Six other buildings or sheds were counted on the 1901 census, to support farming activities.

After her husband’s death in 1899, Catherine continued farming with the help of her sons, John and Thomas. By that time, the oldest children, Bernard and Catherine had married. And later, Michael and James took off for the States!

By 1911 (see Census), John was in charge of the farm, with help from Patrick and Peter. Catherine lived on the farm until her death, 10 years later.

2.0 Catherine McManus – Philip Beggan

Catherine was born in St-George, Rigaud, on 02 Nov 1835. She was the eldest daughter and lived at home until her marriage.

She married Philip Beggan (or Biggin) on 23 Feb 1857 at Ste-Madeleine-de-Rigaud. He was 29 years old and she 21.

The act reads as follows:

Philip Beggan was born ~1828 in Ireland. He emigrated from the county of Monaghan, Ireland, probably with his parents. His brothers and sisters: Mary, Catherine, Bridget, and Francis were born in Lower Canada. The arrival of the Beggan family could have been in 1829-1830 as part of the Irish immigrants who seek work in Hawkesbury. Mary was born in Chatham and baptized in Notre-Dame-du-Bon-Secours in Montebello in Oct 1831. William Beggan and Margaret McCabe were also sponsors to Patrick Kelly (Ann McManus’s husband) born in Nov 1830. The Beggan probably moved to the Seigneurie de Rigaud when land was allotted in the early 1830ies.

Philip’s parents died in Rigaud: Margaret McCabe in Jun 1869 and William Beggan in Jul 1886.

Catherine and Philip settled in Ste-Marthe where he was a farmer.

Catherine’s Death:

Catherine died on 30 Mar 1865 in Ste-Marthe and was buried two days later in the parish cemetery. She was 29 years and 4 months old, although the church record says 39. Present at the burial were John Gallahan, her husband Philip and Rev. F. Aubry. Her death occurred within a series of events: she had just given birth, two weeks earlier, to Mary, a baby that did not survive the fifth month, and her father had died on the 25th.

Philip remarried to Margaret Holdship on 29 Apr 1872 in St-Eugene. She was 37, from East Hawkesbury, and the daughter of William Holdship and Elizabeth Kelly. She was also the sister of William Holdship, husband of Catherine Beggan (Philip’s sister). Of their children, only William Francis, born on 03 Jan 1880, survived. Occupation and Census Returns (1861, 1871, and 1881)

The Beggan’s had lots in the Seigneurie de Rigaud, concessions St-George and Ste-Marie next to the McManus’ – lots 34 and 35 (St-George south) in Rigaud and lots 19 and 20 (Ste-Marie south) in Ste-Marthe. Thus, Catherine and Philip settled on lot 20 located south of the village of Ste-Marthe, on which they built a frame house.

In 1861, as per the Census return, they have two children, William (4), and Catherine (2). The census was taken before Catherine’s death.

Not far from them on rang Ste-Marie lived Catherine’s sister-in-law, Mary, married to Thomas Downs. And, probably, lot #19 belonging to her father-in-law, William, is being farmed, as seen by the presence of Catherine and Francis Beggan from Rigaud (St-George) on the Census returns..

William was known as “William Stephen”. He lived at home in Ste-Marthe, helping his father on the farm. Later, he became a mining engineer. At this time, we don’t know where he practiced his skills. He moved to Cornwall, Ontario and resided on 2nd Street East. However, he must have lived outside Ontario because his death certificate indicates that he was there only for two years. He died on 06 Nov 1922 at the age of 64y, 10m, and 24 d, of cancer of the pancreas, after six months of illness. His sister, Margaret, reported his death to the registry. He is buried in Cornwall.

His brothers and sisters were: Ann, Elizabeth, and the twins, Bernard and Michael. They were all born in Ste-Marthe, but baptized in Ste-Madeleine de Rigaud.

Edward Kelly, just as William Beggan, went to the Seigneurie de Rigaud, probably, around 1831-32, and was allotted land in concession St-Henri, lot #31 north, and lot #30 south of St-Henri road. It was probably around 1860 that he took his family to St-Eugene. Patrick’s parents died in St-Eugene, Judith McIntee on 09 Apr 1870 at 60 yrs old and Edward Kelly, on 26 Oct 1883 at the age of 85, from old age.

