  • Report The board of trustees of Yayasan Kelab-Kelab Rotary Malaysia recently approved a sum of RM10,000 per district for the purpose of this Bursary Program. It was agreed that Sipitang district would be the first to receive the bursaries as it was a 3 hour drive from Kota Kinabalu and the children in this rural district needed the most help. This pioneer project was set to benefit 50 Primary 5 students of various schools in the rural district who come from impoverished backgrounds of RM500 household income and below. Each student was given a Back-to-School pack worth RM150 including a bilingual dictionary, school bag with stationery set, UPSR workbooks, exercise books, snacks and RM50.00 in cash. The list of specially selected students was supplied by the Sipitang District officer and planning for the organisation of the Bursary Handover was left in their capable hands. A total of about 150 people attended the handover and The Rotary Club of Likas Bay was given the honour to be the lead club for the first edition of the YKKRM Bursary Program held on Wednesday 21st November 2018, 10.00am at the Sipitang Sports Complex meeting room. Present at that time were representatives of the YKKRM Board of Trustees, Rotarians led by Rotary Club of Likas Bay, Officers of the Sipitang District Education Department, Headmasters and teachers of 11 primary schools as well as the 50 selected students and their respective parents. The event was carried out smoothly and the positive impact was evident in the smiling faces of all present especially the needy students and their families. List of attendees (+/- 150 pax): 1. It is hoped that the following programs tentatively to be held in Nabawan (9.1.19) and Kota Belud (16.1.19) will both run as smoothly and continue to uphold equity in education. What sets this Bursary Program apart from other such program is that the District Education Office coordinates with all the schools in his district to identify a target group of students who need our help the most and will benefit the most from our bursary program. It was a challenge to get all the students some of whom came from as far at 50 minutes’ drive in the interior of Sipitang just for this event. This clearly shows the commitment of the organisers as well as how crucial this type of help is to the low income families with many mouths to feed and many children to prepare for school. On behalf of the organising committee, I would like to thank everyone who made the 1st YKKRM Bursary Program possible and look forward to the next ones in January 2019.
