ในบรรยากาศของการเ� ดตัวโครงการ Bangkok Art Biennale 2018 ที่จะจัดแสดงในหลายพื้นที่ในกรุงเทพมหานคร ระหว�าง 19 ตุลาคม 2018- 3 กุมภาพันธ� 2019 ภายใต�หัวข�อ Beyond Bliss หรือในภาษาไทย ‘สุขสะพรั่ง พลังอาร�ต’ แนวคิดเรื่องความสุขในอุดมคตินั้นถูกยกขึ้นมาพูดมากมายหลายหน การยกเรื่องความสุขขึ้นมาสร�างบทสนทนาในช�วงเวลาที่โลกทั้งโลกกําลังวุ�นวายด�วย� ญหาใหญ�น�อยไม�แพ�กันในแต�ละมุมของโลก จึงเ� นเรื่องน�าติดตามอย�างยิ�งว�า 75 ศิล� นทั้งจากประเทศไทยและนานาชาติที่มาร�วมแสดงผลงานใน BAB 2018 จะมองความสุขแง�มุมใดบ�าง

Amidst the amazing vibe at the introduction of the Bangkok Art Biennale 2018 project, which will take place in di� erent venues within Bangkok between 19th October 2018 to 3rd February 2019, and presented along with the conceptual framework of Bangkok Art Biennale 2018, under the theme ‘Beyond Bliss’ that prompted the concept of an ideal happiness to be brought up and discussed. To talk about happiness and include it as a part of the dialogue in a time when di� erent parts of the world are going through their own dilemmas makes the Biennale even more interesting as we will get to see 75 artists from Thailand and around the world participating in the BAB 2018 interpret the seemingly unattainable happiness. 

Other happy thoughts from the aspects of the viewers will be brought to the forefront as well. While some people seek happiness from larger things such as peace, democracy and human rights, some are satis� ed by the sound of a bird, a nice meal with loved-ones and good health, the diversity of which prompted us to ask ourselves what is happiness. The answer can be simply a beautiful laughter or someone who always shares countless wonderful stories or someone who never reprimands our imperfections…

Artist-designer whose work encompasses di� erent dis-ciplines of art is known for the large-scale and size of his artis-tic creations that o� en require a space outside of a conven-tional gallery space as well as the utilization of waste materials into works of art. One of his most notable projects is the installation he did for Seoul Olympic Stadium where he cover the architecture’s entire surface with used plastic bottles.

The 71-year-old performance artist is the most in� uential � gure in the realm of Performace art. Communicated through the physicality of human body are the stories of physical and mental limitations. One of her most famous works is Rhythm 0, 1974 where the artist placed 72 objects on the table as the audience was invited to do to her whatever they wished.

This group of artists from the Russian Federation consists of 4 members Tatiana Arzama-sova, Lev Evzovich, Evgeny Svyatsky and Vladimir Fridkes. AES+F works with a diverse range of artistic mediums from photography, video, animation to painting, performance and installation. The veterans of international art festivals world-wide, the group represents Russia for three consecutive years at the Venice Biennale.

ศิล� นคู�หูที่โด�งดังในเรื่องศิลปะอิน-สตอลเลชั่น Michael Elmgreen และ Ingar Dragset เริ�มต�นทํางานในชื่อ Elmgreen & Dragset ใน� 1995 ที่กรุงเบอร�ลิน พวกเขาฝากผลงานไว�กับหลายๆ เทศกาลศิลปะทั่วโลก และผลงานท่ีทําให�เขาโด�งดังท่ีสุดคงจะเ� น Prada Marfa ใน� 2005 ผลงานที่ทั้งคู�สร�างช็อปแบรนด� Prada ไว�กลางทะเลทรายรัฐเท็กซัสเพื่อสะท�อนถึงกระแสทุนนิยมที่เชี่ยวกรากใน� จจุบัน

Elmgreen & Dragset, Denmark and Norway Famed for their ground-breaking installation pieces, the duo artists, Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset begin working under the moni-ker, Elmgreen & Dragset back in 1995 with Berlin being the place where their artistic ca-reer takes o� . With many of their works featured in art fes-tival across the globe, one of the most prominent pieces they have ever done is the 2005’s Prada Marfa where the two artists create a Prada store in the middle of the desert in Texas to re� ect the rising tide of Capitalism.

The Ho Chi Minh City-based group of artists Truong Cong Tung, Thao-Nguyen Phan and the group’s curator and writer, Arlette Quynh-Anh Tran. Their work explores cultural and social issues as well as science and life.

