December 2018 - January 2019 What’s On & Where To Go 5

I've got a confession to make... I've become a bit of a birder. It all started harmlessly with a safari shirt and a field guide to the Birds of Australia, but once I got hold of a good set of binoculars and realised just how much was around, I was hooked. Quickly I learnt that this area, in which we are so lucky to live, is home to some of the most amazing birds in the world. The diversity is incredible, often taking no more than 20 minutes travel to be in yet another area, with its completely different suite of birds to complement the subtle changes in the area's soil, rainfall and geology. The birds tell us many things and many of the lessons are lifelong.

This year I was fortunate enough to tour the Tablelands as part of an International Birding group. Being a long-time resident of the area, it was great to go out to see the amazing places we have on offer through the eyes of these visitors—who had come specifically to look at the birds. Watching the joy and wonder on the visitor’s face is a precious reminder of how lucky we are to live in this remarkable area of the world.

After exploring the coast, we began our Tablelands trip with a visit to the Cassowary House Bed & Breakfast and were graced immediately with a cassowary and three chicks. It is truly awesome to be so close to this most prehistoric of birds. Watching the young chicks play was like being

transported back in time as the majestic creatures provoked images of dinosaurs roaming the earth. Whilst bird watching, there is always plenty more to see and luckily for us this time it happened to be a superb fruit dove, which is a real stunner, although you will probably hear it – whoop whoop whoop – before you can spot it.

What followed was a very slow meander through the Tablelands; there is no need to rush when you are birding. It is astounding how much is revealed when a group of birders stand in one area and have a good look and listen. With all senses engaged, completely immersed in our surrounding, nature begins to reveal herself. Looking not just at the birds, but maybe a nest, or a lizard on a rock, an orchid in bloom. Listening not just for the high-pitched twitter of a fairy wren or the cry of a black cockatoo, but also for the soft wind in the trees when for some reason there seems to be no birds at all.

Sunset was spent watching over a feeding platypus, which technically is not a bird I know, but it does have a beak so I decided to include it in my birding story. It did not take long to also notice the jacana hiding in the reeds, the sweet melody of the gerygone, or the swiftlets, so high and small that they could be easily overlooked. I realise that this birding has helped me to better see and appreciate the rich story of all life on

Earth and for this I am grateful.

Becoming a birder doesn’t take much, simply an interest in nature and a slow walk through a local trail. A pair of binoculars and a local bird book can help you engage more fully with what you see. The Tablelands is full of bird watching areas. Some of the most popular spots include: Curtain Fig State Forest, Crater Lakes National Park, Hasties Swamp, Bromfield Swamp, Danbulla State Forest Drive and Mt Hypipamee National Park. Or for a real treat visit one of our local resorts, see page 4 for ideas.

Clayton Grove is a tour guide and artist based in Kuranda often found in the Original Rainforest Market selling his Magick Sticks. See details in his advertisement on page 13 or visit www.magicksticks.xyz

Boomerang Bags is a grassroots, community-driven movement tackling plastic pollution at its source. Boomerang Bags Tablelands is one of over 860 community groups around the world. Volunteers from all walks of life get together to make re-useable ‘boomerang bags’ using recycled materials, as a means to provide a sustainable alternative to plastic bags.

Currently we have supplied nine local businesses with our reusable bags, with plans to expand to 3 more businesses by the end of the year. Bags can be borrowed if you forget your own, and returned next time you shop for someone else to use (hence the name Boomerang!). If your business would like some bags please contact us. The bags create a platform to start conversations, make friends, up-cycle materials and

work towards shifting society’s throw-away mentality to a more sustainable revolution of re-use; one community, needle and thread at a time!

We are looking at expanding our great work in 2019, including attending markets to distribute bags and put together take-home-and-sew kits for people who can’t make it to our sewing bees. In order to do this, we need lots of volunteers! No sewing skills are necessary, just willingness to learn! There are plenty of non-sewing jobs. Kids are welcome and can even be taught basic sewing skills. It is a very social morning and we ask volunteers if they can bring a plate to share for morning tea. Tea/coffee is provided. We are also always looking for donations of fabric to be made into Boomerang Bags.

We meet on the first Saturday of the month

at Love-Lee Cooking 70 Main St, Atherton

from 9am–1pm

Over the past few years, the Herberton New Year's Eve Street Party continues to grow in popularity

and is now one of the best places on the Tablelands to celebrate another lap around the sun. The event is family-focussed and relaxed, with the historical town providing the perfect venue for a street party. As it is the only event of its type in the area, people come from far and wide to be a part of the festivities.

Over the years, Herberton New Year's Eve Street Party has hosted some amazing performers including the Hillbilly Goats, Carinda Christie Trio, Clarkey and the All Stars, the old favourites OLD Kools, and JD the DJ.

This year, Herberton local and international star, Kenny Devine will be supplying the live pulse with everything from jazz, rock, rap, fusion and ballads. JD the DJ as always, will keep the party pumping late into the night. There are plenty of activities to keep the kids happy including face painting and a jumping castle —so bring the whole family out for a New Year’s Eve to remember.

Herberton's New Year's Eve Street Party is organized by the Herberton Community Inter Action Group (HCIA). In fact, this group came into existence because of the growing popularity of this event. The HCIA now supports many local not-for-profit events promoting fun, arts, music and culture in the Herberton district with the New Year’s Eve party being one of the major highlights of the year.

The HCIA is looking for a new enthusiastic coordinator for the New Year's Eve Street Party for 2019. The coordinator role is well-supported by a team of volunteers and is a rewarding position. If you are interested please contact the HCIA on 0437 742 529 to ensure this unique celebration continues.

Start the year off right with lots of fun, great food and excellent music to bring in the New Year.

See you at the Herberton New Year's Eve Street Party.
