When a person first joinsthe Great Plains Region

Porsche Club, all they know isthey love their car, they lovePorsches, and maybe they wantto meet other folks likethemselves. The car is thecommon bond and like anyother “club” you get out of itwhat you put into it. Those thatbecome active in the clubquickly learn that therelationships formed with othermembers are what becomes thebest part of being involved inthe club and the car becomes aclose secondary thread bondingthe friendships. Many of themost enthusiastic members ofthe GPR have made lifelongfriends through the club, including myself.

I’d sincerely like to thankall of the Board members thathave served over the past threeyears. I have been veryfortunate to have some hard-working, creative, and talentedpeople to work with. Alwaysbe sure to thank the Boardmembers when you see thembecause they deserve the credit

Lastly, I’d like to express abig “Thanks” to all of the clubmembers for making this amemorable chapter in GPRhistory. You’ve made thisorganization one of the finest inthe country, and I’m lookingforward to some morewonderful times!

Well, at least I got a year off. After being newsletter

editor for 5 years, and writing 60monthly columns in Der Skooner,I was able to take a writing breakin 2010. However, now that Ihave been nominated as the 2011President, it appears that I amback on column duty.

Taking over for JonTheobald will be no easy task -he has done a marvelous job asPresident these last few years. We have had a number ofmemorable events, a lot of tracktime, the return of the Club Race, and a return to a healthyfinancial situation for the Club, all of which Jon had a large handin. In fact, looking back over thelast two years, I cannotremember a social or track eventthat Jon was not personallyinvolved with, whether it wasplanning, drumming upattendance, etc. At my very best,I can only hope to match hisachievements.

As Jon retires from hispost, we also have a few otherpeople leaving the Board. JohnKrecek has served as PastPresident the last two years, andhis counsel for the Board hasbeen much appreciated. He willremain as Chief DrivingInstructor and will continuehelping with the Club Race, sowe will luckily not lose himcompletely. Jim Avilla will beretiring from the Treasurer post, and he will be missed.Unfortunately, if you have notattended a Board meeting, youhave not seen the professional

InsideTrack

By Steve Wilwerdingreports that Jim prepares, whichinclude monetary breakdowns ofevery event that we have. Thanksto Jim, we know, to the penny, whether an event made or lostmoney, and what the currentstate of the Club’s finances are.Jim’s reports and counsel havebeen invaluable to the Board.

As we have people leaving,so we luckily have two peoplejoining the Board. SteveGallagher will assume JimAvilla’s place as Treasurer, and Iknow he will do great in thatposition and continue to ensurethat it has a strong place on theBoard. Ardey Clark will betaking my place as Social Chair, and there is no doubt in my mindthat he will elevate the positionfar above my role. Ardey hasalready put on a number ofmemorable events, and I lookforward to his ideas and eventsin 2011.

Luckily for me (and forthe Club), a number ofexperienced Board members willbe staying for 2011. Tom Cooperwill continue as bothMembership Chair andRegistrar, so I can sleep easilyknowing that those positions arefilled by a man eminentlyqualified for the posts. JRSanders will remain on as SafetyChair, Steve Eckhart willcontinue doing a great job withDer Skooner, Eric Elliott willretain his position as webmaster, and Abe Schlott will remain asSecretary. Jon Theobald willbecome Past President, and hiscontinued advice and counsel

will be much appreciated. A bigthanks to these Board memberswho have agreed to continuevolunteering in their positions in2011 - they make my job asPresident enormously easier.

As we end 2010 and begin toplan for 2011, I ask the membersreading this column for threefavors. The first is that youconsider donating a little of yourtime for our events. Perhaps, atthe next DE, you could come anhour early and help Tom withregistration, or offer to helpcheck people in at the HolidayParty, or help Ardey out and hostan event. Even if you just have anhour, your help would be greatlyappreciated. Second, I ask thatyou give a big “thank you” toBoard members that you see atevents - a lot of work goes intohaving the many events that wehost every year, and it is duealmost entirely to the Board’swork behind the scenes. Third, Iask for your suggestions andfeedback - being on the Board isan insulating experience, so ifyou have ideas for new events orhow we can improve existingones, feel free to call or email meat any time.

Make sure to mark yourcalendars for the Holiday Partyon January 22 - it is an annualevent that you don’t want tomiss. Have a happy holidayseason, and I look forward tohaving a great 2011 with theGreat Plains Region!

Earlier this year, SandySteckman and his brother

took a trip to Germany. OnOctober 15, Sandy regaled 57GPR members with an excellentslide show of his adventures atPasta Amore in Omaha.

Following a fabulous mealof filet mignon, seafood trio, orchicken parmigiana, weenjoyed wonderful dessertsincluding cannolis. Then,Sandy worked out a fewtechnical details and began theslide show.

The Steckmans enjoyedtime on the famousNurburgring. “I was passing noone, and being passed by

everyone,” quipped Sandy.Following their adventures

in driving the Nurburgringthemselves, they had theopportunity to watch a race onthe track. Sandy was pleased tosee Porsches perform very well

without the handicaps imposed by theAmerican Lemans and Grand Am series inthe United States.

Later, they had an opportunity to visitthe new Porsche and Mercedes museums inStuttgart. Sandy’s impression of themuseum was that the Porsche museumwas much more approachable, allowingyou to get very close to the cars.

Finally, Sandy talked about hisexperiences driving on the autobahn. He alsoshared his favorable impressions of theGerman people, food, and culture.

All in all, we had a great time sharingfabulous food and Sandy’s adventures.

More than 50 club members turned out to hear Sandy Steckman’s presentation.

watch a brief video of theprocess which was veryworthwhile.

Then we toured the HausBarn which was built in 1660 inOffenseth Schleswig-Holstein,Germany donated to the townof Manning, disassembled andmoved. In 1996, skilled Germancraftsman came over to helpassemble the building and inAugust, 2000 it was dedicated. The Haus Barn was a buildingwhere people and livestocklived together. To me, it wasvery interesting to see how itwas built. The thatched roofwas built from reeds shippedover from the Baltic Sea.

The third building was afarmstead of Frederick Hasslerwhich was built in 1915. Mr.Hassler had a hog operationand was known throughout thecountry for his Poland ChinaHogs. In 1920 his prize-winningboar sold for $20,000. He alsowas a car nut and owned aSpanish race car and two StutzBearcats. In 1915 he had one ofthe only rural houses in thearea with electricity andrunning water including abathroom upstairs. I couldwrite volumes on eachbuilding. I recommend if you