พิเชษฐ กล่ันช่ืน เ� นศิล� นนักเต�นร�วมสมัยท่ีใช�ร�างกายและการเต�น และการส่ือสารในรูปแบบประเพณ�และสากลได�อย�างลงตัว มีผลงานด�านการกํากับการแสดง การออกแบบท�าเต�นและการเต�น และเ� นที่ยอมรับในระดับนานาชาติในหลายประเทศ ต้ังแต�� 2003 เ� นต�นมา พิเชษฐได�เ� ดสถาบันการเต�น Pichet Klunchun Dace Company เพ่ือส�งเสริมและสนับสนุนศิลปะการเต�นร�วมสมัยในไทย

Pichet Klunchun is a contem-porary Thai dance artist who bridges the language of tradi-tional Thai classical dance with a contemporary sensibility. He pursued theatre as both a dancer and a choreographer and earned recognition from do-mestic and international au-diences alike. In 2003, Klunchun founded the contemporary dance institute ‘Pichet Klunchun Dance Company’ with the pur-pose of supporting contem-porary Thai dance careers in Thailand.

The Chinese artist who ignites the avant-garde movement in China from the founding of Xia-men Dada in 1980, Huang Yong Ping moves to France before chosen to represent the country at the latest 48th Venice Biennale. At MOMUMENTA 2016, Huang Yong Ping wows the crowds with ‘Empires’, the installation piece of stacked containers placed in one of Paris’ histori-cal building, Grand Palais.

The art of Sakarin Krue-on sees the presence of traditional esthetics to the elements of Contemporary art. On several occasions, his work questions the presence of ‘Thai identity’ in today’s society. He receives the honorary Silpathorn Award from the Ministry of Culture in 2009 and is recently given the Lifetime Achievement Award from the 3rd Prudential Eye Awards.

It wasn’t long a� er Vatanajyankur graduated from RMIT University, Australia in 2011, that her video art was selected to feature as a part of Thailand Eyes project at Saatchi Gallery in London and Bangkok Art and Culture Centre. In 2017, she was invited to show-case her video art at ‘Island in the Stream’ of the Venice Biennale. Labor and women’s rights are among the issues Vatanajyankur is interested in and use as the materials of her artistic creation.

ศิล� นร�วมสมัยคนสําคัญของออสเตรเลีย Fiona Margaret Hall เริ�มต�นชีวิตศิล� นจากการเ� นศิล� นภาพถ�าย ก�อนจะขยายขอบเขตการทํางานศิลปะมาสู�ส่ืออ่ืนๆ อย�างเช�น เพ�นท�ติ�ง ประติมากรรม และงานอินสตอลเลช่ัน โดยเฉพาะการหยิบวัตถุในชีวิตประจําวันมาทํางานศิลปะเพ่ือพูดถึงประเด็นทางสังคม การเมือง การล�าอาณานิคม ไปจนถึงประวัติศาสตร�

One of Australia’s most important Contemporary artists, Fiona Margaret Hall began her artistic career as a photographer before expanding her artistic realm to other mediums such as painting, sculpture and installation. The use of everyday objects in her artistic creations discuss both political and social issues including colonialism and other historical moments.

Having graduated in painting from the University of the Philip-pines in 1982, Justiniani took part in the artists’ political move-ment in the Philippines between 1980 and 1990. He was honored by the Cultural Center of the Philippines as one of the 13 artists who was granted the Thirteen Artists Award in 1994. Justiniani has also represented Filipino artists at several inter-national talks and workshops. His recent works explore the lives of common folks in the society that are full of con� ict, deceit and insecurity.

Sara Favriau Graduated from Paris’ École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Sara Favriau is a French artist with unique ap-proach to art. Working primarily with wood, Favriau uitilizes tradi-tional techniques for the deve-lopment of her contemporary artistic creation. In 2015, her installation was shown at Palais de Tokyo 2014 and chosen as the winner of Prix Découverte des Amis du Palais de Tokyo.

Many remember her from the polka dot graphics customary to her art that ranges from paintings and sculptures to � lms. What’s interesting is that Kusama’s background in art education began with the study of traditional Japanese art at Kyoto School of Arts and Cra� s before her work became in-� uenced by Abstract Expres-sionism, the artistic movement that emerged in post-war Amer-ica in 1958. Kusama moved to New York where she works and became a prominent � gure in the Pop Art scene.

This Italian contemporary artist has lived and worked in dif-ferent places around the world from Italy and New York to India (which is one of the reasons why his works contain elements akin to India’s local arts). Clemente works across several artistic mediums including painting and sculpture. He was also one of the most important � gures in the Transavanguardia move-ment during the 1980s where a group of Italian artists returned to explore the realm of � gura-tive art and symbolism.

With the city of Chiang Mai being the place where he both lives and works, Puntusawasdi’s sculptural creations are an ex-pression of advanced techniques and precision, calling upon an eclectic use of materials from wood, stones and � ber to many di� erent kinds of metals. Through intriguing sculptural forms, his works communicate and ques-tion viewers about the ego and impermanence. Puntusawasdi is also one of the protégés of the late legendary Thai contem-porary artist, Montien Boonma.

One of the pioneers of con-temporary art in Thailand, Phaosawasdi works particularly with installation art and video installations that have been featured in exhibitions across Asia and Australia as well as Europe and the United States. While continuing to work on his artistic creations, Phaosawasdi is currently a tenured professor in the Department of Visual Arts, the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts of Chulalongkorn University.

