wednesday, 11 th May, 2011 Venue: classroom 300‐300. Short Biography: Mr. Mark Page graduated from the University of Illinois in 1979 with a B.S. degree in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering. In Aerospace, Mr. Page has 18 years of experience at McDonnell Douglas, and was a Research Fellow. Mr. Page was the Technical Program Manager for the NASA Blended‐Wing‐Body (BWB) Program, and co‐inventor of the BWB configuration with Dr. Robert Liebeck and Blaine Rawdon of Boeing. Subsequently, Mr. Page accumulated 13 years of experience in racecar development , while also teaching as an Adjunct Professor in the Aerospace Engineering department at the University of Southern California. Mr. Page is presently the Chief Scientist at Swift. At Swift, he has conducted design work for the Eclipse Concept Jet and the KillerBee UAV. Abstract: It's often said "if it looks good, it will fly good". Most would agree that this is an overstatement. Yet most people also believe this is mainly true. In this lecture we'll look at a parade of beautiful and ugly airplanes, vote on our favorites, and compare them to an international survey conducted last year. Next we'll look at reasons for a link between beauty and performance. And finally we'll appeal to principles of facial beauty. As an addendum we'll look at the Eclipse Concept Jet story. In 2007, Swift was secretly contracted to design, build and fly a small bizjet in 200 days. The relevance of beauty will be explored in this real‐life example.
