Dear UCLA Alumni and Friends:From majestic palaces and ancient ruins to stately monuments and palm-lined promenades, the cities and landscapes that edge the Black Sea reveal fascinating histories and astounding beauty. Depart Istanbul for Bulgaria’s centuries-old town of Nessebar, marked by magnificent fortress walls and numerous Byzantine churches. Cruise to Romania’s ancient metropolis, Constanta, brimming with Roman-era artifacts, then sail onward to Odessa, Ukraine’s Baroque architectural masterpiece and home of the famous Potemkin Steps. Take in opulent tsarist palaces and the romantic Swallow’s Nest castle in Yalta, and in Sevastopol, historical relics abound from Greek walls to beautiful monuments. Continue to Russia’s largest resort city, Sochi, site of the 2014 Winter Olympics, before cruising to Turkey, where Sinop’s historic fortifications and ancient artifacts await. Explore the resort town of Kusadasi, or visit one of the greatest ruined cities in the Western world, Ephesus, before arriving in Athens, where your epic voyage concludes.

UCLA Professor Arch Getty’s specialty is Russian history in the 20th century. He has published seven books and more than 50 articles. His research has been supported by the American Council of Learned Societies, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Fulbright Foundation. He has been a Guggenheim Fellow, and a visiting scholar at the Sorbonne in Paris and at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. One of his interests is studying large geographical and multicultural “zones.” The Black Sea is one such zone: over many centuries it was a rich intersection of cultures from ancient Rome, Greece, Russia, Turkey, the Caucasus and the Balkans, all of which met around and across a unique body of water. We will taste each of these and reflect on combination and interaction.

Cruise to fabled Black Sea ports aboard Oceania Cruises’ newest ship, Riviera, a masterpiece of sophistication and grace. Her amenities are astounding in their scope and bounty, the cuisine is some of the finest at sea and the staff’s impeccable service is unparalleled, a hallmark of the Oceania Cruises experience.

For an extended touring experience, continue sailing on the Riviera on our Historic Reflections cruise, Oct. 2-12. This cruise features Distinguished Professor of History, Teofilo F. Ruiz, one of our most popular travel lecturers. Professor Ruiz is presently writing a book on the Mediterranean, and in 2012, he was selected as the Senior Research lecturer at UCLA and received the National Humanities Medal from President Obama.

CRUISE ITINERARYSEP 21: Depart for Turkey

SEP 22: ISTANBUL, TURKEYDepart 6PMEmbark on your luxury cruise aboard Riviera in Istanbul, the magnificent city astride two continents and divided by the Bosphorus.

SEP 23: NESSEBAR, BULGARIA Arrive 8AM–Depart 6PMLinked to the mainland by a man-made isthmus, Nessebar presents a welcoming blend of historical splendor and charming coastal atmosphere. Throughout this attractive Byzantine town, you’ll find plenty of time-tested treasures—offering everything you would expect from a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

SEP 24: CONSTANTA, ROMANIAArrive 8AM–Depart 6PMNestled on the shores of the Black Sea’s western coast is Romania’s largest seaport, Constanta. An ancient metropolis, its 2,500-year-old archaeological treasures scatter about the city, intermingling with its Venice-like winding alleyways and the lingering remnants from Greek, Roman and Turkish rule.

SEP 25: ODESSA, UKRAINE Arrive 8AM–Depart 5PMThe lovely city of Odessa claims a captivating past echoed by timeless beauty. A walk through the city recalls cultural gems like the famed Potemkin Steps, rising from the waterfront, the stunning five-domed Uspenski Cathedral and remnants of Catherine the Great’s Odessa fortress.

SEP 26: YALTA, UKRAINEArrive 8AM–Depart 8PMOn the southern tip of the beautiful Crimean peninsula, along the pebbled coastline and warm waters of the Black Sea, is the legendary town of Yalta—once a favorite with Russian royalty. The town is home to Livadia Palace, which brought Yalta to the world stage in 1945 when it hosted the Yalta Conference, and the Swallow’s Nest, a romantic castle overlooking the sea.

SEP 27: SEVASTOPOL, UKRAINEArrive 8AM–Depart 4PMAt once, Sevastopol fascinates and delights. Beyond its sapphire bay, are nearly 2,000 monuments, memorials and landmarks documenting the events of the Crimean War while neoclassical whitewashed buildings dot tree-lined streets. Balaklava, today a part of Sevastopol, is a former Crimean city and the scene of the ill-fated Charge of the Light Brigade, immortalized in the poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson.

SEP 28: SOCHI, RUSSIAArrive 9AM–Depart 6PMConsidered the “Pearl of the Black Sea,” Russia’s largest resort town claims a mountainous coastline, a delightful seaside promenade, lush botanical gardens and an urban atmosphere among its glitzy high-rises. Today, the port buzzes with excitement as it prepares to host the 2014 Winter Olympics.

SEP 29: SINOP, TURKEYArrive 8AM–Depart 6PMOn a strip of peninsula jutting into the Black Sea, Turkey’s most northerly city offers golden beaches that parallel the beauty of the Mediterranean and historic fortifications that have protected the city since the 7th century B.C. Once a prosperous Greek colony, mystery abounds here and ancient times come to life in temple ruins and incredible artifacts still being unearthed yet today.