With a bachelor’s degree from the Faculty of Arts of Silpakorn University and a Master of Visual Arts from Sydney College of the Arts, Suwannakudt has had a great number of both solo and group exhibitions in Sydney, Melbourne and Bangkok. She is a contemporary artist who takes a distinctive approach toward traditional art and ex-plores his ability to interestingly interpret contemporary issues through conventional mediums such as painting.

Ralf Tooten is an experienced architecture and portrait photo-grapher who becoming more widely known through the pub-lishing project ‘Eyes of Wisdom,’ a series depicting portraits of religious leaders that received the Hasselblad Masters Award in 2012. He moved to Bangkok in 2003 and continued his ca-reer through activities such as Bangkok Noir, 2009 and R.C.A (2013), a series of gigantic por-traits in Ratchaburi.

This group of young generation artists from southern Thailand is comprised of Keeta Isran, Nuratna Hawae, Kuso� yah Nibuesa, Heedayah Mahavi and Arichama Pahkapet.  With a recent exhibition being held at the People’s Gallery of the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre last year, their work revolves around the Islamic way of life, con� icts and hopes in the three southernmost provinces of Thailand.

1 What does the word Biennale mean?

It’s the Italian word for ‘every two years.’ Biennale is a word frequently used with art festivals that happen biennially. The Venice Biennale has been held for more than 100 years with the � rst one taking place in 1895. ‘Biennial’ can also be used to refer to the same meaning with /bΛI˙ЄnI / being the pronunciation.  2 What are other art festivals of similar names that are about to take place in Thailand? Thailand Biennale 2018, Krabi  2nd November 2018 - 28th February 2019This international art festival is being held by The O� ce of Contemporary Art and Culture, Ministry of Culture, Thailand and has selected Krabi, a southern province of Thailand, as its inaugural stage. 3 What does ‘Beyond Bliss’ mean and what is it all about? ‘Beyond Bliss’ is the theme of the Bangkok Art Biennale 2018, which will happen during the latter part of 2018, right in the capital city of Thailand. It presents itself through a key question that the Bangkok Art Biennale asks the partici-pating artists, ‘What is your happiness?’ following which they transform their interpretations into works of art. 

It is this open-ended question that invites everyone to contemplate their notion of happiness and the way they � nd happiness, posing inquiry as to what the ultimate happiness is and if there is any happiness that they wish to attain but haven’t. 4 What type of activities can one expect to see from Bangkok Art Biennale 2018? For the � rst time in history, Thailand will be hosting the world’s most prestigious and renowned art festival that everyone in the art industry desires to be a part of. If we were to name the greatest and most long-standing art festival in the world, the Venice Biennale, the biannual event held at Italy’s famous canal city has been a dream that artists from around the world want to participate in and tourists and art bu� s world-wide wish to experience and take part in. The Venice Biennale has continued its history for over 120 years, acting as one of the most glori� ed art and cultural institutes in the world. Conceived in 1895, it is considered the world’s � rst international art festival. Under the Venice Biennale’s umbrella, the institution extends its platform to encompass Architecture, Cinema, Dance, Music, Theatre, and Historical Archives of Contemporary Arts. 2018 is the year that the iconic art festival will put Bangkok on the map of the global art industry as the city will host its very � rst Bang-kok Art Biennale, a biannual art festival that will take over an amazing array of cultural spaces. The event’s designated sites range from Wat Phra Chetuphon Vimolmangklararm Rajwaramahaviharn or the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, Wat Arun Ratchawararam Ratchawaramahaviharn (The Temple fo Dawn) and Wat Prayurawongsawas Waraviharn (Temple of Iron Fence), as well as the heritage building of the East Asiatic Company, Bank of Thailand Learning Center (BOT), Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, Lumpini Park and several other notable cultural venues in the city. The event will showcase works of leading artists from around the world, while o� ering a chance for contemporary Thai artists to participate and exhibit their talents to both Thai and international viewers throughout the event’s three-and-a-half month period (19th October 2018 – 3rd February 2019). The growing recognition of cities and coun-tries across the globe in art has propelled international art festivals to blossom in Europe, the United States, Australia, and Asia, in cities such as Moscow, Paris, Shanghai, Gwangju, Liverpool, Singapore, New Delhi, Jakarta and Yokohama, Sydney. From the statistics documented by the Biennial Foundation, there are currently more than 300 art festivals being held around the world with duration frequency and scale varying in di� erent cities from biennales and triennales to quinquennales. The Bangkok Art Biennale has Prof.Dr. Apinan Poshyananda, the former Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Culture and the veteran who has been an active contributor and observer of Thailand’s Contemporary art scene for over 30 years, as its Artistic Director Prof.Dr. Poshyananda will be working with an inter-national team of advisors and the leading curators of the Thai curatorial team to over-see the event’s big picture including the selection of artists who will be participating in the Biennale. With ‘Beyond Bliss’ as the theme, artists will create works that bear interesting relation-ships with the sites where they are housed.

