Teaching the International Student

• Our students come to ITU from other countries. In some cases this is their first experience in the US.

• You need to be clear about your policies, rules and class requirements. Just like domestic students they will get away with as much as they see they can.

• Don’t assume they understand attendance, assignments, exams, etc.

• Have your syllabus ready and distribute it on the first day of class!

4

Syllabus Standards and Requirements

• You are required to create a syllabus for each of your classes.

• See syllabus template and sample syllabus handout.

• We will be checking for compliance.

Use the EMS• You are REQUIRED to use the Education

Management System (EMS) for all of your course materials and activities.

• Exams, quizzes, lectures, assignments, projects, … everything needs to be uploaded, created and made accessible in the EMS.

• The EMS provides a central location for all students, faculty and staff to find course related documentation.

• TAs and the Learning Resource Center can help you build your class in the EMS.

The Role of your Teaching Assistant (TA)

(Faculty Handbook page 27)TAs CAN:– Help you create your EMS class.– Help you to better communicate with your students.– Help with attendance & distribute info to your

students.– Assist in course preparation activities and clean up.

TAs CAN’T:– Collect or grade student work.– Should not have access to the grade book in the EMS.– Should not perform lectures in your absence.– Should not proctor exams in your absence.

Online Exams are discouraged

• At least one exam must be taken in class (preferably the final exam).

• The exam or activity completed in class must count (significantly) towards the student’s final grade.

• It is acceptable to offer take-home midterms or other projects.

Page 8: 1 Welcome New and Returning Faculty The ITU management wants you to have a successful, effective and productive Spring 2013 trimester

8

Final Exam Administration

• Your TA should not take the SAME exam.• Do not ask your TA to print the exams.• Joel will print them for you. Send an email

request 2-3 days in advanced to [email protected]

• The ITU administration will help you conduct your final exams as well.

ITU does NOT offer online classes(Faculty Handbook page 39)

• The EMS is used to store and distribute information, not to deliver a class.

• Students use the EMS to upload their work for grading. It’s a centralized storage location.

• The EMS is NOT the class and should not be used as a substitute for class attendance.

• Physical class attendance is required for a student to earn a grade in your class.

Page 10: 1 Welcome New and Returning Faculty The ITU management wants you to have a successful, effective and productive Spring 2013 trimester

10

Student Grading (Faculty Handbook page 30)

• All assignments should be graded and the grades recorded in the EMS.

• There is NO requirement to grade attendance BUT attendance needs to be taken.

• Final grades are entered into the EMS.• If a student does NOT attend your class they

should be issued an F grade no matter what work they have submitted online. Physical class attendance is required!

Change of Grade Policy (Faculty Handbook page 31)

• Students will ask for better grades. It’s a reality of teaching.

• We don’t just give them better grades unless there is an error in the original grade.

• Challenges to grade records must be made within one term of the alleged error.

• The official grade change policy must be followed.

Page 19: 1 Welcome New and Returning Faculty The ITU management wants you to have a successful, effective and productive Spring 2013 trimester

19

Incomplete Grades (Faculty Handbook page 32)

• Incomplete grades (“I”) may only be issued when merited.

• Students must request the “I” and must be in good standing when the request is made.

• The “I” will turn into an “F” after one term following the issuance of the “I.”

• Faculty should work with the student and make the grade change request when missing work is submitted.
