    Celebrating God’s Gifts, March 9-11

Third Sunday of Lent March 8, 2015

Join us and Augustinian Father Jim Friedel for a Lenten Parish Mission, March 9-11. Each evening will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the church. The nursery will be available for childcare each night. March 9 - “The Gift of God’s Love For Us” The opening night of the retreat seeks to consider the reason Jesus came among us, namely, to tell us of God’s Love for us. For various reasons, many people find it difficult to believe in God’s love for them. March 10 - “The Gift of God’s Forgiveness” Having tasted a little of what God’s love for us is, the second evening provides an opportunity to experience God’s compassion-ate forgiveness. The IHM Women’s Club will be sponsoring a Lenten meal prior to the start of the mission at 6:00 p.m. in the Historic Church. March 11 - “The Gift of the Eucharist” It is around the table of the Lord that we are nourished, challenged, and comforted by the Word, by the Body and Blood of the Lord, and by the presence of one another. Our Parish Mission will conclude in gathering together to celebrate the Eucharist. Father Friedel will be offering “mini missions” each morning after the 8:30 a.m. Mass. He will also be preaching at all English Masses this weekend, so please welcome him to our community!

    2015 HUNGER WALK/RUN Sunday, March 15

Hunger Walk/Run is one of the most

hope for the 1 in 5 people who face

hunger in our community, and a

the IHM St. Vincent de Paul

    conference. Please join us in

supporting this important mission! The event starts at 2:00 at

Turner Field. You will get a Hunger Walk t-shirt from Saint

Vincent de Paul. Visit http://tiny.cc/ihmhungerwalk to join

    IHM’s “Hunger Fighters.”

LENT 2015 Q&A WITH REP. SCOTT HOLCOMB Monday, March 16

    The Social Justice Committee Invites

you to a Talk and Q&A with State

    Rep. Scott Holcomb

Rep. Holcomb (a Catholic and a

member of IHM) will speak about

    legislative and policy issues being

    addressed in the Georgia General

Assembly this term. He will also

talk about ways that we can live out

the call of Catholic Social Teaching

    to "responsible citizenship" - being

involved and communicating with our elected officials about

issues that the gospel calls us to address. There will be time for

a question and answer session, in which we can explore how

Georgia legislative priorities line up with the principles of

    Catholic Social Teaching (http://www.usccb.org/beliefs-and-

    teachings/what-we-believe/catholic-social-teaching/seven-

    themes-of-catholic-social-teaching.cfm). The talk begins at

6:30 p.m. and we will wrap up by 7:45 so that any attendees

who wish to can then receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation

(as the Lenten penance service begins at 7:00 p.m. that

evening). We hope to see you! Questions, contact Sarah

    Mancini at [email protected].

Those who have already paid, please reconfirm your

reservation with the church office at 404-636-1418. Those who

Recently two of our staff members and several of our parents took part in a mission trip to Jamaica. For the 10th straight year IHM sent a contingency to serve with the adults and children of Mustard Seed Ministries. Mustard Seed helps so many in need, with the focus being on “abandoned, handicapped children,” who are “the most defenseless of our society.” This year staff members Katrina Vader and Dalia Quintanilla represented IHM school in Jamaica. Both were first-time participants, and both came home with wonderful tales of service and gratitude. Dalia recounted the experience for us: “The mission trip was an amazing experience. I went because I wanted to give my time to help others, but instead I ended up getting more out of the experience than I ever imagined. I came back with a renewed sense of purpose.”

Dalia and Katrina took time out to

    pose for the camera. Below,

FOLLOWING OUR ELECT TOWARD EASTER RCIA COORDINATOR DREW DENTON

Did you decide to “give up” something this Lent?

Are you praying more than usual? Are you giving

an extra portion of your time or money to people

in need? If you answered “yes” to any of these

questions, then you are, in a sense, participating

in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults.

At the Rite of Election on February 22, Archbish-

op Gregory recognized as “Elect” the 39 adults

and schoolchildren who are preparing to receive

the Sacraments of Initiation here at IHM this

Easter. Their forty-day journey toward the waters

of Baptism will be marked by prayer, reflection,

sacrifice, and service. The rest of us are called to

join the Elect on their journey—to make similar

preparations for Easter, when we will renew our

    own baptismal promises.

The soon-to-be-baptized among us continue to rely on our prayers and example.

But the season of Lent also turns the tables and asks the rest of us to follow their

example. They have chosen to embrace the cross of Christ; they have staked

their hope to his resurrection. We made the same commitment in our Baptism.