ภายใต�แนวคิด ‘Beyond Bliss’ (สุขสะพรั่ง พลังอาร�ต) ศิลปนจะสร�างสรรค�งานที่สัมพันธ�กับพื้นที่ ตีความ และบันทึกความหลากหลายทางวัฒนธรรม โดยจะสะท�อนผ�านผลงานในรปูแบบศลิปะนานาชนดิ มีเนือ้หาเกีย่วกับความปรารถนาความสุขทางกายและจติใจ การแสวงหาวิธีกาํจดัทกุข� การได�รบัแรงบนัดาลใจจากสถานทีศ่กัด์ิสิทธิ์ รวมทัง้การแสดงข�อคดิเห็นเกีย่วกบัการหาความสุข อนัเนือ่งมาจากสังคมการเมือง และสภาวะจากการทาํลายธรรมชาติ

They are expected to interpret and document the diversity of culture through di� erent artistic disciplines using di� erent artistic mediums. The stories they will tell will revolve around physical and mental desires, ways to eliminate su� ering and pain, being inspired by the spiritual places as well as their personal expressions about a search for happiness as a result of social and political conditions including the impacts of environmental degradation. The theme challenges both artists and viewers to achieve their own interpretations of the universal language spoken through the physical presence of art. They will be contemplating the unattainable happiness and the ubiquitous con-nection of Buddhist culture in the lives of Thai people. In Buddhism, happiness is about the impermanence of things, and the way all things go through the process of rising, standing and cessation. To be able to break away from a problem, even for a temporary period of time, can be considered a type of happiness. The � rst Bangkok Art Biennale is conceived from the collaboration and support of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, The Ministry of Tourism and Sports, Tourism Authority of Thailand, Thai Beverage Public Company Limited and several other allies. Meet renowned international and Thai artists and experience an eclectic array of artistic creations from 19th October 2018 to 3rd February 2019 right here in the city of Bangkok.

gardens) was chosen as the site with countries in the European continent invited to build their own pavilions where the works of their artists would be exhibited. The second Venice Biennale took place in 1897, the same year when King Rama V visited Europe for the � rst time and he actually paid a visit to the Biennale as well. The visit was documented as well as the story about the Siamese King buying some of the works of art exhibited at the biennale. 10 years later in 1907, King Rama V’s second visit to Europe is evidence of his interest in the festival. It was the period when Thailand, or Siam at the time, was going through a great deal of changes as a result of the country’s modernization and this sort of taste -making pro-cess. This is the part where art got involved. He would visit art ex-hibitions and purchase some of the works and have them shipped back home; it was all a part of an attempt to show that the people of Siam were culturally civilized. At the very same time, King Rama VI who was the appointed Crowned Prince, was studying in Europe and he joined King Rama V’s visits at di� erent art exhibitions. The participation led to the idea of Siam taking part in the event. Later, under the reign of King Rama VI, in 1911, the Turin International hap-pened with Siam’s participation and construction of the Siamese Pavilion. The structure had Italian architects Carlo Allegri and Mario

ทางด�านศิลปะเยอะแต�ไม�มีโอกาสแสดงบนเวทีนานาชาติมากนัก เราก็เลยมองว�าถ�าในบ�านเรามีเวทีนานาชาติขึ้นมา ก็จะเ� นอะไรที่เ� ดโอกาสให�ศิล� นไทยได�แสดงงานมากขึ้น จริงๆ แล�วการจัดงานลักษณะน� ้ก็ไม�ได�หมายความว�า Bangkok Art Biennale จะเ� นผู�จัดแต�ผู�เดียว แต�โครงการที่มีลักษณะใกล�เคียงหรือว�าเ� นเน็ตเวิร�ค หรือระบบแกลเลอร่ี หรือกิจกรรมต�างๆ ท่ีเก่ียวกับดีไซน� แฟช่ัน ภาพยนตร� งานสร�างสรรค�ต�างๆ ก็สามารถเกิดขึ้นมาในเวลาเดียวกันได� ซึ่งจะทําให�ทั้งเมืองเต็มไปด�วย

