Fifth Sunday of Lent

NEW BEGINNINGS As we approach Easter each year the gro-

cery stores and shopping malls fill with candy eggs and chicks, bunnies, and butterflies. While some people think these images distort the real reason for the season, others recognize in them signs of the abundant and transformed new life that awaits those who are baptized into the death and resur-rection of Jesus Christ. Baptism invites each of us into a new beginning. The images of water in to-day’s reading from Isaiah can help us reflect on this reality. Through the waters of baptism the Lord “opens a way . . . and a path” for us. The powers of evil in our lives are “quenched like a wick.” Then the Lord does “something new” in us. The water “springs forth” from within the wasteland of our hearts to create a river of new life (Isaiah 43:16, 17, 19). Little by little our dry deserts are trans-formed into lush gardens for the praise and honor of God.

“GO, AND . . . DO NOT SIN ANY MORE” This is the scenario that St. Paul describes

in today’s selection from Philippians. Reading his words we can almost envision a baby chick dis-carding its cracked shell and a new butterfly forfeit-ing its empty cocoon as “so much rubbish” com-pared to the “supreme good” of the new lives they have begun (Philippians 3:8). But Paul is quick to point out that baptism is just a beginning. There is a lifetime to be lived in pursuit of “perfect maturity,” our “upward calling, in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:12, 14) In the Gospel for today Jesus echoes this lesson. He rescues the woman from her oppres-sors, offering her a new life with the words “Neither do I condemn you.” Then he invites her to begin anew: “Go, and from now on do not sin any more” (John 8:11). As we approach Easter Jesus is inviting each of us to be fully transformed by the new life that was begun in us in the waters of bap-tism. Copyright © 2006, World Library Publications. Evenings of Confession Come and experience God’s mercy

and forgiveness

Wednesday, April 10 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Church

Next Saturday, April 13, we will need volunteers to clean, trim and move palms for Palm Sunday. If you are able to participate, please meet at 9:00 a.m. under the Youth Building Porch. We would suggest if you

have a pair of garden gloves that you bring them with you to avoid being stuck with the palm branch thorns. Any small trimming tool or pock-et or pairing knife would be useful also. Thanks in advance for your continued devotion to Our Lady of Divine Providence Parish.

Help the Altar Society decorate our church for Easter with flowers in memory of a loved one. A beautiful book will house the names of all those being remembered and will be

placed at the Altar during this Easter Season. On the weekends through April 14. A table will be set up in the Narthex along with envelopes. Please put the name or names of the people you want to remember on the envelope— put your donation in the envelope and place it the basket on the table or in the collection basket. There will also be enve-lopes on the back tables in the Church and you can put them in the collection baskets.

Are you traveling for Easter to visit relatives or friends or maybe a vaca-tion? Finding a Catholic Church and times of Mass is easy. Whether you are traveling nationally or worldwide, there

is a Catholic Church near you. Go to the website www.TheCatholicDirectory.com or download the iPhone app (it’s free).
