Build BackgroundHelp students use their knowledge about zoos and animals to visualize the selection. Build interest by asking questions such as the following: ¿Fueron alguna vez a un zoológico? ¿Les gustó? Read the title and author and talk about the cover photograph. Tell the students that this selection is narrative nonfi ction, so the events are true. Ask students to describe what kinds of information they can expect to fi nd in such a selection.

Introduce the TextGuide students through the text, noting important ideas and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary so they can read the text successfully. Here are some suggestions:

at which this selection can be read. Mention that the chapter headings, the interesting subject matter, and the author’s enthusiastic tone make it easy to move through this selection quickly.

• Comprehension Based on your observations of the students’ reading and discussion, revisit parts of the text to clarify or extend comprehension. Remind students to go back to the text to support their ideas.

10 En el Zoológico de San Diego viven alegremente varios

osos polares. Aunque no se alimentan de focas como en el

Ártico, igualmente están felices con una dieta especial de carne

picada, pescado y lechuga.

Los osos nadan hasta el vidrio en un enorme tanque lleno

de agua salada fría. El área incluye un espacio abierto en el que

los osos pueden jugar, un arenero y un poco de nieve... ¡todas

las comodidades de su hogar!

En la estación de investigación de pandas gigantes,

los osos panda se hacen un festín con caña de bambú

cultivada en el zoológico, zanahorias, ñames y bizcochos

especiales.
