The Really Awful Orchestra! You may have heard of the Edinburgh based Really Terrible Orchestra. They have proved that you can be in a band even if your skills are minimal. They rehearse, give concerts and have even been on tour to the States. Well, here in our villages you have the chance to do the same. Did you play an instrument at school? Have you got a forlorn French horn in the attic? Is your drum kit dying in the garage? Would you like to tinkle a triangle? Then come and join the Really Awful Orchestra and realise your potential as an orchestral player.Do not worry if you can’t read music. If you can count, that will do. Just come along and have a go. We maybe won’t be going to the States, but we will have fun and you won’t be bored. Michael Cartwright has offered his excellent services as Musical Director and is keen to start as soon as possible, so if you can scrape, blow or bang something, then come and join us. All enquiries to Mary on 577246 or [email protected]

Non-urgent calls to Police on 101New Police Contact telephone number. Instead of 0845 4564567 for non-urgent calls to the police now ring 101; you will then have to go through a number selecting menu and the calls will cost 15p/minute from landlines or mobile. Use this number to report a stolen car, property damage, suspected drug dealing, to inform police of crime in the area or to talk to a policeman. Only use 999 if the crime, etc is actually in the process of being committed.

Church Notice Boards Hopefully you will have seen the new notice boards that have appeared outside each of the five churches in the benefice. These beautifully-crafted oak boards have been made possible through a generous grant from the Norwich Diocese and by a small contribution from each of our churches’ PCCs. They are intended to display information concerning activities, services and forthcoming events that each church is involved in. They also act as a reminder to all that the churches exist, that they are alive, active and welcome everyone in these communities. Please do try to give support, no one wants to see any of our church buildings disappear through lack of support; they are there for us all: once lost they will never return.

AutumnWe are in the season of “mists and mellow fruitfulness” (from Keat’s poem To Autumn). There are so many good things to gather from hedgerows. An amazing website, if you have access to a computer. I googled “Nature Did you know”? The most amazing facts came up. Pages of it. I would recommend it. I was only trying to check my facts, but spent far too much time looking through it!Locally, I have probably spent too much time watching the sky for migrants. This is the time of year to have your bird book to hand. In North Norfolk, there has been a Pallid Harrier, and some Citrine Wagtails, but all I saw were some robins and wrens having a real scrap about territory! They may be small, but they can be very noisy! The wren comes in the house and shouts at my dog. He is not small (an Irish Wolfhound), but he flees in terror! The other thing that I have noticed locally is an unfortunate increase in the Magpie population. They are beautiful birds to look at, but prey on smaller birds and destroy their nests.By the way, if you get annoyed with snails and their trails, think carefully about what feeds on them. Both the Song thrush (in decline) and Mistle Thrush will need them for winter fodder. You may hear them tapping them on a hard surface, to break the shell. Their demise will be very quick, don’t worry. Enjoy autumn and its beautiful colours. J

Hempstead, albeit only just. The annotation ‘def ’ means that the boundary has been defaced (probably due to hedge removal) and the ‘4 ft R H’ is interesting. Initially, a ditch was dug which was the boundary and the spoil thrown up later becoming a hedge. In time the ditch was filled in but the boundary remained in its original location.

Arthur Pentney Diamond Jubilee Coronation Exhibition On the weekend of 26th/27th May 2012 we will be holding an exhibition of Coronation Memorabilia in Baconsthorpe Church. If you have anything from this event 60 years ago which you would be prepared to lend for exhibition we would be most grateful. Please contact the PCC Secretary, Corinne Youngs on 577263. Churches Cycle Ride Many congratulations to Tessa McCosh who raised £150 in sponsorship for the Churches Cycle Ride last month. We need more like her next year!

Baconsthorpe News CongratulationsMarian and George Grimwood are pleased to announce the safe arrival of a grandson, Herbert Simon Vigor. Third son for Emma and Simon and brother to Noah and Fergus. Baconsthorpe 200 Club This month’s winners are: £25 David Webb; £10 David Youngs; £5 Frances Clare and Ian Robinson. Parish Boundaries Do you remember Parish Boundaries? Rogation Sunday in May used to be a time to walk around your parish ‘Beating the Bounds’ and small boys would be upended and have their heads bumped at various locations to instil into them exactly where that boundary was. A boundary had more importance in those days when people rarely had the need to leave the confine of their village and, in Victorian times, children following one of the German marching bands would never venture beyond that boundary.Mistrust and animosity certainly existed between some villages, Edgefield and Corpusty being one example, and even today some elements from North and South Creak do not exactly ‘get on’. A boundary would originally have followed some physical feature (usually a stream, ditch, road or hedge) and boundary stones would be sited at various points. One small extract from the 1906 ordnance survey map shows part of the boundary (as a dotted line) between Hempstead and Baconsthorpe and confirms that the ‘Hare and Hounds’ certainly does fall within

Barningham News First 5k-ish Run – 1 Oct 2011

Photo: David Doak

Soaring temperatures of 27.6 C made for some hard running at the first Barningham 5k-ish Fun Run in the grounds of Barningham Hall. Luckily help was on hand in the form of 300 bottles of water kindly donated by Bakers and Larners and 150 goody bags filled with fresh fruit and fruit bars provided by Waitrose.

