TODAY'S GAME D.J. LAING LEAGUE CUP SEMI FINAL

TAYPORT v MONTROSE ROSELEA

We welcome Montrose Roselea to the Canniepairt this afternoon to contest the semi-final of the DJ .Laing League Cup. It' s Tayport' s tenth game and Montrose' s eighth in what is proving to be a marathon of a competition.

Montrose have yet to taste defeat in the competition, while Tayport fell to Broughty by the only goal of the game in a section match back in September. The winners of this afternoon's game are still on target to become the first side. to win this competition on three occasions. Tayport were winners in.1998 and 2002 with Roselea lifting the cup in 2003 and 2004. T' he teams didn' t meet last season but, in 2004/05, met each other on four occasions in eight weeks towards the end of the season, with Montrose exiting four cup competitions without scoring a goal. Ward, Peters, Hunter, Reilly, Christie, Bruce, Dailly, Knox and Middleton are no longer in the Tayport squad which played in that quartet of games. There are also a number no longer in the Montrose squad from 18 months ago, H.Smith, K.Smith, Keith, Walker, Findlater, Ross and Myers no longer feature.

Montrose just missed out on a Super League place last season, being pipped by Kinnoull, and although they might have wished for a better start in the Super League Premier Division, performances suggest it's only a matter of time before they start climbing the league

Callum Watson, who netted a barrowload of goals last season which earned him a crack at the seniors with Montrose FC, has returned to Broomfield on loan until the end of this month. Also on loan, and another player on which Tayport will have to keep an eye, is midfielder Phil Reid from Elgin City.

Montrose ' s potential was illustrated last Saturday when they Jed a revitalised Glenrothes side by 2-0 at half time in a Premier match. It ended 2-2 but the loss of two points cost Glens the league leadership.

Nobody needs to be reminded of Tayport' s stuttering form this season. Although cup form has been better, all ties have been against teams from lower divisions . With a host of crucial games coming up over the next 4 weeks, Tayport will have to get things together soon, and there ' s no better time than today.

Apart from the long term injured Craig Brown, Tayport should have a full squad from which to select, so the supporters will be looking to turn some of the outfield domination into the goals which have been as scarce as hens' teeth for much of the season.

