Dr. Newman Awarded University of Louisville 2010 Alumni FellowDr. Mark Newman - School of Medicine: The Alumni Fellow awards are presented annually to graduates who have proven to be exemplary ambassadors for their University of Louisville schools and colleges through their contributions to

their professional fields and their communities. University of Louisville schools or colleges nominate Alumni Fellows and final selection is made by the Alumni Association. Dr. Newman was one of several to receive this award for 2010 during their annual Homecoming celebration.

Warren M. Zapol, MD, is the emeritus Anesthetist-in-Chief at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Reginald Jenney Professor of Anaesthesia at Harvard Medical School. From 1994 to 2008, Dr. Zapol served as anesthetist-in-chief at MGH and is currently the director of the MGH Anesthesia Center for Critical Care Research. A graduate of MIT and the University of Rochester School of Medicine, Dr. Zapol’s major research efforts include studies of acute respiratory failure in animals and humans. Supported by the National Science Foundation, he has led nine Antarctic expeditions to study the diving mechanisms and adaptations of

the Weddell seal. Through that research his team learned how marine mammals avoid decompression illness and hypoxia. In 2003, he was awarded the Intellectual Property Owners Association’s Inventor of the Year Award for the treatment of hypoxic human newborns with inhaled nitric oxide, a technique now used to save the lives of thousands of babies each year that he pioneered with his MGH team. In 2006, a steep mountain glacier in Antarctica was named for Dr. Zapol. In 2008, he was appointed by President George W. Bush as the academic representative to the U.S. Arctic Research Commission.

They will learn how to set up the block area for maximum efficien-cy in the OR environment, improve their decision making ability and make choices in the performance of regional anesthesia. A one-on-one discussion with the Duke Faculty member reviewing cases, scanning techniques and the image library as well as covering handout materials will augment the preceptorship experience.

Cooke: [email protected] in the Duke Intraoperative TEE Preceptorship spend one three-day session in the cardiac operating suites, observing techniques of intraoperative TEE and interpretation of images. Preceptors will participate in active discussions with cardiothoracic anesthesia faculty and fellows, and learn the basic TEE exam. They will also learn how to troubleshoot difficult cases and enhance their decision-making skills in the operating room. Cases will be reviewed with fellows and faculty and im-ages from pathology libraries will be used to augment the preceptorship experience.
