David Marquet imagines a work place where everyone engages and contributes their full intellectual capacity, a place where people are healthier and happier because they have more control over their work-a place where

everyone is a leader.

Think anew about leadership

• Why do we need empowerment?• How reliant is your organization on the

decision making of one person or of a small group of people? What is the impact of that?

• What kind of leadership model does your business use?

Insight #2

Do something different

• Where is the pain and frustration greatest in your organization?• How would you describe the

culture of your workplace?• In what ways does leadership in

your organization take or give control?

Insight #3

Create leaders, not followers

• Why is doing what you are told so appealing to some? Do people

really just want to do as they are told?• If a snapshot of your business went viral on the Internet, what

would it reveal about your workers?• Do your procedures reinforce

the leader-follower model?

Insight #4

Act your way to new thinking

• What reasons do you hear for resisting change?

• What are some of the costs associated with doing things differently in your industry?

• Do you believe that you act first and think later or that you think first and

then change your actions?

Insight #5

Use “I Intend to ….” to create leaders at every level

Disempower passive follower phrases:• Request permission to ….

• I would like to …. • What should I do about …. • Do you think we should …..

• Could we …. Empowered phrases that active doers use:

• I intend to …. • I plan to ….

• I will ….

Insight #6

Return the problem unsolved

• What is the long-term impact of solving your people’s problems?

• Do you recognize situations in which you need to resist the urge to provide solutions? • When problems occur, do you immediately

think you just need to manage everything more carefully? In what ways could you start to

break away from this type of thinking?

Insight #7

Take deliberate action

• How do you feel and react when an employee admits to doing something on autopilot, without deliberately thinking about

the action or its consequences?• In what ways could implementing a system of taking deliberate action

eliminate errors in your company or within certain departments in your company?

• Do you think employees in your workplace will revert to acting hastily and

automatically in a real life situation?

Insight #8

We learn (everywhere, all the time)

• Which areas in your business are marred by mistakes because the lower-level

employees don’t have enough technical competence to make good decisions?• Would you consider writing a creed

for your organization that includes a “we learn” philosophy?

• Are your people eager to go to training?

Insight #9

Specify goals, not methods

• In what ways have your processes become the master rather than the servant?

• How could you ensure adherence to procedure while at the same time ensuring that accomplishing the objective remains

foremost in everyone’s mind?• Have you reviewed your operations

manual lately to replace general terminology with clear, concise, specific directions?

Insight #10

Don’t empower, emancipate

• In what ways are you limiting your leadership to empowerment?