The game is played to a finish and the winners will face either Lochee Harp or Lochee United in the final. The Lochee derby takes place at Beechwood this afternoon.

~~~~ ....... . GOOD AFTERNOON AND A VERY WARM WELCOME TO BOTH SETS OF SUPPORTERS TO THE CANNIEPAIRT FOR TODAY'S D.J LAING LEAGUE CUP SEMI-FINAL AGAINST MONTROSE ROSE LEA.
WE GO INTO THIS AFTERNOON'S GAME ON THE BACK OF A COUPLE OF TOTALLY CONTRASTING RESULTS.
A FORTNIGHT AGO WE WERE DELIGHTED TO OVERCOME AN IN-FORM KIRKINTILLOCH ROB ROY SIDE IN THE 4th ROUND OF THE SCOTTISH CUP WITH A 2-1 VICTORY. WE STARTED THE GAME WITH A VERY HIGH TEMPO AND PUT THE OPPOSfTION UNDER GREAT PRESSURE RIGHT FROM THE KICK-OFF AND DESERVEDLY WERE TWO GOALS AHEAD AFTER ONLY 6 MINUTES.
THE FIRST COMING FROM THE BACK TO FORM ROBBIE HENDERSON'S BACK POST HEADER AFTER RONNIE KENNETH HAD CHALLENGED THE ROB ROY KEEPER TO A HIGH BALL AND THEN 4 MINUTES LATER WE DOUBLED OUR TALLY, WHEN A GREAT OVERLAPPING RUN AND CROSS FROM ROSS GUNNION FOUND CHRIS WEBSTER IN THE SIX YARD BOX AND 'WEBBY' FLICKED THE BALL INTO THE CORNER OF THE NET TO SEND THE TAYPORT SUPPORT AND DUGOUT INTO 'RELIEF MODE', AS WE KNEW THAT THEY WERE GOING TO BE A VERY DIFFICULT SIDE TO BEAT.
UNFORTUNATELY, AFTER A FEW CLOSE THINGS, WE FAILED TO GET THE 'KILLER GOAL' AND AFTER 28 MINUTES WE .LET THEM BACK INTO THE GAME WITH A SOFT GOAL. WE ALLOWED A CROSS INTO THE BOX AND DID NOT ATTACK THE BALL, ALLOWING THEIR STRIKER TO LOOP:A HEADER OVER THE STRANDED FRAZER FITZPATRICK. ONCE AGAIN, WE ARE PUNISHED SEVERELY FOR A MOMENT OF SLACKNESS AND THIS HAS BEEN THE SAME OLD STORY OF LATE, LOSING A GOAL ALL TOO CHEAPLY.
AFTER THE INTERVAL I THOUGHT THAT WE CONTROLLED THE GAME AND HAD
A COUPLE OF DECENT CHANCES TO PUT THE GAME OUT OF KIRKINTILLOCH'S REACH, BUT WERE DENIED A PENAL TY BY THE REFEREE AND BARRY Mc NAUGHTON MISSED WHEN IT LOOKED EASIER TO SCORE, BUT ALL IN ALL WE WERE DELIGHTED TO BE IN THE LAST 32 OF THE SCOTTISH CUP.
LAST WEEK AT BO'NESS WAS A REALLY DISAPPOINTING RESULT FOR US, AS WE LOST AN EARLY GOAL, AND MURRAY URQUHART WAS RED CARDED AFTER ONLY 17 MINUTES FOR WHAT CAN ONLY BE DESCRIBED AS A CONTROVERSIAL DECISION BY THE REFEREE.
HE ALLEGED THAT MURRAY HAD DELIBERATELY BARGED INTO HIM, WHEN CLEARLY THE REF HAD RUN ACROSS URQUHART'S PATH. SO, AFTER GOING . INTO THE MATCH CONFIDENTLY ON THE BACK OF TWO GREAT RESULTS, WE WERE CHASING THE GAME WITH ONLY 10 MEN.
THE PLAYERS SHOWED GREAT CHARACTER AND DESIRE IN AN ATTEMPT TO WIN THE GAME, BUT IT WASN'T TO BE AND UNFORTUNATELY ONCE AGAIN WE FAILED TO GET THE POINTS AFTER HAVING SO MUCH OF THE PLAY. ROBBIE HENDERSON HtT BOTH POSTS, BARRY McNAUGHTON HAD A GREAT EFFORT SAVED AND STEVEN STEWART'S GREAT RUN AND SHOT AT GOAL WAS BLOCKED BY A DEFENDER AS WE PUSHED FOR AN EQUALISER.
I TOTALLY UNDERSTAND THE FRUSTRATIONS OF OUR SUPPORT AT OUR POOR LEAGUE FORM OF LATE, BUT WE ALL KNOW THAT ONLY HARD WORK AND A GREAT DEAL OF SPIRIT WILL GET US THROl;lGH __ THIS RUN OF BAD LEAGUE RESULTS.
WE DEFINITELY HAVE THE QUALITY PLAYERS AT THE CLUB TO PUSH US UP THE TABLE, AND THEIR DESIRE AND WILL TO WIN IS NEVER IN QUESTION. HOPEFULLY THAT DESIRE AND COMMITMENT WILL BE ON SHOW THIS AFTERNOON AS WE ENDEAVOUR TO REACH THE FIRST CUP FINAL OF THE SEASON.
WE KNOW THAT ROSELEA WILL BE TOUGH OPPONENTS AND WILL GIVE THEM TOTAL RESPECT, BUT WE ALSO KNOW THAT ONLY A PROFESSIONAL ATTITUDE AND PERFORMANCE WILL GET US A WIN TODAY. SO LET'S ALL GET BEHIND THE TEAM AND CHEER THEM ON TO VICTORY.
SINCE THIS OUR LAST HOME GAME BEFORE SANTA ARRIVES, CAN I WISH YOU ALL A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND ALL THE BEST FOR THE NEW YEAR.
Enjoy the match, cheers ... ... K11IIA
Front - Abby Oswald, George · Ritchie, Ian Rae, Brian Burchell, Ken Smith, Frankie Dewar. 53 players turned out for the AlliaJ,1ce XI that season, playing 22 league games and 11 cup· ties~ the season culminating in winning the Alliance Cup. Frankie Dewar (25 + 1 sub) made most appearances and was top scorer with 1 7 goals. Those were the days when, if you were too near the Canniepairt Pavilion or the East Common on a Saturday afternoon, there was a good chance you'd get the opportunity to fill a TFC jersey at some point. Some of the others who played that season - Stan Cowe, Ernie Sherrit, Bunter Robertson, Dickie Dewar, Bruce Burnett, Andy Dewar, Russell Clark, Richard Rennie, Derek Nicoll and Eddie Stewart.
