Ever wondered what those blue barrels

were for at the Otis Transfer Station next

to the cardboard compactor? They are

    the designated DepositReturnable

Soda/Beer Can & Bottle drop off point.

Just taking a few extra seconds to drop

them into the blue barrels, instead of into

the trash compactor or recycling bin, helps fund the Otis

Community. Volunteers from the AMVETS, FRRSD PTO,and the Otis Cultural Council dedicate their time to sort and

process these returnables. Each of these organizations are

non-profit and all proceeds go directly back into the

    community. Every nickel counts!

AMVETS 2013 LOBSTER ROLL: 20 Apr 13 from

6:00pm 9:00pm at the Knox Trail Inn. Come on down for

some fun and chances to win succulent lobster, cash, and

other prizes. Raffle Tickets also on sale now! Contact Tom

    Soules at 269-6014.

MILITARY FACTOID: The Boeing B-52 Stratofortress is

    a long-range strategic bomber

    designed to deliver both

    conventional and nuclear

    munitions. The B-52 took its

maiden flight in April 1952. The

    B-52 just marked its 61th

    anniversary and will continue to

serve into the 2040s. . . that will

"Miley's Cat Chat"by Linda Bardsley, East Otis, MA

"Well, here it is April already. I am so ready for spring. Even though I havebeen cooped up all winter, I have managed to have some fun and get into alittle trouble. My cat friends (Big Head, White Boy, and Tiger) have been coming around quite a

bit. Mom put that bowl outside the bedroom window and I can sit up on top of a chest and watcheverything....then I head to the basement where I can even talk to my friends through the window.

Most of the time they just keep munching, but every now and then they will "check me out". I think Big Head likesme the best...Mom stopped filling the bowl at night though; because twice now there has been a HUGH possum outthere. He does not run away when we make noise or bang on the window either. This is not what we had in mindwhen we wanted to bring some amusement into my ho-hum winter life. The folks also put a feeder out for the birds(think I told you that last month) and they have been coming around regularly...life is good. Pops has been preparing

me for the car rides to Otis (coming soon, I hope) He hasbeen carrying me out and walking around the yard. Thecoolest thing is when he takes me with him, in the morning,to start his car. At first it was a little scary, but I totally trustthe dude...he always makes sure that I can still see theback door. I am kinda paranoid if he goes too far away

from it. (I know I sound a lot braver than I truly am) TheEaster Bunny came to visit us at the end of March....or so Iwas told..never saw the critter. As long as he stayed out ofmy food dishes, I am fine with it. Well, think I will go knocksome things off the dresser and get Mom going....thatalways seems to get her attention! So, til next month...behappy, stay safe and always spoil your pets. They deserveit. Meow"

Transfer Station Recycling Trailer: TheAmVets, the PTO, and the Cultural Councilpresented a proposal for handling the sorting,

finances, and distribution of the recycling duties.Brian moved to accept their proposal, Donseconded, and the proposal was unanimously

    accepted.Cemetery Sexton: Lenny represented the

Cemetery Commission and stated he felt theSexton should be responsible for selling the plots, laying out the plots for burial, and place thecornerstones, as well as track who is buriedwhere and who has purchased what. Lenny alsofelt that Maintenance should just be responsiblefor the upkeep and the Sexton should handleeverything else. Lenny also suggested theSexton be paid hourly as there are only five or sixburials a year in town on average. The Select

Board was thinking maybe a flat stipend and thencollect a fee for each burial. Currently, theamount charged to open a grave goes to thetown. The board asked Chris to check withsurrounding towns to see how they pay theirsextons so we have something to base this on.

Norma Agnes Perry Funk93, long time Winsted resident, passed away at the

Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington, CT on March3, 2013 with a room overflowing with family telling her howmuch they loved her.

Born on July 6, 1919 in Worcester, MA, to Melvina E.(Houghton) and Napoleon J. Perry, she attended MA

schools, graduating top of her class, going on to place firstwithin state competition for her secretarial skills, and laterbecoming one of the first women in the state to teach at abusiness college. Norma loved dancing and special outingswith her many siblings, and was a loving daughter whocherished and cared for her mother throughout her years.

On January 1, 1942, she became the wife of James P.Funk, at which time she moved to Winsted, CT. When herhusband left to serve overseas in the Navy Seabees during WWII, Norma held a full timejob to sustain their home, and also volunteered on the 'Rationing Board' to support thehome front war effort. From the goodness of her heart, she personally hand delivered'Western Union Telegrams' to families receiving news of a loved one who was Missing,Wounded, or Killed in Action.

When Jim returned home, they worked together as the local 'Ice Man', delivering ice tohomes and businesses throughout the area. They also served together as the local DogWarden and assistant for many years. In the 1950s, they began the Winsted CenterlessCompany and continued to own, and operate it until Jim's retirement. Norma also workedas the manager for Sears & Roebuck Co. for many years, helping so many and makingmany friends.

Although they returned to New Boston and Otis, MA often for dances and specialtimes with family and friends, anyone that knew the Funks have cherish memories ofboating, swimming, barbecuing, water skiing, music, friendship, and fun from gettogethers over the years held at their Highland Lake home. They enjoyed clambakes withthe Elks, square dancing, time at the IORM (Red Men's Club), and VFW events andactivities.

They were a fun loving couple, but were also very community and civic minded,

serving their town and its people in many ways. They worked strenuously after the 1955flood with the Winsted Fire Department to restore their town, local businesses, anddamaged homes. Norma was a life member of the VFW Post 296 Ladies Auxiliary, fillingmany officer positions over the years. She was a member of the Connecticut Blue StarMothers, serving troops, military, and veterans and also the BSMoA Big Dipper Auxiliary, which provides educational scholarships to military and veteran families. An amazingperson who brought joy to everybody, Norma was a much respected member of theWinsted United Methodist Church from the time she first moved to Winsted.

Norma has loved and missed dearly since 1993, her husband of 51 years, Jim. Shewas also predeceased in death by her parents, five sisters, three brothers, and a great-grandson.

Norma is survived by her daughter, Rev. Lin McGee and her daughter's husband Rev.David McGee of Winsted. She is also survived by three sisters, eleven grandchildren andfive step-grandchildren, thirty-eight great-grandchildren, ten great-great grandchildren,

many nieces and nephews, a multitude of special friends, and her beloved dogs, Melonyand Alexis. Norma was looking forward to the birth of another great-grandchild and twomore great-great-grandchildren. She very much loved her former caretaker and'daughter', Krystyna Kijewska.
