Fusion Innovation Research and Energy®

Princeton, NJ

ARIES Pathway Project MeetingApril 5, 2011

Bethesda, MD

Three ICF/IFE DOE Reviews are in Progress

1. National Academy Review of Inertial Fusion Prospects for Power

2. Review of ICF Target Physics for #1- a classified panel to respond to requests from IFE Committee

3. Review of National Ignition Campaign - Headed by Koonin- Quarterly reviews by about 10 individuals who submit individual reports Koonin who then issues a summary report

- Summary reports are on FIRE (search top page for Koonin, or Campaign)

In addtion, there is an upcoming EPRI Review that will review all fusion approaches. The title is Fusion Energy for Power Production: Status Assessment, Identification of Challenges and Strategic Plan for Commercialization . The first Workshop scheduled for April 13 has been postponed until late June or early July.

Economic Competitiveness is the Metric for Chu and Koonin

• Secretary Chu at PPPL Oct 2010 - “A nuclear power plant at 6-9$B is problematic for the nuclear power industry. With ITER costing ~ $20B, what are the prospects for magnetic fusion?”

• Koonin made a similar comment at the March 2010 FESAC meeting. We responded by citing the ARIES study results.

• How do we strengthen our response to this question? Related to the Mountain of Death problem mentioned before?
