Challenges and Opportunities forJJ-Degussa Chemicals in the Philippines

The Philippine feedmilling industry is an integralpart of the agricultural based economy linking

the grain sector and the livestock and poultryindustries. It has expanded from a “way of life” a fewdecades ago to an enormous industry today.Intensive research and advances in animal nutrition, genetics, physiology and production have led to this

emergence. The feed industry plays an importantrole in animal production, with feed estimated toaccount for 70% of total production cost.

As one of the industry’s major suppliers of aminoacids and othernutritional products,JJ-Degussa Chemicals (P)Inc. (JJDP) hasestablished its name notonly through theproducts that itdistributes but alsothrough the servicetools that it offers. Ourcommercially andtechnically competentFeed Additives Teamworks in synergy withour principals and theindustry in meeting itsobjectives of producingquality feeds suitable tothe changing needs ofthe industry at thelowest possible cost.

Indowater 2001 washeld alongside thePERPAMSI (IndonesianWater SupplyAssociation) Conferenceand was also endorsedby IATPI (IndonesianSociety of Sanitaryand EnvironmentalEngineers). Theattendance numbered

The year 2001 wasone of the worst yearsever for PDAMs duemainly to the economiccrisis and the politicalinstability in Indonesia.During the Indowaterexhibition there was, however, increasingoptimism that 2002-2003will be a turning point. This optimism is basedupon drastic changes inmanagement structureswithin the public sectorand increased amountsof money being allocatedfor municipal watersupply.

Most of the exhibitorsat Indowater 2001were pump suppliers, consultants andcontractors within thewater and wastewatertreatment marketsegments. For thesesegments, PT Tiga IkanEngineering offered acomplete range ofpumps and screensrecognised in themarket as quality brands. The company alsopresented a new rangeof products, helicalrotor pumps, whichcreated very favourableattention. MHE-Dematic (S) Pte Ltd (MDS) hascompleted a turnkey project to build an

“In-Line Engine Gantry System” for SingaporeAero Engine Service Pte Ltd. The systemdisassembles and assembles Rolls Royce aeroengines into modules for periodic inspection, maintenance and replacement of engine parts.

The system is expected to service 200engines a year. An array of four units of MHE-Demag overhead travelling cranes, turntablesand latching devices facilitates thetransportation of engines and componentsbetween stations and storage bays.

The system transports engines from trailersparked outside the facility to the enginedisassembly/assembly workstations. The“hospitalisation” bay is designed forboroscoping the engine, while threedisassembly stations are available todisassemble the engine into seven modules.Another three stations re-assemble theengine.

As a result of an amicably concluded agreement, effective 1 January 2002, the MHE-Dematic

group has transferred its “Systems” business activitycovering warehouse & distribution, automotive, airport technology and postal automation as well asits “Mobile Communication Technology” (MCT)business activity covering batch and real time handheld terminal solutions to Siemens DematicSingapore and its regional affiliates.

This is in line with the world-wide restructuring ofthe Siemens Dematic activities into three distinctbusinesses namely “Logistic Systems”, “Cranes &Components” and “Mobile Cranes” following thepurchase by Siemens AG from Vodafone of somebusiness sectors of Mannesmann AG more than 2years ago and the subsequent merger of theMannesmann Dematic activities and the LogisticSystem activities of Siemens AG to form SiemensDematic in early 2001. While the Logistic System

activity became housed under Siemens Dematic, theCranes & Components and Mobile Cranes activitieswere injected into two separate subsidiaries.

The transfer of the “Systems” and MCT activitiescovers the sale of all business assets and transfer ofmore than 60 employees involved in this business toSiemens Dematic and its regional affiliates.

Reflecting the new strategic business focus of theMHE-Dematic group, the shareholding structure hasalso been aligned with Demag Cranes & ComponentsGmbH taking over the 50 % shareholding fromMannesmann Dematic AG.

EHS PAGE

Given the Jebsen & Jessen group’s strongcommitment to improved staff care and

environmental protection, PT Triton TextileIndonesia (TTI) was quite naturally honoured tobe chosen as the textile division’s pilot site for thedrive towards certification under ISO 14001 andOHSAS 18001.

On 16 October 2001, TTI officially embarked onan effort to become certified under the ISO 14001and OHSAS 18001 systems. At a small gatheringfor staff and guests, Group Managing Director, MrHeine Askaer-Jensen delivered a speech on behalfof the Steering Committee. Leo Sigurdsson, theProject Manager of the drive and an environmentalmanagement trainee, gave a brief presentationintroducing Triton Textile’s EHS Policy to all staff.Karsten M Lund, our Regional Director, coordinated the event and explained the EHSinitiative from the Triton Textile Business Unitperspective.

In order to visualise the TTI employeecommitment to the EHS Policy, each staff memberwas asked to read and sign the company’s EHSPolicy. Afterwards, each person was presented with

TTI Launches ISO/OHSAS Drive!a small ‘anti-stress ball’, which depicts a green andblue globe meant to symbolise a healthy earth.Increased internal awareness has been establishedas a principal milestone on the road to successfulimplementation of the project.

TTI being a buyer’s representative office, the EHSinitiative presents a unique set of challenges giventhat the company has no direct control over themany manufacturing processes that the company isinvolved with. Our initial task will be to assess ouroffice EHS situation, to evaluate and discuss EHSissues with Triton Textile suppliers and contractors, and to provide EHS consultancy to our factoriesand customers. The ultimate objective will be tosource factories of a certain EHS standard andpromote these to our customers.

