COORDINATORS
PETTINE PRIOR
In 2005, Mike Pettine was promoted from CoachingAssistant/Quality Control to Outside Linebackers Coachin Baltimore, the same season that current Jets HeadCoach Rex Ryan was named the Ravens DefensiveCoordinator. Together the two oversaw a defense thatranked in the top five in almost every defensive cat-egory from 2005 to 2008 when both left for the Jets.
Top Five Ranks in Baltimore (2005-08)
1st in First Downs Allowed (999)
2nd in Total Defense (277.8 yards per game)
2nd in Scoring Defense (17.6 point per game allowed)
2nd in Rushing Defense (84.0 yards per game)
2nd in Opponent Third Down Conversion Percentage(33.8%)
2nd in Interceptions and t-2nd in Touchdowns off In-terceptions4th in Turnovers Forced (123)
5th in Passing Defense (193.8 yards per game)
t-5th in Sacks (168)
PERFORMING UNDER PETTINE
Adalius Thomas (BLT 05-06)
Thomas enjoyed his two best seasons in his only twoseasons with Pettine when he notched 9.0 sacks in2005 and 11.0 sacks in 2006.
Calvin Pace (NYJ 09- )In Paces first season with Pettine as Defensive Coordi-nator, he posted a career-high with 8.0 sacks in just 12games played.
Terrell Suggs (BLT 05-08)
In four seasons under Pettine, Suggs posted his fourhighest tackle totals, collected four of his five careerinterceptions and posted three season of at least eightsacks, leading the team in sacks twice.
WONDERFUL WORLD OF WESTHOFF
No team in the league has had more kickoff return touchdowns since Mike Westhoffs tenure with the Jets began
in 2001. Since then, the Jets have scored 12 times on kickoff returns. Perhaps even more remarkable than thefact that the Jets lead the league with 12 scores, is that those scores have come from six different players. LeonWashington (4),Justin Miller (3), Chad Morton (2),Jerricho Cotchery (1), Brad Smith (1) andJonathan Carter(1) have all brought a kick back for a score under Westy.
SCHOOLED BY SCHOTTY
Drew Brees (SD 02-05)
Schottenheimer arrived in San Diego for Brees second
season and quickly became a large part of his develop-ment with 2002 marking his first season as a startingquarterback. In four seasons with Schotty, Brees aver-aged over 3,000 yards a season, completing 62.3% ofhis passes and compiling an 84.7 passer rating.
Chad Pennington (NYJ 06-07)
Schottenheimers first season with the Jets coincidedwith the return of Chad Pennington from a season-ending injury the year before. Under Schottys direc-tion, Pennington posted a then career-best 3,352 yardspassing, completing 64.5% of his passes for an 82.6passer rating. Pennington also took home ComebackPlayer of the Year honors as he keyed a Jet return tothe postseason.
Thomas Jones (NYJ 07-09)
Jones, was considered a journeyman for the earlier partof his career, after spending his first seven seasons inthe league with three different teams. In that time, heaveraged 769.1 yards and 4.9 touchdowns per sea-son. In 2007, he was acquired by the Jets in an off-season trade and instantly became an integral part ofCoach Schottenheimers offense. In three seasons un-der Schotty, Jones averaged 1,277.7 yards rushing and9.3 rushing touchdowns a season and set career-highsin rushing yards and rushing touchdowns last season.
Mark Sanchez (NYJ 09- )
Sanchez, the Jets 2009 first-round pick, was chosento direct Schottenheimers offense in his rookie sea-son and responded by setting franchise rookie recordsfor completions and passing yards. His rookie seasonwasnt without its low points, but under Schottys tute-lage, Sanchez helped lead the Jets to two postseasonvictories, the third rookie quarterback in the AFC to ac-complish that feat since 1970.