AP: คือมีการพยายามใช�หลายระเบียบวิธีในการคัดเลือกนะครับ เรามีทีม 2 ทีมหลัก ทีมแรกเ� นทีมที่ปรึกษาจากนานา-ชาติซึ่งมาจากสถาบัน อย�างเช�น Saatchi Gallery, Guggenheim Museum, Mori Art Museum อีกทีมก็คือทีมภัณฑารักษ� ประกอบไปด�วยภัณฑารักษ� 5 คน ด�วยกัน คือจากไทย 3 บวกกับคิวเรเตอร�จากสิงคโปร�และ� ลิป� นส� อีกวิธีการหนึ่งที่เราใช�คือการเ� ด open call อันน�้เ� นสิ�งหนึ่งที่ผมคิดว�าเ� นการเ� ดโอกาสให�คนข�างนอกทั่วไปได�ส�งใบสมัคร แล�วก็ตีโจทย�ของคําว�า ‘Beyond Bliss’ ด�วยตัวเอง ปกติเบียนนาเล�อ่ืนๆ บางทีเขาไม�เ� ด open call เขาเลือกกันเองทั้งหมด นอกจากนั้นเราก็ยังมีกระบวนการเชิญศิล� น เราประชุมกันหลายครั้งมาก ค�อยๆ คัดเลือกจาก300 คน มา 200 คน เพราะฉะนั้นตรงน�้เน��ยเราก็มาถึงจุดที่ว�าเราได�ครบแล�วล�ะ 75 คน นะครับ แล�วเราก็เตรียมประกาศรายช่ือน�ท่ี้การเ� ดตัวอย�างเ� นทางการที่ Art Basel ที่ฮ�องกง พูดอีกแบบก็คือเราพยายามสร�างสมดุลบางอย�าง เราอยากจะมีคละกันระหว�างศิล� นระดับโลกกับศิล� นที่อยู�ในวัยแจ�งเกิด ใน 75 คนเน��ย เกือบครึ่งเลยก็จะเ� นศิล� นไทย นอกจากนั้นเรายังพยายามมีตัวแทนจาก 4 ภูมิภาค ของไทยด�วย

AP: Yayoi Kusama พูด� บทุกคนก็ต่ืนเต�น เรียกว�าศิล� นอาวุโสที่มีผลงานโด�งดัง โดยเฉพาะช�วง� ท่ีผ�านมาเธอได�เ� ดพิพิธ-ภัณฑ�ส�วนตัวที่โตเกียว แล�วก็มีการแสดงในประเทศออสเตรเลีย ที่อเมริกา แล�วก็ที่สิงคโปร� แม�แต�ที่สิงคโปร�เน��ยคนไทยก็

Tamagno overseeing the design and construction. The pavilion was built in Siam before it was trans-ported to Turin to be reassembled. Brought along with the pavilion were local cra� products, which were exhibited in the pavilion. A� er the exposition was over, King Rama VI wished to have this type of exposition held in Bangkok. He then granted the land known as Sala Daeng � eld (a part of that expansive land became today’s Lumpini Park) to be used as the site where the exposition would be held. The plan was made and every-thing was being prepared when the First World War struck, causing the project to be terminated. BAB MAG: The exposition almost happened in Siam.

AP: Yes. It was one of the reasons why Wireless Road is occupied by embassies. Art and culture, inter-national relations, these things have their own roots and history. Wireless Road was highly signi� -cant to the development of urban Bangkok and the fact that one of the sites of Bangkok Art Bien-nale 2018 is Lumpini Park is very much the retracing of history, and making of the event that didn’t happen really happen today. BAB MAG: What is the main purpose of Bangkok Art Bien-nale 2018?

AP: Thailand has always attempted to organize this type of festival. We see Bangkok as a suitable place for something like this to happen because it has its own cultural heritage and a growing number of visitors. The city’s unique

charm has always attracted tra-velers from around the world and this capital city has always been called the ‘Venice of the East.’ We also have a signi� cant number of human resources in the art com-munity but we haven’t had that many platforms for them to show-case their talents. If we were able to organize a platform of this scale and recognition, it would allow for Thai artists to introduce their works to the international audience. There have been other festivals of this nature. It isn’t that Bangkok Art Biennale is the only festival out there. There are other similar projects and networks including the gallery system and activities related to design, fashion, � lm and other creative disciplines that are taking place within this time period. Collectively, these events will make the city to be full of… BAB MAG: Creativity AP: Rich with creativity. BAB MAG: Will Bangkok Art Biennale 2018 be di� erent from other biennales that have been hosted in other cities?

AP: Well, yes. Each country tries to � nd its own DNA; that unique identity. As for Bangkok, it’s a long-standing capital city � lled with spectacular architectural creations, art and culture. Tra-velers are aware of what Bangkok has to o� er so with this biennale, we think we can create some-thing new and di� erent. What’s the appeal? You ask. The idea is if we were able to bring art works and exhibitions into the spaces of these renowned temples, we

ment of the list of artists who will be participating in Bangkok Art Bien-nale 2018 at Art Basel in Hong Kong. In a way, we are trying to create some sort of balance. We want it to be a mix of world -class artists and the artists who are still in the early parts of their careers. Almost half of the 75 artists are Thai artists and we tried to have representa-tives from the 4 regions of Thai-land as well. BAB MAG : Of all the 75 artists, could you give us a couple of names or groups?

