What Savvy Mac Users Should Know

Page 2: 10 Common Mac Myths

Myth # 1Microsoft Stole the GUI from Apple

True or False?

Page 3: 10 Common Mac Myths

FALSE!

Bill Gates (MSFT) and John Sculley (AAPL) signed a confidential, three-page agreement that granted Microsoft a "non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, perpetual, nontransferable license to use these derivative works in present and future software programs, and to license them to and through third parties for use in their software programs.”

Page 4: 10 Common Mac Myths

Sooo.....•Microsoft DID copy from Apple

•It had the expressed written consent of the CEO of Apple Computer.

•However, Bill Gates was later quoted as saying:

"Hey, Steve, just because you broke into Xerox's house before I did and took the TV doesn't mean I can't go in later and take the stereo."

Myth # 2Apple Stole the GUI from Xerox

True or False?

I couldn’t find a mug shot of Steve Jobs so here’s Hugh

Grant instead.

Page 6: 10 Common Mac Myths

FALSE!

• The compensation for the Xerox PARC technology sharing deal with Apple was in form of $1 million dollars pre-IPO Apple stock / investment (if Apple does well, Xerox will benefit from Apple’s success).

• The PARC demo took place in 1979. Xerox received its compensation in exchange for showing some prototypes that Xerox didn’t know what to do with.

• Jobs and several Apple employees including Jef Raskin visited Xerox PARC in December 1979 to see the Xerox Alto. Xerox granted Apple engineers three days of access to the PARC facilities in return for the option to buy 100,000 shares of Apple at the pre-IPO price of $10 a share.

Sooo.....

•Apple DID copy from Xerox

•It purchased every bit of this intellectual property in the form of stock transfer and stock discounts.

Myth # 3Macs are more secure than PCs

True or False?

Page 9: 10 Common Mac Myths

TRUE!

• User’s must consciously install software. In the GUI this requires an Admin Password. On the command line, this requires the sudo command followed by password

• No remote access protocols are loaded by default. All sharing preferences must be enabled by the user.

• Optional security tools, such as disabling iChat and Safari from opening files, file vault encryption, etc

• There are fewer Macs in use than PCs. Most Malware authors just don’t bother.

• The Mac App store will provide a definitive, reputable source for software.

• The Firewall is disabled by default.

• Security holes in Bonjour (not so ironically, more on Windows)

• Since the Intel switch, porting programs to a new platform is much easier, making OS X a more familiar target than in the past.

• As Apple’s market share grows it will attract more ne’er-do-wells and shenanigizers.

But not by much

Page 10: 10 Common Mac Myths

Myth # 4Macs are more expensive

True or False?

Page 11: 10 Common Mac Myths

TRUE!

>

AND

a BMW 550i Is more Expensive Thana Toyota Yaris

Page 12: 10 Common Mac Myths

Nice things cost money...

• No single core CPUs or Celerons• 802.11n / BT in all consumer Macs• Unibody Construction / most are aluminum• Bundled software for Video editing, MT Audio, web development, photo management and editing, DVD authoring and more with iLife suite.• LED backlit displays• backlit keyboards on most portables• The new MacBook air - c’mon... it’s awesome!

So shut up.

Page 13: 10 Common Mac Myths

On the flip side...

“Though Macs often have a higher up-front price than many business-class PCs, Macs are usually believed to have a lower total cost of ownership (TCO) due to lower support costs. A recent survey of IT professionals in large enterprise environments that have a mix of Macs and PCs overwhelmingly agree that Macs cost less than PCs to support.”

- Chris Froman - Ars Technica

Page 14: 10 Common Mac Myths

Myth # 5Macs Don’t support Blu-Ray

True or False?

Page 15: 10 Common Mac Myths

TRUE!

• Blu-ray support is not bundled with any version of Windows

• It is a 3rd party Codec that must be licensed, paid for and installed

• HP, Dell and others provide Blu-Ray support and cover it by Jacking up the prices of their products

• 3rd party Blu-Ray products are available for Mac• Blu-Ray is stupid anyway

• It’s almost 2011. We were supposed to have flying cars by now and you want me to buy a disc? A physical disk? Pa-lease!

and neither does Windows

Page 16: 10 Common Mac Myths

Myth # 6A Business can’t be run on Macs

True or False?

Page 17: 10 Common Mac Myths

FALSE!Here’s the most obvious Example:

Apple inc.

• Fortune 56 ranking• Over 300 retail stores• 35,000 full time employees• 0 PCs

Page 18: 10 Common Mac Myths

Myth # 7Macs are compatible with PCs

True or False?

Page 19: 10 Common Mac Myths

FALSE!Whew... That’s a relief!

• Microsoft has never released a 100% compatible version of Office for Mac

• No MS Access, Publisher, etc

• Microsoft’s online templates are Windows only

• Formatting problems between platforms and versions

• Microsoft: “Office 2011 is the most compatible version of office ever released!”

• Office 2011 supports VB Macros bringing Macro Viruses to Mac

• Intuit accounting software such as Quicken/Quickbooks have roadblocks and inconsistencies across platforms

• Windows Emulators / Virtual Machines must be used to run Windows Software

• This is a good thing!• If Macs were “Truly compatible,” They’d be subject to all of the

problems and malware

Page 20: 10 Common Mac Myths

Myth # 8Repairing permissions fixes wonky applications

True or False?

Page 21: 10 Common Mac Myths

FALSE!Permission denied!

• POSIX permissions only • Permissions repair does not include Applications, User files or third

party files at all• repairing permissions corrupted from system files will unlikely

correct problems with applications• It won’t hurt

Page 22: 10 Common Mac Myths

Myth # 9A Mac Hard Drive doesn’t need to be defragmented

True or False?

Page 23: 10 Common Mac Myths

TRUE!

•Not since OS 10.2 • Extended filesystems introduced DELAYED

ALLOCATION

• allowed files to be written in continuous chunks

• Fragmentation occurs very minimally

• Modern Hard Drives are fast enough to compensate

Well, kinda...

Page 24: 10 Common Mac Myths

Sooo.....•3rd party defragging utilities are available

• They’re designed to defrag your wallet more than your hard drive

•Minor, almost negligible performance increases can be gained by defragging

• If interrupted it may just destroy all of your data

Page 25: 10 Common Mac Myths

Myth # 10

Apple will discontinue OS X in favor of a more iOS like interface.

True or False?

Page 26: 10 Common Mac Myths

TRUE!

• Apple will discontinue the Macintosh as soon as it becomes unprofitable

• just as any sane company would

• 3.5 million Macintoshes sold in Q3 of 2010

• That’s a 33% increase over the previous year

• Last year, Mac portables didn’t have to compete with Apple’s own iPad

• Mac OS has already seen components of iOS and vice versa

• OS X’s App Store for SL and LION coming soon!

• iOS is very similar code to OS X under the hood

• Multi touch gestures since 2008

• Multitouch devices like Magic Mouse and Magic trackpad

Probably :)

Page 27: 10 Common Mac Myths

AND OF COURSE...

mAgic sCreen!

Page 28: 10 Common Mac Myths
Page 29: 10 Common Mac Myths

OS 9 was discontinued / so was

The Andy Griffith Show / so will be OS X

OS 9 was removed at a time when the

Macintosh desperately needed to evolve

Desktop computing as we know it is in the

twilight of it’s life

When it is replaced by Mobile and Cloud

computing, The Macintosh, Windows,

Desktop Linux all become irrelevant

It was replaced by a vastly

superior OS / so was OS 8 / so will

be OS X