Occupation and Census Returns (1861, 1871, and 1881)

Mary and Patrick settled in East Hawkesbury (outside St-Eugene village), after their marriage. Patrick owned a lot, #18 in concession VI, about 50 acres, of which half was cultivated, as per the 1861 Census. His father had moved from Ste-Marthe and had also settled on lots 9 and 10 of concession V, at the village of St-Eugene.

In 1871 (Census), he was still “farming”. However, by 1881 he was running a hotel in the village of St-Eugene. By that time, also, his family is complete, with grandpa Edward staying with them. His oldest son, Michael, is a clerk.

Figure 7. Mary McManus - Patrick Kelly Family. 1881 Census.

His lot 18 in concession VI has passed in the hands of his brother-in-law, James McManus. Patrick will be running the hotel with his son Michael until his death.

She remained single.

In 1871(Census), she is nowhere to be found. Perhaps she went to help out her sister, Anne, who married in 1867 and went to live in Prescott County. In the same period, James and Bernard also left home, and they do not appear in the census for both the area of Vaudreuil and Prescott.

In 1881, she was with Anne whose husband had various activities: hotel keeper, bailiff, farmer., in St-Eugene Village.

Later in 1901 and 1911, she is in Bernard’s family in the town of Hawkesbury where the later is operating a hotel.

Occupation and Census Returns (1881, 1901, 1911)

At the time of his father’s death, in 1865, Thomas was 24. He remained on the farm to help out, although he was then a “voyageur”. It is probably when he married that he acquired lot # 15 from Antoine Brunet. For the 1881 Census, taken on 12 Apr, the enumerator reported in an orderly fashion, so, we can easily determine who is where. Thomas had settled on his piece of land. The family counted then, three children, Edward, Bernard and Thomas. And it was to remained as such, since he passed away just over one month later,

1 Thomas Tremble was married to Margaret Farmer, Bridget’s sister.

Not much can be found on this family. Bridget went to Vankleek Hill, probably to get closer to her family, the McGreevy’s and the Farmer’s. In 1901, she resided on Mill St. with her son Bernard who was a clerk in a store. In 1911, she is still there, and Bernard, then 30, is a salesman.

We don’t know either what happened to her son Charles. Did he die at a young age also?

6.0 Michael McMannus – Ann Mullin

Michael was born in St-George, Rigaud, on 08 Oct 1843, and lived in the parental home until his marriage.

He married Ann Mullin on 01 Feb 1870 in St-Eugène, Prescott. Witnesses were Thomas Dowd, Annie M. Maneely.

The marriage record of St-Eugene says that she was minor. However, according to the St-Jean-Baptiste church register at L’Orignal, her vitals are:

b. 04 Mar 1848; bapt. 14 Jun 1848; sponsors: Cornelius Hurley and Mary Hurley.

She was the 8th of a family of 14 children, all born in Upper Canada, living in a log house, as per the 1861 Census. Her parents, Patrick Mullin and Margaret Tremble had a farm in East Hawkesbury (about 420 acres, concession 5, lot 23; concession 5, 6 and 7, lots 19).

Her parents were married in Ste-Madeleine-de-Rigaud on 19 Jun 1837. Her father, Patrick, born in Ireland, was from Hawkesbury, Upper Canada (bans were published in the parish of St-J. Baptiste de l’Orignal). His parents were James Mullin and late Hélène Hussion. Ann’s mother, Margaret, also, Irish, was from Rigaud, daughter of James Tremble, farmer, and Catherine Ward. She immigrated with her parents in the early 1830’s. Her parents settled later in Ste-Marthe. Witnesses at the wedding were Thomas and John Mullin, brothers to the groom and James Tremble, father of the bride.

