Explain why Vesalius’ publication of Fabric of the Human Body in the sixteenth century had such a limited impact on medical treatment at the time.

The work of Vesalius included the drawing of anatomically correct images of muscles, nerves, organs and the skeleton of the human body, published in his work On the Fabric of the Human Body. His work was based on the dissection of HUMAN corpses.

In the sixteenth century these proved to be controversial conclusions, as it went against the theories proposed by Galen and Hippocrates. Theories that had dominated the medical world for the previous 1,500 years, this limited the impact of his Vesalius’ discoveries.

Therefore, it was the reluctance of doctors to accept his theories that limited the impact of Vesalius’ work due to the widespread adoption of Galen’s work. While the renaissance saw many old ideas challenged, there was little development in understanding of disease and causes itself.

In the long term he had a significant impact on the History of Medicine as he began to challenge the accepted theories of Galen. In addition, his work was used for medical training in the Renaissance period.