AP: Yayoi Kusama is one of the names that has excited everyone. She’s one of the most famous and legendary artists of our time, especially last year when she opened her own museum in Tokyo with her traveling retrospective exhibition welcoming ground-breaking receptions in Australia, the United States and Singapore. Thai people actually � ew to Singa-pore to see her works. Her art is very visual and it seems easy to digest but it contains this tre-mendous pressure, and the use of art as a process of mental therapy. We will also be welcoming Marina Abramovic̀ , the globally renowned performance artist. She will be at the biennale with a collection of her works and will be speaking at one of the lectures. Her Marina Abramovic̀ Institute (MAI) will be selecting performance artists to join her performance at the Bang-kok Art Biennale 2018 as well. It will be something that the other bien-nales have never seen because the festival will be held over an extended period. These are some of the attractions of Bangkok Art Biennale 2018. Then we will also have Yoshitomo Nara, who spoke at a lecture on the 6th of March 2018. He’s the artist who has always had this close connection with Thailand’s art community. He’s very well known among the Thai audience, that’s for sure. The fact that these proli� c artists decided to join the event isn’t something that is easy to come by because they don’t have to be here. They’re world-class artists and they don’t have to waste their time coming

It seems like a theme that is easy to interpret but it’s open enough for both viewers and artists to navigate through their own process of interpretation

would want both the viewers and artists to take part in the creative process and the outcome would be very interesting. BAB MAG: Could you tell us a bit about the theme ‘Beyond Bliss’ and how it came about, and what do you expect to see from the artists’ interpretations of the theme? AP: Bliss is like this feeling of ful� llment and great happiness while the word beyond is like the challenge of getting to that moment of happiness. It could be unattainable as well. Super� -cially, it seems like a theme that is easy to interpret but it’s open enough for both viewers and artists to navigate through their own process of interpretation. Bliss is happiness, but what the theme really asks is what every-one is searching for, what is their de� nition of heaven and how ‘beyond’ do they want to go? These ideas and questions have been contemplated and asked by people from all religions. It’s a simple question of ‘how can we � nd happiness?.’ And happiness doesn’t last. It’s like a sorrow, the made-up thoughts and physicality. If you’re happy, how long can you stay happy, and if you can attain that feeling of happiness, it equals the period of su� ering you are able to overcome. Happiness and su� ering are like this binary opposition that you really can’t separate. BAB MAG: What was the selec-tion process like in terms of the 75 artists who were chosen to participate in the Biennale, do they represent certain groups or movements, could you give an example?

AP: There were di� erent criteria we incorporated into the selec-tion process. We have two main teams of juries. The � rst is the inter-national team of consultants from global institutions like Saatchi Gallery, the Guggenheim Mu-seum, Mori Art Museum while the other is the curatorial team, which consists of 5 curators, 3 from Thai-land, one each from Singapore and the Philippines. Another me-thod we used was hosting an open call, which I think gave the general public the opportunity to apply and show us their own inter-pretation of the theme ‘Beyond Bliss.’ Normally, other biennales don’t have open calls and all of the selection process is done by the designated team of curators or experts. We also have this pro-cess of inviting artists where a� er numerous meetings, we selected 300 artists and the number then dwindled down to 200 and � nally to the � nal 75 artists. We are now preparing for the o� cial announce-

the channel of the Chao Praya River. We want the work here to be a site-speci� c piece because the building’s history is related to the Thailand - European relations, especially between Denmark and Siam. We will have Thai artists create a � lm about expeditions and the important role of water, the architectural landscape of Copenhagen and Bangkok. We think a site speci� c project is something that will really be the product of this intercultural relationship. Then we have One Bangkok where Bangkok Art Biennale Building will be con-structed.

BAB MAG: How should Thai people prepare for the coming of Bangkok Art Biennale?

AP: I think we’re very lucky to be anticipating something that will bring great fun, new enjoyable experiences and bodies of know-ledge. The event will give birth to a new community of creative citizens. There will be artworks exhibited in public spaces and venues that we have never been given access to, in temples, com-mercial districts, shopping malls, the Bank of Thailand. The works will be scattered across di� erent places so you might have to stay � t to visit all the 19 sites. We want the city and the people to be subsumed by the presence of art. There are four full months to experience this great event, so we think everyone will be able to manage their time.

BAB MAG: Could you be a representative of Thailand and invite people from around the world to come see Bangkok Art Biennale 2018?

AP: Absolutely. Everyone, whether you’re Thai, foreigners who will be traveling to Thailand or are currently living in Thailand, this is a great chance to experience and explore the world of art, de-sign and creativity, to see many incredible dimensions of art from performance, � lm or even some interesting creations of experimen-tal art. Come see the amazing works of these talented interna-tional and Thai artists and de-signers. As for the Thai people, let’s together be the gracious host and welcome visitors with an open heart and arms. Hopefully, Bang-kok Art Biennale 2018 will open people’s perspectives and allow them to freely search for answers that will help them � nd true hap-piness. I think it is a notion that even people who are not really interested in art or design can really relate themselves to. The biennale will o� er the kind of artistic experience that everyone can enjoy.

