TimeandVenue:Time:2:15pmto3:45pm,Wednesday,11thMay,2011Venue:classroom300‐300.ShortBiography:Mr.MarkPagegraduatedfromtheUniversityofIllinoisin1979withaB.S.degreeinAeronauticalandAstronauticalEngineering.InAerospace,Mr.Pagehas18yearsofexperienceatMcDonnellDouglas,andwasaResearchFellow.Mr.PagewastheTechnicalProgramManagerfortheNASABlended‐Wing‐Body(BWB)Program,andco‐inventoroftheBWBconfigurationwithDr.RobertLiebeckandBlaineRawdonofBoeing.Subsequently,Mr.Pageaccumulated13yearsofexperienceinracecardevelopment,whilealsoteachingasanAdjunctProfessorintheAerospaceEngineeringdepartmentattheUniversityofSouthernCalifornia.Mr.PageispresentlytheChiefScientistatSwift.AtSwift,hehasconducteddesignworkfortheEclipseConceptJetandtheKillerBeeUAV.Abstract:It'softensaid"ifitlooksgood,itwillflygood".Mostwouldagreethatthisisanoverstatement.Yetmostpeoplealsobelievethisismainlytrue.Inthislecturewe'lllookataparadeofbeautifulanduglyairplanes,voteonourfavorites,andcomparethemtoaninternationalsurveyconductedlastyear.Nextwe'lllookatreasonsforalinkbetweenbeautyandperformance.Andfinallywe'llappealtoprinciplesoffacialbeauty.Asanaddendumwe'lllookattheEclipseConceptJetstory.In2007,Swiftwassecretlycontractedtodesign,buildandflyasmallbizjetin200days.Therelevanceofbeautywillbeexploredinthisreal‐lifeexample.
