Registration of vital events is provided by Act No 69 of 1992. It provide at the apex of registration, the office of the Registrar General.
He issue general directives regarding registration of births and deaths Co-ordinate and unify the activities of all registration officials At State level there are 37 Chief Registrar responsible for overseeing
registration activities in each State At the Local government level, 774 Deputy chief registrar responsible
for implementation of the Act within the Local Government 2773 Registrar in all the registration centre in all the Local government
with the responsibility of registering all death
Major Bottlenecks to Registration of Death
General Apathy towards reporting death event
Cost of death certificate
Inadequate registration centre given the huge land mass of Nigeria (992 sq km)
Customs and traditions especially in reporting still-birth
Inadequate specialist to ascertain cause of death
Strategies to Address bottleneck
Advocacy through the media and other medium to enlighten the general people on the importance of death registration
Collaboration with State and Local government in providing awareness to the grass-root, logistics and personnel in the registration centre in their locality
Continuous capacity building for specialised medical personnel to ascertain cause of death
Improve funding for the registration agency
Employment of professionals to the registration agency
