... removes swelling faster... to improve comfort and quality.

Recognized as National Dairy Shrine Distinguished Dairy Cattle Breeder during 2014 World Dairy Expo, the Paul Chittenden family of Dutch Hollow Farm, Schodack Landing, N.Y. has supplied over 100 proven sires and produced nearly 300 ACJA honor roll cows. They are known internationally for producing top Jersey genetics for production and the polled gene. Brothers Alan (cows), Brian (crops), and Nathan (youngstock) are partners with parents Paul and Melanie.

Three generations of the Chittendens and 2 generations of employees operate the farm, where milk from 685 Jerseys goes through Agrimark to Hudson Valley Fresh, Cabot Cheese, and Beechers Handmade Cheese in New York City.

Their willingness to educate consumers about how farmers care for the land and cattle is vital and was the focus of their 2013 WDE virtual farm tour.

To keep fresh cows comfortable and productive with quality udders, Alan Chittenden relies on Udder Comfort.

To reduce swelling in fresh cows, we spray udders 2x/day for the fi rst few days after calving. It removes swelling faster than anything to improve comfort and quality, especially helping fi rst-calf heifers come into milk better, he says.

For external application to the udder only after milking, as an essential component of udder management. Always wash and dry teats thoroughly before milking.

    Getting Kerryd Away

Steve and I milk together almost every single morning during the week. I dont know if that should be a hap-py or sad statement. Most of the days we get along just ne, now that we have our management agreement in place. He manages the milking parlor; I manage the house. We both agreed that we would do what the other asks, as long as its reasonable. I cant ask him to paint our bedroom and he cant ask me to scrub the parlor walls. Actually, he probably wouldnt even have to ask me to scrub the walls. Sooner or later, I wouldnt be able to handle the dirt and I would clean them. To be honest, there are days when I really dont like being in the milking parlor with Steve. I will admit that I am usually the one to screw up our mojo. I would rather sleep until 8 a.m. and then stay up working and nishing the dishes until 10 or 11 p.m. That doesnt work so well when I have to get up at 4:40 in the morning. Steve has told me about some of his pals that milk, or dont milk, with their spouses. One, apparently, had a very hard time believing Steve when he explained how much he enjoys milking with me every morn-ing. If only I felt the same every morning. Apparently, Steves friend went home and asked his wife to milk with him one particular morning. Things didnt go well. The friend explained to Steve, I guess I pushed all the wrong buttons, he said. Most of the time Steve and I get along quite well as long as he lets me have a bit of space and time each morning. When Steve forgets about the time and attitude ultimatum, we have problems. Just the other morning Steve stepped over the line

just a bit. He didnt press the completely wrong but-ton, but was working his way toward the red emer-gency switch. You know how songs get stuck in your head? Well, that was the game Steve, or otherwise known as Tim McGraw-Wanna-Be, started playing in the milking parlor Tuesday morning. Three days a week, we set up footbaths for our cows to keep their feet healthy. It keeps the cows comfortable and able to walk around, which helps en-courage them to walk up to the feed bunk and chow down. Chowing down leads to more milk production. The copper sulfate we use turns the water an ap-pealing shade of sky blue. The water reminds me of a water hazard on a golf course. All of a sudden, from the far-end of the milking parlor, I hear, From the land of sky-blue waters A few minutes later, I was emphatically thanking Steve for putting that useless song, and image of a cartoon bear, in my head. Should I sing something else? Steve asked.

Songs get stuck in my head As long as its not another song that is going to

be stuck in my head, I answered. After a bit of silence, I hear, Kum-baya, my Lord, kumbaya. Gee thanks Steve. Youre so helpful. I love having a song asking the Lord to come this way, because right then I felt like putting hot pokers in your eyes. McGraw-Wanna-Be continued to try to nd songs that would help me banish the incessant tunes in my head. No beer today, no beer today. You cant buy beer on Sunday. Walk like an Egyptian. Girls just wanna have fun! No matter how I explained to him that none of those songs qualify as one that wont get stuck in my head, he kept

singing to me. I must admit, he does do a rather romantic versionof the Johnny Cash hit Ring of Fire. I tried to explain that in order to expel the songsfrom my head, we need to make up our own words. I explained, Remember the other day I startedsinging to the No Beer Today tune, No calf today; nocalf today. You can have a calf on Monday. I have to go. I have too many songs playing in myhead. I hope you are not experiencing the same. For questions, or comments, e-mail me at [email protected]

Kerry and her husband Steve have operated their New Ulm, MN dairy farm as a team since 1993. Currently, they milk 130 cows with the help of several employees. They have two sons: Joey is a sophomore at South Dakota State University, Brookings majoring in dairy production and Russell is a senior at Cathedral High School in New Ulm.

