Recent developments have revealed that the reading culture
among Nigerians, particularly the youth and students, has
waned significantly. The rate of failure recorded by students in
the WAEC, NECO and other examinations are clear indications
to that. How then do we improve the reading culture?
JEOF in partnership with Western Union's Read to Succeed
School Library Programs is promoting a school –wide reading
culture for students of Ransome Kuti Memorial Senior
Grammar school in Mushin, Lagos.
Reading is a life-long activity which is done over a period of

time in order to acquire knowledge, skills and attitude. In
other words, reading is a fundamental building block of
learning. Reading enhances the general development of
man and his society.
No nation can develop without its people developing the
right reading culture, as reading helps to develop the
mind to be informed, thoughtful and constructive, with
better understanding of issues, events and situations.
That is why it is often said that if you teach a child to read,
you have made him/her a king/queen.
Unfortunately, the reading culture is declining every day
in Nigeria, especially among the younger generations,
having adverse and negative effects on the nation's
literacy rate which is currently at 59 percent. It must be
realized that no nation can develop without a sound
knowledge base of its people. For Nigeria to realize its
quest for sustainable development goals, emphasis must
be placed on developing a sound reading culture as well as
making education a priority.
