Student teaching is your Capstone Project that allows you, after successfully completing the semester, to apply for your Teaching License.

It is considered to be the most important and challenging component of teacher preparation programs.

It is a sixteen week “Professional Internship.”

Student Teaching

The objective of student teaching is to provide experiences where students seeking licensure can effectively demonstrate skills in each of the following areas:

• Planning and Preparation• Navigating the Classroom and School Environment• Instruction (engaging students in meaningful inst.)• Assessment (Formative and Summative)• Professional Responsibilities• Behavior Management• Professional Dispositions

Student Teaching

Your student teaching experience requires a large time commitment from you.Full Time Internship. Monday through Friday. 7-8 hours at the school during the day. Evening and weekends will be spent planning and preparing for future instruction.

Begin to think about how you will manage all your responsibilities and commitments.

Student teaching is a 16 week interview and can be a gateway to a job opportunity.

TPA RequirementThe state of Ohio has mandated that beginning Fall 2013, all Pre-service teachers must complete a TPA (Teacher Performance Assessment) during your student teaching experience.

Required as part of your Student Teaching course. If you do not complete and upload final TPA portfolio you will fail the course.

Cost to you as a student is $300.00

What is edTPA?

edTPA is a pre-service electronic portfolio designed by educators to answer the essential question: "Is a new teacher ready for the job?" It tests application of skills.edTPA is a summative assessment of the teaching practice that is in alignment of the Ohio teaching standards.It is a collection of artifacts and commentaries.It is based on a learning segment of 3-5 days.Assessed by the State of Ohio using 15 rubrics.

Preservice through Lead Teaching

To be eligible to student teach you must meet the following requirements:

Student Teaching Requirements

1. Be admitted to the College of Education.2. Completion of all program requirements.3. Have a cumulative grade point average of a 2.5 or above.4. Have a cumulative grade point average of a 2.5 or above in your content area(s).5. In your professional education coursework you cannot have a grade below a C. Any professional educational coursework with a C- or below must be retaken.6. Passing scores on all of your content areas for the Ohio Assessment for Educators (OAE). OPI for foreign language students.7. Passing OAE Content or OPI scores turned in to the Office of Student Teaching by the required deadline.8. Clean FBI and BCI report.9. Submission of completed student teaching application by required deadline.10. Approval from the Student Teaching committee. 

Ohio Assessment for Educators and OPI

A hard copy of your passing scores are required to be turned in to the Office of Student Teaching

by November 20, 2015

If you do not pass and have your scores in by the required date, you may appeal to the Student

Teaching Committee.

Appeals must be turned into Wendy Jewell by December 4, 2015. The appeals process will be

posted on the Student Teaching web site.

There is a thirty day wait time before you can repeat the test.

There is significant wait time before you receive your official scores.

Contact Dr. Wilbanks in Student Services if you are not sure which test to take.

If you have more than one content area, you must pass both content areas to meet the student teaching pre-requisite.

You will need to have passing scores on both the OAE Content test and OAE APK in order to apply for your teaching license.

Important information regarding the OAE

Placements will be within fifty miles of the University of Akron.

Teacher Candidates will be placed in school districts that we have partnerships with, but we are not limited to those specific districts if needed. Your Student Teaching experience will follow the Co-Teaching Model. (In most cases)

Student Teaching Placement Process

We consider the following when seeking a placement for you:

Candidates may not make their own placements. Candidates may not student teach in the school district that you attended.* Candidates may not student teach in districts

where a relative works or where relatives attend.*You cannot Student Teach in a district in which you are

employed. Most districts require you to interview with them

prior to them accepting you as a student teacher.

Current District Partners

Two step process. Go to the Student Teaching web site. Complete the on-line application and then print, sign and turn in hard copy.

The on-line application will take at least 30 minutes to complete.

Collect all the required information before you begin filling in the application.

Once you start the application, you cannot stop and save.

If you do not complete the application and submit, you will need to start the application over again.

The electronic application will be available in August.

Select Licensure area with specific content area if applicable.

Ex. Middle Level – SS and LA AYA – Science

Which school districts did you attend in Ohio? Which school district did you graduate from and

what year did you graduate? Do you have relatives affiliated in any Ohio school

districts? Mother/Father Sister/Brother Husband/Wife/Domestic Partner Your own children

If you do have relatives affiliated in Ohio school districts, please list the SCHOOL DISTRICT and RELATIONSHIP to you for each relative:

FIELD EXPERIENCE:

Please enter each of your prior field experiences on a separate line.  Include the field experience LOCATION, SUBJECT, GRADE LEVEL, and TYPE (Urban, Suburban, Rural, Other).

Example:1 Barberton High School, Language Arts, 10th Grade, Other2 Buchtel High School, Mathematics, 9th Grade, Urban

Preplan what you will list under the following sections of the application: .

Type these into a word document so you can copy and paste the responses into the application

List of places where you did your field work List of Travel, Leadership, Honors, etc. List of Accomplishments

Preparing to Complete the Application

When you have done all your preparation work, go to the Student Teaching website and click on “Apply to Student Teach”

Fill out all required information. Push “Submit.”A copy of the application will be sent to your UA email address.Print out completed application which includes a line for your signature.Turn in a signed hard copy of student teaching application and required documentation to the Office of Student Teaching in Central Hower 303 by required deadline.

Bring to Central Hower 303 by your deadline date:Signed copy of the applicationCopy of your DARS (print needs to be large enough to read)Advisor/Student Sign Off for Student Teaching Form – Completed.If you have already received passing OAE or OPI scores, please turn in a copy.

Required Documentation:

You will follow district/building calendar, hours of operation, and all district procedures and policies.

Follow professional guidelines in alignment with the Ohio Teaching Standards, the district policies and the University of Akron’s code of student conduct.

If you have added a misdemeanor or a felony since you turned in your cleared BCI and FBI to the district, you must report it to the Director of Student Teaching at the University. Not reporting it or the nature of the offence can result in immediate removal from your placement.

If you voluntarily start your placement early, you will end your placement as scheduled by the end of the semester.

If you are offered employment by a district during your student teaching, you will still end your placement as scheduled at the end of the semester.

You cannot be hired as a sub for a district and Student Teach.

If you are removed from a placement, you are not guaranteed another placement within the same semester. Depending on the reason for removal a decision will be made by the Student Teaching Director or Committee if you are allowed to obtain an additional student teaching placement.

You must be able to meet the physical demands.

Expectations continued:

•Information will be communicated to you through your UA email.•It is important that you check your UA email frequently.•Use your University email on all applications.•You must register for student teaching courses.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

We will accept Student Teaching applications between September 21st- September 25th.

Turn in all applications to the Student Teaching Office – Central Hower 303 Allow time for us to go through your

application when you drop it off. We do not accept incomplete applications.

Late applications may not be accepted.

How to read your DARS

Ignore the first red block. This is about general graduation requirements.

Look at the second red block. If there is a + this means you have completed

required courses. If there is a – there is a course not taken or the

advisor has not waived or substituted a course. If so, please see your advisor

If you see a GREEN √ this means all is good!

If you see a RED X this means you need a course/or courses. You need to register, or talk to your advisor to waive or substitute a course

Please send e-mail to [email protected] and cc your advisor. It can take several weeks to process all requests, but they will be addressed and cleared up prior to graduation.