As many companies that have already completedthe programme know, certification does not comeeasily, but the dedicated EHS team at TTI has madeit a personal challenge to succeed in promoting theproject internally and in achieving certification byour mid-2002 deadline.

As our motto clearly states, it is after all a matterfor ‘you and your future generations’!

PT Triton Textile Indonesia launched its ISO 14001 & OHSAS 18001 programme on 16 October 2001.

PROFILE

Jebsen & Jessen (SEA) Group of Companies is part of a business enterprise that dates its origins to a trading partnership formed in Hong Kong in 1895. The Group,

incorporated in the early 1960s in South East Asia, is today a highly-diversified entity engaged in seven core businesses: Chemicals, Communications, Industrial, Marketing, Material Handling, Packaging

and Process Engineering. With a focus on South East Asia, the Group has established a firm foothold in the region through more than 40 subsidiaries and associate companies in Singapore, Indonesia,

Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, employing approximately 2,500 people. Since its incorporation, the Group has grown dramatically in tandem with the region’s dynamic economic

growth, strengthening its reputation as a leading provider of state-of-the-art technology and products — committed to fulfilling customer needs with professionalism and integrity. Outside the

region, the Group enjoys close ties with sister companies in Hong Kong, China, Denmark, Germany and the USA.

Profile: Hans Ulrich HansenUli Hansen’s association with the Jebsen & Jessen

group dates back to 1978, a year after hisgraduation from high school in Aabenraa, Denmark.

In that year, Uli ventured from his small village inDenmark to the large, exciting city of Hamburg,Germany where he was offered an apprenticeship withJebsen & Jessen Hamburg. During the next two yearsUli received practical on-the-job training combinedwith the German system of apprenticeship, whichincluded several days of formal education each week ata commercial college. He graduated from commercialcollege in Hamburg with a commercial degree in 1980.

While at Jebsen & Jessen Hamburg, it was decidedthat Uli would eventually go to Singapore and joinJebsen & Jessen Singapore’s Degussa Department, so inpreparation for this move he went through aninternship at Degussa AG, where he received 10months’ training in all of the company’s variousbusiness units.

On 22 November 1980, with two small suitcases, lots of enthusiasm and an open and eager mind, Uliarrived in Singapore from Frankfurt. He wasimmediately put to work as sales executive in theDegussa metals department.

Headquartered at Supreme House, Jebsen & JessenSingapore was much smaller and less organised than itis today, but according to Uli, the organisation began totransform after the arrival of Mr Helmuth Wicke, thenMD of the Group. Jebsen & Jessen was reorganised, and under the new structure, Uli recognised thatJebsen & Jessen could provide a good long-term careeropportunity. It was an interesting and challenging timefor Uli ... putting his early training to the test while atthe same time getting him involved in the restructuringof the Jebsen & Jessen group.

After receiving a diploma in Management Studiesfrom the Singapore Institute of Management in 1983,Uli was asked to head up the Degussa Departmentand then later the Chemicals Department withinJebsen & Jessen Industrial Services. In 1985 Uli wasoffered and accepted the opportunity to go to HongKong to work for Jebsen & Co. as CommercialManager in the Engineering division. “We handled bothsmall and large projects, the most memorable beingthe baggage handling system extension at Kai TakAirport.”

Three years later, in January 1988, Uli was ready toreturn to South East Asia where Jebsen & Jessen

asked him go to Thailand to take up the post ofGeneral Manager for Jebsen & Jessen Thailand andTriton. Six months later, after the birth of his firstdaughter Sophie, he and his wife Susan left HongKong and moved to Bangkok. By now Uli felt that hewas well equipped to handle this new responsibility.Hamburg and Singapore had given him ampleexperience in the skills and mechanics of the importand export trade, and management courses takenalong the way had provided him with sometheoretical ballast.

“I had dealt with chemical products, as well astechnical products, and had handled complexcontracts in Hong Kong, but soon I became anapprentice again – this time learning all there was toknow about mobile phones. Bangkok was just theplace to sell these. I worked with a wonderful team ofpeople, and in our own way, I felt that we were verysuccessful.”

In 1988 the economy in Thailand had just startedbooming, and Uli found himself in the right place atthe right time. “To be given such a chance ... beingallowed to try things out ... in the handling of thebusiness itself, or in the expansion of facilities likewarehousing or office space ... to be able to takeadvantage of opportunities in a true entrepreneurialway and having the support to do so .... these aresome of the reasons why it is truly fun to workin Jebsen & Jessen.”

When the Group restructured in 1997, Uli wasappointed Regional Managing Director for the newlyestablished Marketing business unit (RBU Marketing),now having to learn how to conduct business withextended responsibilities across the region, based inSingapore. But 1997 was an extremely difficult yeardue to the impact of the Asian currency crisis, andanother round of restructuring and realignment ofJebsen & Jessen’s various businesses began, whicheventually led to Uli’s returning to Thailand where hisclose attention to business development was neededthe most.

Uli describes himself as “the eternal apprentice”.“My apprenticeship with the group continues, and Iremain hopeful, that upon my retirement, I shall havemastered the tasks I have been given over the years, and that in my mind, I shall remain an apprentice, open to learn, to explore and to test the ideas andopportunities that tomorrow morning will bring.”
