Sister Sledge formed in Philadelphia, and are in fact four sisters. They began performing whilst still children in their neighborhood, and in church.
They made their recording debut in 1971 and were signed to Atlantic in 1973. They had a couple of unsuccessful albums before being joined with Chic's Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards who wrote and produced the album "We Are Family" in 1979 when their run of chart hits began with He's The Greatest Dancer (USA #9, UK #6, AUSTRALIA #13 - 19789), We Are Family (USA #3, UK #6, AUSTRALIA #22 - 1979, UK #33 - 1984), Lost In Music (UK #17 - 1979, #4 - 1984), Thinking Of You (UK #11 - 1984). They went without hits for a while before releasing Frankie (UK #1, AUSTRALIA #4 - 1985).
He's The Greatest Dancer and We Are Family were huge Dance hits. We Are Family became the theme song of the Pittsburgh Pirates, the 1979 baseball champions, and then the anthem of gays marching on Washington later that year.
