Severalshipstodayareequippedwithmodernelectronicallycontrolledmarineengines,whicharecustomisedtooperateatbothnormalandslowspeedstoreducefuelconsumption.Thisisbecausethecostofbunkeroilaccountsformorethan60%ofthefreightcost,whichmeansthatoperatingvesselsasenergyefficientlyaspossibleisanobvioussolution.

Inspiteoftherapidadvancementoftechnologyinthemaritimeindustry,therearestillshipssailingininternationalwaters,havingconventionaloldmarineengineswithminimalautomation.Shipownersareundergreatpressuretooperatetheirshipsatslowsteamingtokeepthemselvesabovetheprofitmarginandalsotocomplywithstringentenvironmentalregulations.

Itisobservedthatslowsteamingofoldmarineenginesdeterioratestheenginepartsanditsefficiency,aslowspeedmarineenginesarenottraditionallysuitedforprolongedslowsteaming.Anumberofprecautionsneedtobeconsideredincaseslowsteamingoperationsaretobeadoptedwithoutmodificationoftheengine.(However,thosealonewouldntsolvetheproblemasthereareseveralothertechnicalissuesrelatedtoslowsteamingofships.)

Whenoperatinganoldmarinepropulsionengineforslowsteaming,followingprecautionsandmeasuresmustbetakenforsafeoperation:

1.Themaincomponents,whichareinvolvedinslowsteamingoperations,areenginefuelandfuelsystemequipment(Pumps,injectorsetc.).Itisnecessarytoensurethatthefuelisproperlytreatedandheatedtoachieverequiredviscosityfortheengine.

2.Thefuelinjectorsmustbeinproperconditionforgoodatomisation.Iftheengineneedstobeinprolongslowsteamingoperation,theinjectorneedlecanbemodifiedafterconsultingwiththeenginemakers.

3.Thefuelboosterpressuremustberegulatedthroughpressureregulatingvalveandnotbyadjustingthebypasssafetyvalveformaintainingfuelpressureandrecirculationoffuelinthesystematalltimes.

4.Thejacketandpistoncoolingwater(mostoftheoldengineshavewatercooledpiston)temperatures



mustbemaintainedhightoensurethatthecombustionofairinthecylinderdoesnotcooldown.

5.Inmainengineswithcentralcoolingsystem,theaircoolersfreshwatercoolinginletmustbethrottledsothatahigherairtemperatureismaintained.

6.Forsystemwithseawatercooler,theseawater(S.W)inlettemperaturemustbekeptathighersidetokeepthecombustionairandinturntheexhausttemperatureshigher.

7.OldMarineenginesareprovidedwithmechanicaldrivecylinderoilpumpblock.Theseblockpumpsaredrivenbyadrivingarmconnectedtothecamshaft.Thefulcrumofthedrivingneedstobeadjusted(reduced)whichwillinturnadjusttheamountofcylinderoildeliveryintheenginecylinder.

8.Withenginesfittedwithloaddependentcylinderoilfeedsystem,itisimportanttoadjustthefeedratemanuallyinadditiontotheautomaticadjustment,especiallyonvariablepitchpropellerinstallationastheenginewilloperateatthesameRPMevenwhenthepitchhasbeenreduced.

9.Duringslowsteaming,theengineersmustensurethattheexhaustgastemperaturesaftereachcylindershouldnotgobelow200DegC.Iftheexhaustgastemperatureisfallingbelowthislimit,theenginepowermustbeincreasedtillthetemperaturereaches275degC.Theengineshouldbecontinuedwiththispowerforatleasttwiceinaperiodof24hoursbeforereducingagaintoslowsteamingtoensuretheexhaustreceivertrunkisdriedout.

10.Anadditionalretrofitsteamheaterinthescavangeairsystemisofadditionaladvantageforslowsteamingoperationasitwillincreasetheexhaustgastemperatureandreducetheriskofturbochargerproblems.

Enablingoldmarineenginesforslowsteamingisnotaneasytaskasseveralfactorsneedtobetakenintoconsideration,takingintoaccountvariouslongtermeffectsontheshipsmachinerysystemsandotherfeasibilityfactors.

Higherefficiencyisachievedmainlyduetothevesselsspendingmoreoftheirtimesailingatoptimumspeed,whichisdefinedasbeingthemostefficientspeedforeachindividualvesselandvoyageduringthecurrentfuelandfreightmarketconditions.
