The fertile rolling Lelds around Way-land are perfect for growing pota-toes, but they are also fertile Leldsfor artistry.Wayland was Lrst known as Middle-

town. In 1807 Christopher Zimmermanpurchased the tract of land which wouldbecome the site of the town.In 1848 John Hess and Dr. Henry Hess

purchased the acreage on which CalvinClark plotted the streets of Middletown.Folklore has it that while the two brotherswere inspecting Clarks work, one was hum-ming the tune to a favorite hymn, which in-cluded the words way land and the twodecided to call their new town Wayland.In 1852 the BuKalo, Corning and New

York Rail Road connected the village to theErie Lackawanna line, and the small vil-lages growth began.Potatoes became the villages economic

sustenance and today there are still vastLelds surrounding the village. Each yearthat heritage is celebrated at the WaylandPotato Festival.Yet while potatoes may be the villages

main claim to fame, it would be a rare spudthat fetched a$100 bid onthe openm a r k e t .However thesame cannotbe said aboutthe basketsdecorated byone SallyPatchin whosettled nearWayland atthe turn ofthe century.

be expected, given the time frame, Sally wasprogressive. ANer receiving art education inParis, she taught art in the public schools inPhiladelphia and aNer marrying she nur-tured her love of art by painting scenes onbaskets for friends as a hobby. Je popular-ity of her painted baskets soon turned her

hobby into a cottage industry which em-ployed several young women in the area.Patchins painted baskets became so

popular that her small studio was visited byEleanor Roosevelt, Lowell Jomas, andGenesee Valley historian/writer Arch Mer-rill.Patchin died in 1958 and in 1993 a Lle

on her work was established in the NationalMuseum of Women in the Arts in Washing-ton, DC. Today the baskets and other itemspainted by Patchin have sold for hundredsof dollars on the antique collectables mar-ket.Sally would get a kick out of that, said

Wayland Historical Society President HelenSick, because she sold her baskets for as lit-tle as 25 cents.In a 1993 interview one of the women

Patchin employed, Emma VanScorta said,Sally wanted her baskets to be used andenjoyed. She wanted styles that could beutilized as Mower baskets, waste baskets,picnic baskets and sewing baskets.Patchin didnt just paint baskets, she

was a charter member of the PatchinvilleParent Teacher Association, served on theschool board for 40 years, organized theLrst branch of the New York State HomeBureau, served as the Lrst, vice-president ofthe Wayland Free Library, was active in theRed Cross and served on the board of Way-land Hospital. In 1902 William Gunlocke established

the furniture company which recently cel-ebrated its 110th anniversary.Gunlockes style of furniture became

popular because they could bend wood,said Mary Lou Kiesl, a member of the his-torical society.Although beset by hard times through-

out its history, today the robust companyemploys over 600. While in its past Gun-locke produced home furniture and dcor,

today it is one of the leading manufacturersof school furniture.From the woodworking business arose

WoodcroNery in the 1930s where woodensalad bowls were turned from burls andpieces of wood and painted with Moral de-signs by and under the direction of HonniePlail. Jey were Lrst sold in the EarlyAmerican Shop and later under the Wood-croNery brand.

Je most popular, according to Sick,were the bowls painted with Dogwoodblossoms.Je WoodcroNery Shop was one of the

largest manufacturer of wooden bowls inthe United States. John Plail Cooley estab-lished the business in 1935 in an abandonedfeed mill on Second Avenue in Wayland.Today the bowls Made by Americans forAmericans are also very collectable. But while wooden bowls and furniture andbaskets were popular items, brothers, Guyand Homer Bennett were interested inmore modern devices the automobile.In 1921 they established Bennett Bros. inWayland, which is today the oldest, contin-uous Buick dealership in the world.Guy Bennett Jr. said, I think they de-

cided on Buick because they just liked thestyle of the car. Jey had a green and yellowtouring car.He guessed that when the business re-

ceived its franchise in July1922, the Lrst Buick mod-els they would have soldwere the four or six cylin-der 1923 models.Today the third generationof Bennetts is keeping thebusiness alive in the origi-nal brick building locatedat 7 South LackawannaStreetAccording to Guy Ben-nett Jr. the building isbeing highlighted inBuicks new national ad-vertising campaign and isbeing photographed with

some of Buicks vintage cars as well as cur-rent models.Out of its roots as a potato producing

area comes another notable Wayland resi-dent. Bill T. Jones came to Wayland with hismigrant farm laborer parents as a boy ac-cording to Sick. He was enrolled in the mi-grant laborers class at Wayland school, butwhen his parents chose to stay in the area,he became a member of the regular class,graduating in 1970.

A dance choreographer, in 1982 hehelped establish the Bill T. Jones/ArnieZane Dance Company which obtainedworld-wide fame through performances inover 30 countries and 100 US cities.Jones was featured on the cover of Time

Magazine in 1994 as part of the Black Ren-aissance.One of the most thriving businesses in