Others who mainly played in the 1 st XI but turned out on the odd occasion for the stiffs were Ian Howe, Gordon Hughes, Stuart Davie, Ian Mathers, Spider McLaren, Ronnie Fleming, George Taylor and Lindsay Ancell.
Duncan Bruce who was transferred from Tayport on the eve ofKinnoull ' s Scottish 3rd round tie with Ashfield, found himself the unwanted centre of attention when it was reported that the Glasgow club were protesting at Duncan' s inclusion in the KinnouH team, claiming he hadn't been properly registered to talce part in the game. The draw in midweek, reported in The Courier and Evening Tele, brought Pollok out to play either Kinnoull or Ashfield. However the Perth club never had any doubt everything had been done according to the book, as chairman Chris Jones explained in The Courier on Thursday when the paper reported that Ashfield's protest had effectively found its way to the SJF A rubbish bin. The Perthshire Advertiser reported that Duncan had turned in a very confident performance in the 1-0 win over Ashfield. The paper also revealed that Kinnoull had unsuccessfully tried to secure Duncan's services previously, after he had been out on loan from Tayport at Tulloch Park. The downside to Duncan' s move to Perth was the transfer request submitted by Andy Mackie, whose place in the Kinnoull goal Duncan had talcen. The Sunday Mail covered Tayport's Scottish tie v Kirkintilloch on the Canniepairt, and had a couple of photos to illustrate Jim Nicholson's report . The Mail's snapper caught Robbie heading Tayport' s early goal and Rob Roy's Carter looking disbelievingly at the referee after receiving a red card. 'Fauldhouse hold no fears for Broughty ' said the Evening Telegraph on the eve of their Scottish Cup replay and they were not wrong with the Whitton Park c)ub racking up a 2-1 win to talce theJr place in the last 16. Monday' s 'f.elegraph hailed the achievement of the local clubs, with 6 Tayside clubs reaching the last 32 of the Cup_. · The Fife Herald, in reporting the Rob Roy tie noted that Tayport for ' an incredible 15th time in 17 campaigns, have reached the fourth round of the Scottish Junior Cup' . Manager Keith Burgess reflected on Tayport ' s win, declaring himself more than satisfied, pointing out that the win would give the side extra confidence. The Heralds's preview of the Bo'nesS-game mentioned the hitherto unheard of word 'relegation ' when it pointed out if Bo'ness were to win it would drag Tayport towards the relegation zone. However it added that, from Tayport's point of view a win was imperative for Tayport to rejoin the title race. Monday's Tele, reporting the 1-0 defeat at Bo'ness, said that Tayport ' s hopes of retaining their title suffered another blow when they lost their fourth league game in a row. Yet more confusion with the fixtures, when Monday's Courier gave 1.45pm as today ' s kick-off, while the Tele later that day correctly had 1.30pm down;as the kick-off time. The Edinburgh Evening News had Whitburn manager Derek Strickland bemoaning the fact that, in a second successive cup competition, his side had lost out to a very debatable penalty decision. On this occasion, it cost them the Scottish Cup replay in front of a big crowd at home to Kelty Hearts. Leading 2-0 at one stage, Whitburn went out 3-Z.
"Another relatively soft goal costs dearly "
says
On the balance of play, ten-man Tayport probably deserved something from last weekend's Super League fixture at Bo'ness . Robbie Henderson, for instance, twice hit the woodwork from longrange, the goalkeeper looking suspect on both occasions, and, on the second effort, there was a chance for Bryan Duell. The ball, however, was knocked wide of the target.
