Aluminium conquering the mass market
The announcement was made in the middle of January in the USA and certainly made waves: at this year‘s Detroit Motor Show the US automobile manufacturer Ford announced that it would be incorporating more aluminium in its vehicles in the future - not in the premium segment but in its top-selling mass production models.
The start is being made with the F-150 pickup truck, the top-selling vehicle on the US market over the last three decades. The body and fl at bed are now to be made entirely from aluminium. The 300 kg reduction in weight allows a smaller, more economical engine to be fi tted. If the vehicle sells well, this could signal the start of a general move away from steel towards aluminium as the most important material used in vehicle manufacture. This is because Ford has announced that it intends to use aluminium alloy in all its models. In 2014 alone, the car maker is planning to launch 23 new models.
The announcement in Detroit represents a paradigm shift - both for the automotive industry and also for the aluminium industry which can now hope to experience a boost from
new markets and new technical challenges. And so 2014 is already shaping up to be a good year for aluminium - not least because of the recovery being seen in the international sales markets. One of the highlights of the year is set to be the industry get-together at the World ALUMINIUM Trade Fair in Düsseldorf in October.
Eight months before the event opens its doors it is already taking on a clearer form - including new ideas and improved hall planning. Following the successful move to Düssel-dorf two years ago, all the signs are currently for further growth at the 10th edition of the industry get-together. We are delighted to be able to continue writing the ALUMINIUM success story with you.

Halls 11 and 12 are devoted to semi-fi nished products and related technologies. Here you will fi nd companies which specialise in extrusion, forging, hot and cold rolling and drawing. For years now the semi-fi nished products area has been a major attraction at the fair. A large number of extruders and rolling mills from Europe and overseas have already reserved their stands in hall 11 and 12 and the halls are already almost fully booked. You can access hall 11 and 12, at the heart of the fair, via the North and East entrances (Haupteingang Nord and Haupteingang Ost).
The exhibitors will be showcasing innovative products and the latest semi-fi nished product technologies and services. ALUMINIUM provides suppliers with a platform for presen-ting their full product portfolio. Because the 25,000 trade visitors expected at ALUMINIUM 2014 come from all the key application industries such as automotive, transport, building and construction, and engineering.

Interview with ceo of GDA, christian Wellner
At ALUMINIUM 2014 the Düsseldorf based German Aluminium Industry Association (GDA) and Reed Exhibitions will once again be joining forces to stage the specialist congress parallel to the trade fair. Aluminium industry experts will be providing an overview of the prospects for aluminium as a material in a wide range of application markets from 7 to 9 October 2014. In an interview, GDA Managing Direct Christian Wellner spoke about the idea behind the congress.
Mr Wellner, in the last few years the GDA has organised numerous well-attended seminars and specialist conferen-ces on the subject of aluminium. Most recently, your orga-nisation held the European Aluminium Congress at the end of November dedicated to „Aluminium Automotive Applica-tions – Tomorrow’s Design and Sustainable Performance“. What do you think is the reason behind the success of these congresses?Our congresses are intended as technical dialogue forums. As a special interest group in one of the largest aluminium markets in the world, the GDA has a large network of industry experts and specialists to draw upon. We make use of their expertise and knowledge in the congresses. The congress visitors value the mixture of up-to-the-minute knowledge and subsequent discussion they provide. Plus, our congresses - just like the ALUMINIUM trade fair - represent an excellent platform for industry players to consult with their peers.
What are the main topics at the congresses?Knowledge about the production, processing and use of alu-minium has developed considerably over the last few years. And that‘s why our congresses need to refl ect the full range and variety of topics of interest to the aluminium industry, its equipment providers, technology partners and clients.
This year the GDA is organising the congress in parallel to ALUMINIUM for the third time. What topics can the partici-pants expect?
The congress being held during ALUMINIUM 2014 will feature a number of 15 to 20 minute talks aimed at alumi-nium users. The intention is for the total of 30 talks being given at the congress to show the technical potential which aluminium holds in the different user markets such as „Automotive“ or „Surface“. The „Aluminium Markets“ session will also spotlight the economic factors. Procedures for the collection, sorting and recycling of aluminium will be discussed in the „Recycling Technologies“ session.The speakers are renowned practical experts from the in-ternational aluminium production, processing and application industries. Each individual session will consist of six talks and will last half a day. This allows the congress partici-pants to spend the other half of the day at the trade fair.
This will be the tenth ALUMINIUM, meaning that this is an anniversary year for an event which has developed into the most important event in the industry‘s calendar. This is due in no small part to the good partnership between the GDA and Reed Exhibitions.Defi nitely. The German Aluminium Industry Association was the co-initiator of ALUMINIUM and has been its institutional patron ever since. We have always believed in the event and have always offered it our full support. Which is why we are so proud that our idea has become such a success and ALUMINIUM has now grown into the leading trade fair for the aluminium industry worldwide.

Just a few weeks before the kick-off of the World Cup in São Paulo in summer of 2014, the international aluminium industry will gather there for ALUMINIUM BRAZIL 2014 from 1 to 3 April. Like the debut event two years ago, the second edition of the trade fair will take place once again as part of ExpoAlumínio, the most important industry meeting of the aluminium sector in South America.
A total of 170 exhibitors are expected for ExpoAlumínio, from CBA, the largest aluminium producer in Brazil, to key global players such as Aloca, Hydro, Novelis, Pyrotech and Wagstaff. Most of the international exhibitors will be consolidated under the umbrella of ALUMINIUM BRAZIL, which accompanies ExpoAlumínio: Some 50 exhibitors from Europe, the Middle East and Asia will be represented there. The largest exhibitor nation this year – behind Brazil – will be China.

India has the credit of being the fifth largest producer of aluminium in the world. The country has a capacity to produce more than 2.7 million tonnes of aluminium per year, accounting making up about 5 % of the total aluminium production on the globe.
In addition to the normal consumption in electrical, trans-port and other industrial sectors, higher consumption levels in packaging, building, automotive and consumer durable sectors will drive the sector. Taking into account the above factors, it is expected that the domestic consumption is likely to exceed 3 – 3.5 Million tonnes by 2017.
