Ace Your 11 Most Nomination10 Tips for Nominating Your Site to America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places List for 2013

When considering a nomination submission, it is important to remember that sites don’t need to be famous -- but they must be significant within their own cultural context and illustrate important issues in preservation.

1. Pick a significant site.

We’re history geeks, so make sure to tell us what’s so meaningful about the site you’re nominating. We love hearing the unique stories surrounding each place.

2. Lay on the history.

In other words, show and tell. Adding photos of the nominated site in your application package gives us a better idea of what you are trying to save. Like your story, pictures help bring your site to life.

3. Include photos.

When evaluating a potential site for inclusion on the list, we consider a range of factors, including its architectural or historical significance. Tell us how the site has influenced the culture of the local community, region, or perhaps even the entire country.

4. Give us the full picture.

Another factor we consider when assessing prospective sites for the 11 Most list is the urgency of the threat. In addition to describing why the site is endangered, let us know if there are any potential solutions.

5. Explain the threat facing your site.

Is there a local organization already at work preserving the site? We want to know so we can reach out and combine efforts, increasing the chance of saving the site.

6. Tell us who’s on the case.

Are there any specific ways someone can get involved to help save this place? If so, share it with us. We’re always looking for ways to engage more people in preservation, especially when it involves their own local landmark.

7. Involve the community.

Nominations close on Friday, March 1. Decisions are made by late April, and the final list will be announced on June 19.