Are we prepared to live it out?

    FORMACION EN LA FE

    ACTIVITY OF THE WEEK

    ACTIVIDAD DE LA SEMANA

Elija una de las siguientes actividades

    para seguir reflexionando sobre las

    lecturas del domingo:

En familia, conversen acerca del enojo.

¿En qué momentos es útil o se justifica

    enojarse? ¿Cuándo es destructivo el

enojo? Pida a cada miembro de la

familia que hable acerca de cómo

    puede expresar sus sentimientos de

    enojo en forma positiva.

Participe con su familia en la reunión

    de reconciliación de su parroquia

durante la Cuaresma. Recuerde a sus

hijos que Dios siempre nos ama y

    siempre está dispuesto a perdonarnos.

Conversen acerca de las maneras en

que su familia puede mostrar respeto

por la casa de Dios. Comente las

    siguientes preguntas: ¿Qué debo hacer

    en la casa de Dios?

Enseñe a los miembros de la familia

acerca de las distintas maneras en que

honramos a Dios en la Iglesia.

Conversen acerca de las maneras en

que honramos a Dios en el hogar.

Choose one of the following activities as

a way to further reflect on the Sunday

    readings:

Have a family discussion about anger.

When is anger useful or justified?

When is anger destructive? Have each

family member talk about how he or

she can communicate his or her angry

    feelings in a positive way.

    Participate in the parish reconciliation

service during Lent with your family.

Remind children that God always loves

us and is always willing to forgive us.

Talk about ways your family can show

respect for God’s house. Discuss the

following questions: What should I do

    in God’s house?

Help family members learn about ways

we honor God in church. Talk about

ways we honor God at home.

THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT Exodus 20:1–17; 1 Corinthians 1:22–25; John 2:13–25 “You shall not have other gods beside me. You shall not carve idols for

yourselves  … you shall not bow down before them and worship them.”

Reading this line we might think of the idols that the Israelites made from

gold and then worshipped, excusing ourselves of such practices. And so

when we examine our conscience, we might just skip the First

Commandment. Perhaps, though, as we keep this season of Lent, we

might want to dwell on this commandment, thinking over what is the most

important thing in our life. Where do you put your time, thought, and

money? It is easy to mold idols by what family, friends, and coworkers

expect of us. It is much harder to keep our eyes on the vision that God

    desires.

The portrayal of the Temple as Passover nears in today’s Gospel shows us

a marketplace, not a place where the community gathers to praise God.

We can see here that the economy is an idol among the money changers

and the marketers in the Temple. Jesus drives them out in an effort to

cleanse the Temple. Perhaps you would like to take time to examine what

rules your life and ask Jesus to cleanse you. Our dependence should be on

God, for it is in him that we find wisdom and strength. As the Second

Reading states, “the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and

the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.” © Liturgy Training Publications. 1-800-933-1800. Written by Michael R. Prendergast. Scripture quotations are from

The New Revised Standard Version Bible: Catholic Edition, copyright © 1993 and 1989 by the Division of Christian

Education of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the U.S.A. Permission to publish granted by the Archdiocese of Chicago, on September 16, 2014.

    examinamos nuestra conciencia sobre el primer mandamiento, nada salta;

March 8: Did you know you can donate Real Estate to The Catholic Foundation of North Georgia to benefit

    the parish.

The Foundation follows a due diligence process to determine if the property can be accepted. Some people have

left their home to the parish in their will and some have donated their home or property during their life. You will

get a nice tax deduction when you donate real estate. When the Foundation sells the property, it invests the

proceeds into the parish endowment fund. If you would like more details on this type of charitable gift, please

contact Diane Duquette, Director of Gift Planning at the Catholic Foundation of North Georgia: 404-497-9440 or

email [email protected]. Visit the planned giving page on the Foundation website: www.cfnga.org for

additional methods of making donations to the parish from your assets.

    SECOND COLLECTIONS

Next week’s Second Collection will benefit Catholic Relief

    Services.

This collection supports six Catholic agencies that touch

more than 100 million lives around the world. The funds

from this collection help provide food to the hungry, support

to displaced refugees, and Christ’s love and respect to all

people. Please give generously to the Catholic Relief

Services Collection and help Jesus in disguise. Visit

    http://www.crs.org for more information.

GIVE TIME, PRAYER, ATTENTION Generosity in time and attention to God and others will transform us; begin and end

each day in conversation with God; pray for those who have asked for your prayers, and

for those whose needs are known only to God; give your attention to someone who is

alone; find a need that your time and talent can fill, and fill it!