Ann’s mother, Margaret Tremble, died on 05 Apr 1867, buried on 22 Apr 1867 in St-Eugene. Her father, Patrick, remarried to Elizabeth Milner, an English woman, Church of England. He passed away on 29 Jan 1879 at the age of 78, after 4 days of suffering of an inflammation of the bowels, and was buried in St-Eugene two days later. The death certificate shows that Michael, his son-in-law, was the informant of the death.

Michael and Ann died in Bay City, Michigan: Michael between 1900 and 1910 and Ann after 1930.

Michael McManus and Ann Mullin’s Children

Michael and Ann were parents to 10 children. Their children were baptized in Ste-Madeleine de Rigaud2, St-Eugene-de-Prescott and St-André d’Argenteuil3.

Occupation and Census Returns (1871, 1881, US1900-1930)

After their marriage, Michael and Ann settled next to his mother in St-George. His father having passed away, he, probably, cultivated the parental land with his brother, Thomas. The 1871 census also says that he was a “voyageur”. So was Thomas, but the latter married in 1873 and went on to farm in Ste-Marthe.

Figure 8. Michael McManus and Family in Rigaud, 1871 Census.

See also the 1881 Canadian Census image, on the next page.

It is probably in 1876 that the family moved to St-Eugene. Considering the order of the 1881 census and the McCallum as neighbours, it is possible that he cultivated one of the lots 19, initially belonging to his father-in-law. (see Appendix 6, Maps of Prescott County.)

However, farming did not seem to interest him. His brother, Bernard, and his two brothers-in-law, the Kelly’s were in the hotel industry. So, he went on to Pointe-fortune where he became himself, an innkeeper. He went across the Outaouais river to have his children baptized in the parish of St-André –d’Argenteuil.

McManus – Part 2

Figure 9. Michael McManus and Family in East Hawkesbury (St-Eugene), 1881 Census.

The period between the 1870 to 1890 were the days of the great exodus to the United States, in search of work and land, when over one million inhabitants of Quebec left for the United States.

Thus, again, Michael moved on and, in 1885, took his family to Michigan.

The US Census tell us a little bit more. In 1900, the family, Michael, his wife, and their sons (except for his son Michael who had deceased) were living at 713 N. Henry st. in West Bay City, Michigan where they owned a house. Michael was a day laborer, as were his sons, with Martin, the youngest, at school.

Figure 10. Michael and Family in West Bay City, Michigan; 1900 US Census.

What happened in the USA?

They lived in Bay City by Lake Michigan. It is possible that some of their sons went to Detroit.

Occupation and Census Returns (1871, 1881, 1891, 1901, 1911)

After their marriage, Ann and Bernard settled in East Hawkesbury (St-Eugene) where Bernard farmed. Looking briefly at the 1871 Census and the order of enumeration, it is possible that they had settled on the land of his father, Edward Kelly, just near the village. However, they were just a few years there, and must have gone to Vankleek Hill towards the middle of 1871 (his son, Edward, was baptized in L’Orignal), to operate a hotel or inn. (Census 1881). Bridget, Ann’s sister was living with them.

Figure 12. Ann McManus and Bernard Kelly - West Hawkesbury. Census 1881.

In 1891, they had a chamber maid living in and had employed 4 persons during the year.

Figure 13. Ann McManus and Bernard Kelly - West Hawkesbury. Census 1891.

Life was not so good to them. Within a few years, they lost their eldest children: Mary Ann in 1888 at almost 19 years of age, and then Edward in 1892, 21 years old. It is probably after these events that they retired from the hotel industry and moved to Ottawa.

From the 1901 Census, Ann and Bernard, and their sons John James and Henry were living at 328 Maria St., Ottawa. Maria Street is now the West part of Laurier, starting at Bank Street. John James, the oldest, was working as a clerk. Later, they moved to 114 College Street7, in St-George Ward. This is where Bernard resided at the time of his death.

What happened to the Children?

7 College street was a small street between Cumberland and King, at the south end.

William Holdship was the brother of Elizabeth Holdship whom Phillip Beggan, widower of Catherine McManus, married.

Henry:

He worked as a clerk for a metal works shop. He lived with his brother until his marriage to Laura McDonald on 30 Sep 1914 in Hawkesbury St-Alphonse. Laura died at the Ottawa Maternity Hospital on 08 Jul 1915. She was 36 yrs 3 mos old. Henry remarried later, on 11 May 1929 to Mary Malvina Lonsdale at Ottawa, St-Sacrement.

