The  Graduate  School  organized  and delivered Research Impact Week in January.  The  event  successfully  promoted  existing activity  and  developed  future  potential  at UNMC.   Over  the  course of  the  five days staff  and  students  had  an  opportunity  to attend  workshops,  training  courses, presentations  and  social  gatherings  with  a focus  on  integration  and  research development.  courses,  presentations  and social  gatherings  with  a  focus  on integration and research development.

British Malaysia Chamber of Commerce 21 January 2010 

The British Malaysia Chamber of Commerce held  its  first board meeting  outside  of  KL  city  at  the  University  of  Nottingham Malaysia Campus.   The board members  took  the  time  to  talk  to academics  and  students,  at  a  social  gathering  hosted  by  the Graduate School, about possible research projects, employability and life in Malaysia.  Member companies range in size from British and Malaysian SMEs to multi­national corporations, and include some of the world’s leading organisations such  as:  AXA,  BAE  Systems,  BP,  Etihad,  Flowcrete,  Genting,  Guinness, Hilton, HSBC, Laura Ashley, Malaysia Airlines, UNMC, Prudential, Royal Bank  of  Scotland,  Rolls­Royce,  Shangri­La,  Shell,  Standard  Chartered, Tesco, TNT, UMW, YTL and many, many others.

28­29 JANUARY 2010  

The  University  of  Nottingham  Malaysia  Campus hosted  the  SEAEU  workshop  at  the  Chulan  Tower Facility.  The  workshop  speakers  were  selected  for their  disciplinary  expertise  and/or  their  specialist knowledge of ecosystems of the SEA region. The mix of  participants  was  unique  and  reflected multidisciplinary capacities in at least seven European and SEA countries. The objective of  the meeting was to use this expertise to build critical mass around two `researchable challenges’ with specific reference to the SEA  region.  A  direct  consequence  of  the  workshop was the development of a number of project proposals for EU funding.   The  workshop  was  designed  to  establish  a `Community  of  Practice’  of  researchers  and stakeholders  working  with  SEA  ecosystems and agro ecosystems.     SEA­EU­NET  is  a  project  within  the  European Commission’s  7th  Framework  Programme. The  four  year  project  started  in  January  2008 and  currently  has  25  key  S&T  institutions  (17 participants  and  8  additional members  of  the  steering board) from Europe and Southeast Asia. The strategic objective  of  SEA­EU­NET  was  "integrating  and strengthening  the  EU­ASEAN  Science  and Technology  Dialogue  through  coordination  and supporting activities”.   SEA­EU­NET actively increases the quality, quantity, profile  and  impact  of  bi­regional  Science  and Technology  (S&T)  cooperation  between  the  ten member  countries  of  the  Association  of  South­East Asian  Nations  (ASEAN)  and  the  Member  and Associated  Member  States  of  the  European  Union (EU).  In  particular,  SEA­EU­NET  aims  to  increase and  strengthen  SEA  participation  in  the  FP7 programmes  (the  EU’s  funding  programme  for international research and development). 

Prof. Sayed Azam­Ali, Meeting Coordinator said, “By hosting  the  meeting  and  designing  its  structure, UNMC  colleagues  had  a  unique  opportunity  to network with key researchers at the interface between natural and managed Ecosystems.”

Visitors and Visits Below are just some of the visits that have taken place between January and March of 2010.  UNMC has played host to senior academics, ministers and industry leaders as it continues to interact with the wider community and foster links and partnerships throughout Malaysia and further afield.  14/1/2010  VC Prof David Greenaway delivered a guest lecture at the GEP Conference  15/1/2010  VC Prof David Greenaway and PVC Knowledge Transfer Prof Chris Rudd were  joined by Alex     Knox from Dyson on a tour of UNMC 20/1/2010  VP Research Prof Sayed Azam­Ali visited MAFC in Puchong 11/2/2010  Minister of Higher Education Y.B. Dato’ Seri Mohamed Khaled Bin Nordin  visited  UNMC  and     was hosted by Puan Maraton Yahya 17/2/2010  VP Research Prof Sayed Azam­Ali visited MPOB where he was hosted by Datuk Dr. Mohd Basri     Wahid 23/2/2010  Julie Thomas from the VC’s Office visited the Semenyih Campus and delivered a “Minute Taking     and Best Practice” training course for administrators   Graduate School Trip to the UK

Midlands Conference Centre 

Graduate  School  Malaysia  Campus  members  Christopher  Hill, Deepa Kumari,  Anita  Pathma  and Callistus  Fernandez  spent  two weeks on the UK Campus in March 2010 working with colleagues from the UK Graduate School.  The aim of the trip was to promote best practice, improve campus connectivity and gain a broader understanding of the overall Graduate School direction and ethos.  Over  the  course  of  the  trip  the  team  members  attended  research training courses, staff development workshops, social events,  student presentations, visited Graduate Centre's at University Park, Jubilee  Campus  and  Sutton  Bonnington,  took  part  in  a  day­long presentation for Iain Cameron, Head of RCUK’s Careers and  Diversity  Unit  and  worked  with  the  VC’s  Office.  A  key  aspect  of  the  two week  trip was  an Administrators Away Day held at the East Midlands Conference Centre.  Deepa Kumari, Anita Pathma and Phoebe Zhang, China Campus Graduate School, joined  the  full UK  team  for  the  first  ever  collective Away Day.     Deepa Kumari and Anita Pathma said, “it was a great learning ex­perience,  resulting  in  us  adapting  UK  standards  and  practices  in everyday management of the Graduate School Malaysia Campus.”

Graduate School Research Training Courses 

The Graduate School Malaysia Campus,  in  line with  the UK Graduate School,  offered  a  series  of  research training courses during the first three months of 2010 to match the needs of early, mid and late career research students.  Among the list of courses offered were Critical Thinking, Beginning your Thesis, Research Skills, Working Effectively in Research, Presentation Skills and Building Confidence, Planning your Research, Introduction to SPSS and Advanced Presentation Skills online.

Graduate School Christmas Party  17 December 2009  The Graduate School welcomed over 60 students to the end of term Christmas Party. Students were treated to Christmas foods from around the world and even introduced to the concept of Christmas Crackers!
