Redactioneel • De maatschappelijke voorbeeldfunctie die de voetbalwereld zich graag voorstaat, is vaak ver te zoe-ken. Duizelingwekkende salarissen, exorbitante transfer-sommen, matchfixing, bestuurlijke malversaties, racisme, supportersgeweld, kortom, alles wat in onze burgermaat-schappij als ongewenst wordt beschouwd. Iemand die al decennia meedraait in dit parallelle universum is Dick Advocaat. Hij staat bekend als geldwolf én aimabele man en wel in die volgorde. Vorige zomer belandde hij in Bel-grado, althans, hij werd er de trainer van het nationale elf-tal. De eerste twee potjes werden gelijk gespeeld, daarna werd er twee keer verloren. De EK-kwalificatiewedstrijd tegen Albanië werd na het drone-incident gestaakt en reglementair gewonnen, de punten werden door de UEFA in mindering gebracht. Of hij hierna nog vertrouwen had in zijn team, staf en zichzelf? Ništa, nada, nothing. Al snel kwam Advocaat niet meer opdagen, een niet ongebruike-lijke zet van zijn kant. Maar deze keer was er iets anders, hij liet zijn salaris achter. Heeft dit voetbal universum mis-schien toch echt een voorbeeldfunctie.

Mortal Cities Forgotten MonumentsFormer Yugoslavia, the country where the First World War began, has always been a breeding ground for conflict. Due to its geographical location between Western and Eastern Europe, many powers, both before and after the First World War, had an interest in conquering this region. This has resulted in a mix of different cultures and religions and all kinds of cultural heritage. After the Second World War ended, Yugoslavia was in ruins. Josip Broz, better known as Tito, became the notorious leader of the country. Tito introduced a strict socialist regime that constantly emphasised similarities and mutual dependency of the different ethnic groups of the former six republics, in order to counter nationalist sentiments that were naturally still present among the members of the various groups.
Architecture has played a large role during turning points in the history of former Yugoslavia, both during the Second World War, when Yugoslavia was formed, as well as during and after the last civil war of 1992-1995. Arna Mackic’s fascination for the monuments commemorating Second World War victims in Yugo-slavia grew from here, along with her interest in the becoming and the functioning of destroyed cities as a result of the last civil war. Above all Mackic’s interest centers around the aspect of time – around the way destroyed cities transform over time.
Mackic’s design research is about the search for a new meaning of architecture and the public domain in the destroyed city of Mostar in Bosnia-Herzego-vina. M ackic does this research through the eyes of an architect, which is the field in which she wants to develop. Her goal as an architect is to strategically determine where and how she can contribute through architectural interventions. The choice for architec-ture as a form of expression comes from Mackic’s personal background in which the confrontation with destroyed cities is an important part.
In october 2014, Mackic presented three architectural models and the book ‘Mortal Cities & Forgotten Monu-ments’ on the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven. The first two parts of the book outline the historical and archi-tectural context, which has been of great significance to the situation as it is nowadays in former Yugoslavia. In ‘History is his story, not my story’ she introduces her story, an urban and architectural intervention for the destructed and divided city of Mostar.
Arna Mackic is an Amsterdam based architect. Since 2009 she is part of the core design team of RAAAF.