AP: ครับ ก็อยากจะถือโอกาสน�้เชิญชวนคนไทย คนต�างประเทศ แล�วก็คนต�าง-ประเทศที่อยู�ในไทยที่สนใจในเรื่องของศิลปะ การออกแบบ ความคิดสร�างสรรค� การแสดงในหลากหลายมิติ รวมถึงเรื่องของภาพยนตร� และศิลปะทดลอง อยากจะให�ทุกท�านได�มีโอกาสมาสัมผัสงานศิลปะ กับความภาคภูมิใจของศิล� นไทย นักออกแบบไทย เราถือว�าเ� นเจ�าภาพร�วมกันในการที่จะต�อนรับผู�มาเยือน แล�วก็เราก็หวังว�าการมาดูงาน Bangkok Art Biennale 2018 จะได�ประเทือง� ญญา ทําให�สติ� ญญาคมชัดข้ึน แล�วก็ได�คําตอบว�าจริงๆ แล�วการแสวงหาความสุขที่เราทําอยู�ทุกวัน เราจะทําอย�างไรที่จะให�ความสุขนั้นยั่งยืน อันน�้ผมคิดว�าเ� นโจทย�ที่คนที่ไม�สนใจศิลปะก็มาดูได�ครับ

here, but they’re here. From Thai-land we have Sakarin Krue-on and Kawita Vatanajyankur, the female artist who uses video art to discuss issues like the female body including the toleration and status of women or the stereo-typical perception towards what women should do, all the way to manual labor and workers in terms of aspects that are related to gen-der. There are many interesting issues that her work has raised and discusses. We also have the Muslimah, a group of female artists from Pattani, Narathiwat, and Songkhla province of Southern Thailand, who use art to tell stories of their lives back home. Their works also talk about hope; the hope for the happiness within the con-text of the marginalized people and the way they view the world. Laos-Thai Sang Sinxay is another collaborative group of artists who is doing some interesting works, which is an interesting example of progress considering the fact that Laotian artists haven’t really had that many platforms to show-case their talents. The Isan region of Thailand and Laos share this background belief about the legends of Sang Sinxay, which is a Lao epic poem that tells the story of the hero, Sinxay, and his quests. We saw this collaborative project they’re doing with the mural paintings and thought that it was a great opportunity for artists from the Isan region and Laos to work together. They will be our new mural painting heroes.

BAB MAG: Could you reveal some of the key locations apart from the temples you mentioned earlier?

AP: The Bank of Thailand Learning Center is one of the very exciting venues for the event. The reason I’m saying this is because as an institution, the Bank of Thailand has a long history as a supporter of Thailand’s art community and the Learning Center is located in this amazing space that has been forgotten for such a long period of time. We also have the East Asiatic Company, which houses this beautiful century-old building located on a curve in

Wisut Ponnimit, or Tum Wisut is the Thai cartoon artist who made a name for himself in Japan forhis adorable looking character, ‘Mamuang’ andlater became more recognized by the Thai audience. But before a little girl like Mamuang found her way into the hearts of the people in both countries (and more), Ponnimit’s journey was � lled with both obstacles and happiness. Throughout his life, he tried, failed and suc-ceeded in many creative disciplines. Before hisdays at the Faculty of Decorative Arts of Silpa-korn University, he intended to pursue his bach-elor degree studies at the Faculty of Education, Chulalongkorn University but didn’t get accepted.Silpakorn University’s Faculty of Painting, Sculp-ture and Graphic Arts was another goal for him, but the hope of passing the entrance exam andgetting to study there didn’t go as planned. His student years at the Faculty of Decorative Arts didn’t go so well either, and he ended taking � ve and a half years in order to graduate. The important turning point in his life came when‘hesheit,’ a manga with uniquely simple drawingand strange yet straightforward content was published in Katch magazine at the end of the 90s. Two years a� er having his work published

หลังจากรวบรวมข�อมูลมาจากหลายๆ บทสัมภาษณ�ที่ผ�านมาของวิศุทธ์ิ เราพอจะสรุปสาเหตุของปราก การณ�ท่ีว�าออกได�เ� นสองสาเหตุใหญ�ๆ คือ หนึ่ง เพราะมะม�วงตัวเล็ก ( ) บทบาทของมะม�วงเริ�มขึ้นตอนที่มีนิตยสารหลายๆ หัวมาขอให�วิศุทธ์ิวาดการ�ตูนแทรกลงในช�องเล็กๆ ของเล�ม ด�วยความท่ีมะม�วงตัวเล็กและวาดง�ายกว�าใครเพ่ือน ทําให�เขาเลือกใช�มะม�วงเ� นตัวละครหลักในการ�ตูนช�องเล็กๆ (ประมาณ 5x5 เซนติ-เมตร) และด�วยเหตุผลง�ายๆ ที่ว�ามาน�้ก็ทําให�มะม�วงปรากตัวไปแทบจะทุกที่และเริ�มเ� นที่จดจําในหมู�นักอ�านกลุ�มหนึ่งในญี่ปุ�น อีกสาเหตุคอื “ความเรียบง�าย” ในขณะท่ีมังงะญ่ีปุ�นยุค� จจุบันเดินทางมาถึงจุดที่มังงะกลายเ� นอุตสาหกรรม การ�ตูนหนึ่งเล�มเกิดขึ้นด�วยทีมผู�วาด และผู�ช�วยเ� นสิบๆ คน การ�ตูนของวิศุทธิ์กลับไม�มีความเ� นธุรกิจแบบนั้นเลยแม�แต�น�อย วิศุทธิ์เคยบอกในบทสัมภาษณ�บทหนึ่งว�า “คนอ�านท่ีน่ันบอกว�า การ�ตูนเราเหมือนการ�ตูนโบราณ เหมือนกับการ�ตูนยุคก�อนของเขา ไม�มีความเ� นธุรกิจ แต�ตอนน�้ไม�ใช� วาดการ�ตูนต�องอลังการ มีผู�ช�วย ไม�มีผู�ช�วยทําไม�ได�” ความง�ายของเส�นสายเรียบๆ สบายตายังทําให�มะม�วงโดดเด�นออกมาจากหน�านิตยสารที่เต็มไปด�วยตัวหนังสือ และภาพละเอียดยิบ ประกอบกับเน�้อหาของเรื่องที่ตรงๆ ไม�ซีเรียสซับซ�อน ก็ทําให�มะม�วงกลายมาเ� นการ�ตูนภาษาใหม�ท่ีอ�านง�าย น�ารัก และน�าติดตาม

