• Concern about copyright infringement for last decade– Originally software piracy – Increasing concern about entertainment media in last

five years

• Presidential level concern– President Spanier is co-chair of Joint Committee– Made decision in summer of 2003 to provide content to

students– Hired recent graduate for Project Fall 03

Goals

• Provide a legal alternative– Change attitudes about infringement– Reduce student risk of prosecution

• Provide educational material– Augment the University’s large music

collection

• Facilitate the paradigm shift to new ways of delivery

Project Description

• First phase started Spring Semester– Residence Halls only

• Summer Sessions– All students attending Summer Session

• Second phase started Fall Semester– All students at all locations– Faculty and staff for a fee

Student Use• Spring Semester

– 13,500 Students• 85% of those with Napster capable machines

– Between 80,000 and 100,000 tracks per day

• Fall Semester– 19,000 Students– 80 Employees

• Around 160,000 tracks per day

Conclusions from Survey

• Most students who have the service use it frequently

• Finding desired content determines whether students use Napster or another service

• Essentially all students view price for purchased tracks as too expensive– Probably need to lower price

– Students need better education on true cost of music

• Most students who have service value it– Considerable interest by students at other

institutions

• Complaint focus– Valued and new tracks not available– Macs not supported

• Piracy may have decreased– Content is king
