southern Italy to its cheesy transformation in America’s industrial cities. While you travel around and enjoy some of the best pizza NYC has to offer, you’ll learn about ancient pizza toppings and dough stretching techniques, as well as the baking patterns of different types of pizza ovens. After this tour, you’ll have a deep understanding of pizza’s origin as well as its evolution into a worldwide phenomenon. You’ll never look at a slice the same way again! Of America’s 46 first ladies, nine were born in New York State. This illustrated lecture by educator and writer Elizabeth Kahn Kaplan will explore the lives and legacies of these women, each with a different, fascinating tale to tell. One saved Madame de Lafayette from the guillotine during the French Revolution, while another, the “Rose of Long Island,” married a President 30 years her senior. This entertaining and informative talk will introduce you to these nine intriguing ladies, and will explore the social, political, and economic differences among them.

Program code: SAABHD3Following the Civil War, the improved economy and the new Long Island Railroad allowed city residents to escape the heat and spend part of their summers on Long Island. As a less expensive alternative to hotels, boarding houses emerged, where families could stay for a weekend, a week, or the entire summer, often with activities and meals included. Brookhaven Town Historian Barbara M. Russell will provide a glimpse into Long Island’s boarding house life in the early 20th century.

Friday, March 4 • 7:00pmCelebrate Irish heritage and enjoy the haunting and vibrant sounds of Siol na h’Eireann (The Seed of Ireland) Pipe Band. Each year, under the direction of Pipe Major Vincent Robinson and band manager Keith Hassett, Siol na h’Eireann has led the New York State Ancient Order of Hibernians Board in the NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The program will be narrated by Mike McCormack, National Ancient Order of Hibernians Historian.

The 1916 Irish Easter Uprising & “The Informer”

On Easter Monday in 1916, Irish rebels seized the General Post Office and other key locations in Dublin and proclaimed an Irish Republic. Though the rebellion was put down by the British, the event galvanized the Irish people into a cohesive force that eventually defeated the mighty empire. Michael Edelson, former Professor of Art and Humanities at Stony Brook University, who has lectured and taught throughout Ireland, will present this talk with extensive illustrations, music, and clips from John Ford’s Oscar winning masterpiece The Informer (1935), set during the height of “the Troubles.”

LisaJoy and FriendsTaught by a NYS certified special education teacher with over 20 years of experience, these three-week enrichment programs are designed for children with developmental delays and/or special needs, including those along the autism spectrum. Partner with your child in a calm, relaxed environment that will provide an intimate setting for learning through sensory activities.