8.0 James McMannus – Margaret Downs

James was born in St-George, Rigaud, on 06 Feb 1848. It does not seem that he lived at home until his marriage, since he is not there as per the 1871 Census. However, at his marriage, he is said to be a farmer from St-Eugene. Therefore, he had left home to establish himself.

He married Margaret Downs (Maggie) on 05 July 1880 in Ste-Marthe, co. Vaudreuil. Witnesses were Amable Daoust, bedeau, Thomas Downs, father of the bride, and Antoine Gingras. He was 32, she, 23.

The act reads as follows:

She was the third child of a family of 8: Helen, Mary, Margaret, Catherine, Bridget, John, William and Agnes. Her parents, Thomas Downs and Mary Beggan were married on 14 Sep 1852 in Ste-Marthe. Bernard McManus, the ancestor, was present. Thomas, was from Hawkesbury. He was born (24 Dec 1820) in Ireland, his parents, Patrick Downs and late Catherine Mitchel, being from the County of Clare. Mary Beggan was Philip Beggan’s sister, born in Rigaud. The Downs family lived in concession Ste-Marie south, on lots # 8 and 9. Thomas Downs also acquired lot #5 just east. He did not remarry and raised his family by himself, and once the girls had taken husbands, he lived with his son John who, married to Olivine Joannette, raised a family of 15 children!. Thomas Downs passed away at the age of 84, in Apr 1904.9 He was buried in Ste-Marthe Cemetery.

8 The baptism act in the church registry for Ste-Marthe parish says “Le dix neuf septembre mil huit cent cinquante sept par nous prêtre curé soussigné a été baptize Marguerite née hier…”, being the 17th. However, the death certificate indicates the 18 Sept 1857.

9 Thomas Downs’ death must have been of great interest – the page recording his funerals in the Ste-Marthe church registry is missing!

Occupation and Census Returns (1881, 1891, 1901, 1911)

After their marriage, Ann and Bernard settled in East Hawkesbury (St-Eugene) where Bernard had a farm: Lot #18, Concession VI, south-east of the village10. This lot was Patrick Kelly’s, his brother-in-law. Patrick had settled there after his marriage to Mary. And, just about that time, around 1871, James did not seem to be anywhere (according to the 1871 Census). Perhaps was he trying his hands at owning his little piece of land? By the time he married Maggie, Patrick was hotel-keeping in the village and James was farming in the country.

James and Maggie’s beginning appears to be difficult. Their first two children, Agnes and Catherine, do not live past their second year. Then, the family grows into one of boys, with Mary Bertha, the only girl, probably having to fight to keep her place!

By 1911, the family is complete, Patrick, the youngest is 8 yrs old, Bernard, the oldest, 26. The next figure gives a picture of the family – everybody is “cultivating the land”!

10 Refer to Appendix 6 for the position of lot 18.

11 There is a controversy on the date of birth of Catherine, and a contradiction amongst the various sources, such as the nominal census. He birth is often given as December 1860. It is known that censuses are not reliable sources when these vitals are concerned. The church registry of Ste-Marthe parish does not have a Catherine Downs born in the last part of 1860. The date 07 Sep 1859, given in this document comes from the parish registry!

After their marriage, Bernard and Catherine settled in the Town of Hawkesbury where Bernard owned and operated a hotel, the Ottawa Hotel (Bridge Inn). It was located on Main Street. (1901 Census gives it civic number one).By 1901, his family is complete, and as the children grow older, they are able to speak both French and English (1911 Census). For Catherine, it appears to be a trying adventure. In 1911, Bridget, her sister-in-law, is living with them, and her niece Annie, also.

Bernard’s business grew. From the Census 1891, 1901, and 1911, we see that in 1891, he had two employees: one housemaid and a cook-waiter. In 1901, he was up to 12 employees. In 1911, the number of employees is not indicated but aside from “hotel keeping”, he is a salesman.
