Progress Report
Summary:
• Data collection methods
• Participants collecting data for WP3
• Criteria of data being collected
• Creation of Database • Reporting and end use of database
Task 3-1: Development of Methodology and Tools
Aim- Development of methodology and analysis tools to identify RTD projects leading to innovative product development and employment of researchers
Task 3-1 Development of Methodology and Tools
6
Data Collection MethodsWhat data do we want to collect?
•Wish to collect FP4,FP5,FP6 projects as well as those not belonging part of a Framework Programme in the four subject areas outlined: Green vessel design and operationsInnovative vessels and floating structuresInnovative marine equipment, systems and toolsEnhanced marine safety and security
How will we collect this data?
•Use of both Secondary and Primary Data Collection
Primary data collection
Secondary data collection On-Line Databases
Questionnaires (email)
Task 3-1 Development of Methodology and Tools

Data Collection Methods
Questionnaire
Other research projects outside of FP4,5,6 such as those supported by research councils, government departments and industry.
Websearches using on-line databases –CORDIS and EurOcean
CORDIS
• CORDIS – http://cordis.europa.eu/home_en.html
• “An information space for European R&D and exploitation of European R&D results”
• Holds information on FP4,5 & 6 projects
EurOcean
• EurOcean – http://www.eurocean.org/
• The European Centre for Information on Marine Science and Technology. European Marine Research Funded Projects.
• Holds information on FP6 projects
Task 3-1 Development of Methodology and Tools

Data Collection Methods
Websearches (CORDIS and EurOcean)
• Advantages- use of secondary data means we are able to collect large volumes of information from reliable sources in a shorter period of time.
• Disadvantages – human error, inconsistency of databases (reliability could be questioned).
Questionnaires
• Advantages – quick and easy to distribute. In terms of projects allows us to collect projects beyond framework programmes to expand our database. Participants contacts.
• Disadvantages – Low response rate.
Task 3-1 Development of Methodology and Tools

Participants collecting information
Websearches
• FP5 - University of Glasgow & Strathclyde (UGS)
• FP6 - National Technical University of Athens (NTUA)
• FP4 - School of Marine Science and Technology, University of Newcastle (UNEW)

Creation of Database
• Access Database was set up to store data of the research projects
• Advantages: -Easy to use
-Large quantities of information can be stored
-Information can be easily located e.g Queries
-Tool for developing reports.
Task 3-1 Development of Methodology and Tools
12
Creation of Database
• Access database set up to be used by UGS. Information split into three separate databases
• Themes- Is it possible for research projects to have more than one theme.
- Themes could have several Sub-Topics. Sub-Topics were not decided upon at the start but it had been decided that the this could be outlined at a later date.
• Partners – Most projects have a range of participating partners.
- Some partners are likely to have participated in several different research projects and appear more than once on the database.

Creation of Database
• Excel Database sent to participating partners NTUA and UNEW
• Guidelines given to NTUA and UNEW outlining information sought and how this information should be inputted for consistency
• Adapted Guidelines as projects first begin to be collected
• At regular intervals NTUA and UNEW provides UGS with collected research projects which UGS then imports into the Access database
• Research projects collected by questionnaires will be inputted in the Access database directly by UGS from the word documents
Task 3-1 Development of Methodology and Tools
14
Reporting and end use of database
• Database available for use by Academics, those in industry, students and those belonging to different fields who wish to move into the maritime transport sector.
• Once all desired research projects have been collected the Report Tool of Access can be used to summarise results and identify areas (e.g use of themes and sub-topics) where there is a high demand for researchers. Excel will be used to display results using graphs and bar charts.
• A series of Queries will be created which will to allow individuals to search for specific types of data
Task 3-1 Development of Methodology and Tools
15
Task 3-2
Establishment of database for innovative product development FP5
- Searched and collected research projects via
http://cordis.europa.eu/fp5/projects.htm outlining different programme areas. - Details of 17, 038 projects- Use of http://cordis.europa.eu/search/index.cfm?fuseaction=search.simple
in conjunction for further details
Research projects from participating partners
- Received projects and imported into database from excel
Questionnaires

Planned Activities
• Continue to collect FP5 projects.
• Collect projects from NTUA and UNEW – at a suggested period of every 2 months.
• Once projects have been collected they will be imported into access database.
• Ask Promarc members to send out questionnaire to their contacts.
• Input data from completed questionnaires into access database.
