When You Are Delivering Reinforcement

• Do it immediately...while the Action is occurring ..• When not reinforcing immediately, ask How did you do that

{accomplishment the results).• Use listening as an Reinforcement.• Maintain a 4:1 ratio (four positives to one negative).• Don’t Reinforce and punish at the same time {sandwich}.• Don’t Reinforce and set new goals at the same time.• Celebrate and reward the group or team for accomplishment.• Reinforce individuals for their specific contributions.

When you Need to Listen

• Stop what you are doing• Maintain an attentive posture.• Look at the person, maintain eye contact.• Encourage the talker. Use phrases like, And then what happened?

Smile, nod.• Ask opened-ended questions: What do you think...?• How did you feel...?• Rephrase what you have heard to make sure you understand.• I hear you saying ...• If I understand you ...• Do you mean ...?