Duell was prominent after coming off the bench, setting up fellow substitute Steven Stewart, who was only denied by an excellent block by Bo'ness defender Paul Mortimer.
'Port skipper Roberto Morris performed similar heroics at the back, one goal-line clearance in particular standing out.
All this came in the second half of the contest , by which time the visitors were trailing. In fact , they were trailing early on, conceding yet another relatively soft goal, to Kevin Proctor, before losing Murray Urquhart to two harsh but avoidable yellow cards.
No disguising the fact that the result was a devastating one for the Canniepairt outfit and the Super League table now makes for grim reading, but, at least there has been continued Scottish Cup progress.
A fortnight ago, Kirkintilloch visited for a third round tie and, for a change, Tayport netted the all important first goal , just a couple of minutes into the game, when Robbie Henderson nodded the ball beyond the 'keeper.
Very shortly afterwards , Chris Webster was credited for glancing home number two, after Ross Gunnion had surged into the box. The Rabs pulled one back midway through the half, but never really troubled thereafter , although 'Port should have given themselves a more comfortable afternoon by netting a third. The fact that a couple of penalty claims were waved away did not help their cause, though .
Now it's cup business again, with a place in the final of the DJ Laing League cup up for grabs, so another hard-fought encounter is on the cards.
SNIFFING ABOUT THE WITH
THE SNOUT The Tayport Arms FC play the biggest match of th e i r sh or t hi s tory to morrow when they take on Banarty in the 4th Round of the Scottish Sunday Amateur Cup. Kick off at Tayport is 1pm
Whan a posting on the Juniors' Yahoo site recently intimated that Thorniewood United' s secretary, treasurer, lottery organiser , press reporter, webmaster and programme producer had all resigned, one would have imagined a mass walk - out of committee, but no . On this occasion only one person had resigned . The same guy carried out all these tasks for the club . It seems lack of support from elsewhere on the committee had finally taken its toll on another dedicated individual .
Point to ponder .... Had _the qualification criteria which ensured Celtic' s safe passage into the last 16 of the Champions League been in place in the 1978 World Cup in the Argentine, then Scotland would have qualified in place of Scotland .. And of course Ally Macleod' s team would have gone on to win the cup!
Snout hears that two fairly regular Tayport punters decided on a change of scenery last week and instead of going to Bo ' ness thought they'd take in East Fife's game at New Bayview . A bit quiet they thought as they approached the stadium. Too right it was = there was no game. East Fifa's scheduled opponents were playing in the Scottish Cup and the Fifers were playing a friendly at Arniston. Undaunted they moved along the coast to Starks Park where there was a game . Report however, was of uninspiring stuff for £12 with Rovers going down 1-0 to Dumbarton.
Former Tayport stars , Dave Reilly , Grant Cushnie and Kenny Jones are seeing out the twilight of their soccer careers with St James Amateurs. TWO weeks ago, when they lost to late goals to draw at home to Dalkeith Amateurs in the Scottish Amateur Cup, things didn't look good for Dad's Army . It got worse when there were several withdrawals for last Saturday's replay, including the goalie. Then they discovered on arrival at Dalkeith the match strip had been left in the laundry . All's well that ends wall . They won 1-0 to look forward to another round .
Dundonald Bluebell, vho stopped off at the Tayport Arms for a prematch lunch en route to Carnoustie Panmure for their 3rd round Scottish Cup tie last month, put in a call to landlady Brenda after their shock win to thank her and her staff for their hospitality . They reck oned Joe's soup was a vital factor in their 2-1 win!