    Just Thinking Out Loud

What can you say except Ahhh! When the fall weather is like this, you just have to pause, exhale and enjoy the moments. I want to wrap my arms around this weather and hold on for dear life. I want to savor every warm, sunny- lled minute because I know once it is gone, it will be a long time in winter wear. Right now, sweatshirts are just warm enough. The wild tem-perature swings earlier this month felt like the weath-er was going through its own type of menopausal hot ashes. We didnt know if we should grab insulated coveralls or if just a t-shirt would be enough. Right now, I think the temperature has stabilized to a point of perfection for the season. Now if we can just hang on to this weather moment. Trying to hold on to the weather is like trying to hold on to a bouquet of balloons on a breezy day. Your knuckles turn white because you are holding on so

tight. You dont want the strings to slip through your ngers. You want to enjoy the sight of colorful bal-loons dancing in the sky anchored to your hand. The feeling of joy this moment brings to you lightens your heart. But eventually, the balloons will break free and oat away. This beautiful fall weather will also even-tually break and disappear. I guess we better enjoy every minute we have before fall slips through our ngers and winter arrives. The gorgeous dry days weve been experiencing lately have helped to push harvest along. We are in the nal stages. The combine arrived this morning to start taking out the high moisture corn. It is coming out in a range between not too wet and not too dry. Its just about right, except I would call it more like mid-mois-ture corn. The warm temperatures, low humidity and an early killing frost have pulled the extra moisture

out of everything. The yields have been mixed. Some elds arent quite what we were expecting but at leastthere will be enough feed for the cows and extra to store and sell later. The warm fall weath-er reprieve has given me a chance to wash win-dows without having to wear neoprene gloves to protect my ngers from frostbite. For many years, I have washed windows when it was a wee bit too cold without special gloves. Ill be done with the barn windows soon and can then turn my at-tention to the house win-dows. There are still too many bugs crawling aroundon the southwardly facing house windows. The warmsun rays re ecting off the windows are a magnet, drawing all kinds of bugs looking for a place to warmup and escape the inevitable cold. Im going to have to wait until a frost takes them out for good before I can wipe away their trails across the glass. Most of the leaves on the oak trees are scatteredaround the yard and some are piled into corners where the swirling north winds dropped them. Im waiting for the big elm tree next to the machine shed to n-

ish dropping its dry leaves before I start to rake. IfIm lucky, a good strong wind can blow most of theleaves out of the yard and across the open elds. Un-fortunately, the corn eld north of the house was com-bined, so I may end up with more dried corn stalkdebris in the yard than leaves when the wind stops blowing. My friend, Ann, says she doesnt rake the leavesin her yard. The sound of dry leaves crunching underher feet is a sound of the season she treasures. The sight of kids playing in leaf piles around the yard helpkeep her young at heart. I agree. There are so many sights and sounds of this season I enjoy and treasure.Wiping off your chin after biting into a crisp, juicyapple. Snuggling under blankets on a moonlit hay-ride. Roasting weenies until they are well done overa crackling re. Switching cows under a crisp starlitnight sky looking for the Big Dipper. Warming myhands up over a steaming bowl of bouja. (For those outside of central Minnesota, bouja is a combination of every type of meat and veggie cooked outside in ahuge kettle until you cant recognize anything.) These are a few of my favorite fall things. We have had a great second half of fall weath-er, but the temperatures arent the only special thingabout this season. The sky has been full of wonderand delight. The blood moon lunar eclipse earlier thismonth was a great morning treat as I headed out forchores. The solar eclipse at sunset this week will bea unique opportunity to play in the sun looking forcrescent shaped shadows. I wish I still had little kids around to share these moments of wonder with. Of course, nothing can match the beauty every nightat sunset when the sky becomes an artists pallet of reds, oranges, blues, purples and every other color inbetween hovering between the horizon as daylight yields to the night time sky. As my grip on this fall weather starts to slip andgive way to the next season, Im going to squeeze ev-ery extra moment out of these special days and nightsas I hold onto fall. Mike Meyer

We have 1,250 cows plus young stock, and we farm approximately 1,200 acres. We chose to plant Pioneer brand hybrids for corn silage because they have perfomed extremly well in our test plots over the years and they tend to have consistantly good yields. They hold good milk production per acre.

    Jason Baeseman

I chose to plant Pioneer brand alfalfa simply because we always get good results. I started with it, then planted another brand for a little while and I went back to Pioneer because it was simply better.