“ที่มะม�วงชื่อมะม�วงก็เพราะทรงผมมะม�วงเหมือนมะม�วง”ความตรงไปตรงมาน�้เข�ากันกับธีมของ Bangkok Art Bien-nale 2018 ท่ีว�า ‘สุขสะพร่ัง พลังอาร�ต’ ได�ลงตัวพอดิบพอดี การเสพศิลปะอาจจะไม�จําเ� นต�องลึกล้ําซีเรียสไปเสียตลอดเวลา ยิ�งไปกว�านั้นน�องมะม�วงก็กําลังจะมาเ� น BAB AMBASSADOR ให�ด�วย ในอีกหลายๆ เดือนต�อจากน�้เราจะได�เห็นแอนิเมชั่นมะม�วงปราก อยู�บนจอใหญ�ๆ ทั่วกรุงเทพฯ นอกจากน้ันเรายังจะเจอน�องมะม�วงในร�าง signage ทําหน�าที่เชิญชวนคนกรุง มาเยี่ยมชมงาน Bangkok Art Biennale 2018 ที่กําลังจะเกิดขึ้นในระหว�าง 19 ตุลาคม 2018 - 3 กุมภาพันธ� 2019 ที่จะถึงน�้อีกด�วย

in the magazine, he was asked to be one of the regular contributors of a day magazine. When Ponnimit spent time in Japan to study the language, ‘everybodyeverything’ was created and ‘Mamuang,’ one of the characters in the series sent him o� to fame. As a testament to its popularity, a corner of Tsutaya bookstore in Ginza was dedicated entirely to ‘Mamuang.’ The factors and reasons behind Mamuang’s incredible popularity in Japan are worth con-templating for it’s never been easy for a cartoon artist to create a character that can attain this level of success in the country known as the Mecca of manga. A� er putting together information from many di� erent sources, including Ponninit’s past inter-views, the phenomenon can be summed up by two main factors. The � rst is because Mamuang is so tiny. The role of Mamuang � rst began when a number of magazines were asking Ponnimit to create a cartoon for a small space in each issue. With Mamuang’s small size and the fact that it’s the easiest character to draw, the artist decided that she would be the perfect choice for the publications’ 5x5 centimeter spaces. As simple as it sounds, this is the reason behind Mamuang’s ubiquitous presence in di� erent publications as the character gained more recognition from a group of Japanese readers. Another reason is the ‘simplicity’ of Mamuang that found its way to readers in a time whenJapanese manga was becoming highly indus-trialized. It was the scenario where a manga was being created by a team of tens of authors and assistants. Ponnimit’s cartoon, on the other hand, didn’t possess such industrial process. “The Japanese readers say that my work reminded them of the old-school manga; the kind of manga that they used to read when they were kids. It didn’t involve the business aspect to the artistic process, which made it di� erent from other manga where a creation of a manga came with the need for many spectacular techniques that required a manga artist to have assistants to help complete the work that would otherwise be impossible to do,” said Ponnimit in an interview. The simplistic drawing is comforting to look at and it brings Mamuang out from a page full of text and incre-dibly detailed images. Such physical elements are complemented by a straightforward and easy-to-digest story, which together turns the character into a new, simplistic, intelligible and interesting manga language that makes the readers love and want to follow her. “Mamuang is named Mamuang (the Thai word for mango) because she has this mango-shaped hair.” Such straightforward quality perfectly resonates with Bangkok Art Biennale 2018’s theme ‘Beyond Bliss,’ which is basically the idea of one being able to enjoy an artistic experience withoutthe need to be serious and insightful all the time. With Mamuang chosen as the BAB AMBASSADOR,several months from now, we will get to see Mamuang’s animation on di� erent major digital screens across Bangkok not to mention her appearance in the form of signage inviting people to see Bangkok Art Biennale 2018, which will take place from 19th October, 2018 to 3rd February, 2019 right here in the vibrant capital city of Thailand.