The one mile Junior Fun Run was won by Tom Greenacre (aged 9) from Norwich in just 5 mins 30 secs. Second and third places were taken by Eloise Harris, 13, from Briston in 6 mins 12 secs and Alfie Shippen, 10, from London in 6 mins 17 secs.

Clive Steward from Norwich was victorious in the 5k-ish Run in a time of 19 mins 43 secs. The first lady over the line was Louise Evans, from Holt, in 22 mins and 59 secs. More than £2500 has been raised so far, with sponsorship money still being collected, which will go towards outdoor sports and play equipment for Aldborough Primary School. This includes £1200 from NatWest Bank in Holt, donated as part of their annual charity giving.

Hempstead News

All About EveThis classic comedy (1950) was warmly appreciated by the Hempstead Film Club last Wednesday although 158 minutes long, the waspish whit and repartee never flagged.

Exceptional performances by Bette Davis as Margo an ageing Broadway star, George Sanders as the sardonic and acid tongued theatre critic Addison de Witt, and Anne Baxter as Eve the star struck groupie.I suppose the moral to the story is never give house room to a wannabe. MT Hempstead 200 Club This month’s winners are £25 G Grimwood; £10 M Harris; £5 D Spalton, G Matthews and P Wallis.

Harp Concert – 13 Oct 2011 Another packed house at the village hall enjoyed a delightful evening of music from the harp and hands of the consummate Lucinder Pennick. She invited us all upon a musical journey through the months of the year with a variety of pieces from classical to the blues, ably assisted by the wonderful Philip Meader playing the flute. Also, there was the debut performance from our own Su Summers on accompanying harp.We all, I’m sure, found the instrument spell-bonding – an evening we will remember for a long time to come. May she return to entertain and enchant us again soon! Thanks is due to the hard working organisers for providing the excellent facilities; especially the tea and ‘yum-yum’ cakes! TS

Churches Cycle RideThank you to everyone who donated, sponsored and helped this year. Money is still coming in but, so far, the total is £716. And special thanks to fellow cyclists Sophie Colley, Aaliyah Lawford, Philippa and Sebastian Payne and Ian Summers whose efforts made this splendid result possible.

YG

Church Stall – 15 OctWe had a stall at a charity event in Holt where we raised £56 for church funds. Seen on a sign near youWhat a surprise, we saw the owl sitting on the Hempstead sign and wished we had brought our camera to record the event. Anyway, we went home, returned and the owl was still there even though it had noticed our antics.

Matlaske News Churches Cycle Ride Thank you to all those who so generously sponsored me in the Norfolk churches cycle ride on September 10th. Altogether I visited 31 churches and covered 45 miles. The total amount raised was £150. David Wooff

Matlaske – Village Sign You may have noticed that Matlaske village sign has been ‘missing’ for a few weeks. It is

being refurbished by Steve Eggleton of Banham and will shortly be back in place restored to its original colour. Thanks are due to Donny March for cleaning and varnishing the supporting post.

Plumstead News Plumstead Harvest Festival The Greshams’ girls’ choir gave their usual polished performance to a full church. £155 was collected in aid of Farm Africa. After the service the choir and congregation were kindly entertained to tea by Mary Lintott, ably assisted by Eileen, Jill and Emma. The fruit and vegetables were passed on to the Canaan Society in Sheringham, who have gratefully acknowledged receipt. GrittingSuccess at last! Plumstead PC has persuaded NCC to include in their winter-gritting routes the whole stretch of road between Baconsthorpe and Matlaske, including the section which passes through Plumstead, where until now they switched the gritting machine off. So instead of slipping and sliding you can now get a sure grip as you drive (carefully please) through Plumstead. Enjoy the ride! Parish Clerk.

Letter to the Editor

Cookery CornerI just wanted to say thank you to our Lady at Cookery Corner. Until last month’s edition I had been hesitant and scared to try the art of preserving. Her recipe looked possible and I had such fun gathering, straining and bottling. The outcome being delicious. I am well and truly inspired and, in fact, pickling anything in sight! Thank you for the inspiration and recipes! PW

Heating OilAs the nights start to draw in during autumn Norfolk Constabulary is reminding farms, commercial premises and householders who have heating oil on their premises to remain vigilant. Rising fuel prices inevitably leads to a rise in the cost of heating oil, making it a more attractive proposition for thieves who target fuel tanks.Police are offering a site-specific crime prevention survey free of charge from trained officers and staff – phone 101 [email protected]

Alzheimer’s Society QuiltSu Summers has pledged to raise £100 for the Alzheimer's Society by selling 100 numbers in a draw for a beautiful quilt made by Ann Hill of Langham. Numbers are £1 – you choose which number to buy of those

available. The winning number was picked by a little girl visiting Felbrigg Hall last week, is in a sealed envelope and unknown to Su. This will be opened after the last number has been bought and the winner informed. She can take the quilt to events in the villages so please tell her if you can offer such an opportunity. If you would like a number please contact Su 710702.
