for your professionalism and work ethic. Jess was shortlisted for the Club’s
WA Industry awards in June for employee of the year and she came
home with a win! Well done Jess!
This year Communication is vital in today’s busy world. With the
introduction of the Team App it is so easy to keep updated. Hopefully you
have noticed all the notice boards with contact details concerning Patrol
Captains, and other club positions situated around the boat shed and the Directors Photo Board
in the foyer. This is all to keep you the members well informed and easy access to the right person.
This brings me to mentioning the Sorrento Old Salts. A group of people who volunteer their time to
assist with maintenance issues around the club. The cost of maintenance is huge and with their
kind assistance, helps keep the running cost of the club down. Special thanks to Don Preiato, Alan
Colley, Doug Lacklison, Bob Cousins, Neil Rowse, Bob Lindsay, Kim Baird, Lyle Arbuckle and Ian
Fieldgate.
Sorrento SLSC is dedicated to being an inclusive organisation. A family orientated and community
minded club. This season saw the Dolphin Program, which is participates with disabilities, continue
into its third year. Every Saturday morning Sorrento members and friends volunteered their time to
run this program providing opportunities in surf and beach activities, swimming, board and ski
sessions and lifesaving knowledge and understand with numbers growing. We have also secured
a grant for the Dolphin Program and this will allow us to have a co-ordinator to take on the
coming season. We look forward to this growing in the future.
The introduction of a patrol rebate last year was a success and will continue next season. Full
membership fees apply; however, all eligible will receive a $60 club voucher to be used in either
the uniform shop or restaurant.
Online registrations have increased and we encourage all members to register via
https://pnpnet.qvalent.com/OnlinePaymentServlet?cd_community=SLSA&cd_currency=AUD
Registration Day this season will be held on Sunday, 19th August. This day is for new members.
Existing members can sign up any time after the AGM in the office.
Thank you to the Constitution Committee; Jillian Dielesen, Dick Lane and Terrance Colby along
with the Disciplinary Committee consisting of Dr Norm Miller, Darryl O’Donnell and Terrance Colby,
your support is greatly appreciated.
The Street Appeal this year was well supported by our members and although we raised less
money than previous years it wasn’t through lack of trying. Street Appeal raised over $4000.

Sponsorship and Marketing
Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club relies heavily on the generosity and financial support of corporate
partners and private contributors. We have had a long and busy season on our wonderful beach,
not to mention the volunteers, plus our team of assessors and instructors and most importantly our
energetic nippers and competitors. All of this activity is costly and we must pause to thank the
very generous financial support we receive from our extended Sorrento Community.
Our appreciation extends once again to the City of Joondalup who has provided the club not
only with valuable sponsorship but greatly assist the staff and Board with problems and other
concerns that arise throughout the year.
Nine Network have continued to be gold sponsors, a highlight this year was the Nine news
presenting a live broadcast from Sorrento beach on the 18th January. Again it was awesome
seeing so many of the club’s members turning up early in the morning offering their support.
This year North Shore Tavern supported the club as a silver sponsor, and proudly hang an old boat
of the club’s from the ceiling in their Tavern. They kindly offered our members discount cards for
use at their bar. We encourage Sorrento members to reciprocate and patronage the Tavern.
We continue to enjoy a cooperative partnership with the Marmion Angling Club, patrolling their
beach especially on Sundays during their Junior sessions and providing equipment for the club’s
use. This year they were able to support the club through silver sponsorship, which is greatly
appreciated.
Thank you to Hillary’s Boardwalk who has continued as a Gold Sponsor and we reciprocate by
patrolling Hillary’s beach every weekend throughout the season.
Our appreciation to Bronze Sponsors; RJ Electrics, Liquor Barons Hillarys, RBD Building and
Maintenance, Detail West, JBM Finance, Realmark (Brad and Kate Hardingham), Mills Charters,
Complete Cabling and Tint Works.
Sponsorship through cash donations, equipment purchases, goods and services in kind or other
initiatives, plus profitable fundraising are greatly appreciated and all contribute to the smooth
running of the Club, maintain lifesaving equipment and other club facilities. This allows members
to concentrate on the club’s core role; of providing lifesaving services to Sorrento beach in a
safe, professional, inclusive and enjoyable environment.
At Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club we need to say a huge thank you to each and every one of our
sponsors; we really appreciate your ongoing support and encouragement. Thank you to
everyone involved in the Small Business Club.
In its third year the Watermans to the Wall event was a huge success with over 285 swimmers
entered. I wish to thank the hard work of the committee this year, Ron Clarke, Dave Norton, Jeff,
Garry, Helen and Jess Bunford. All of our funds for the Watermans to the Wall goes to the Sorrento
SLSC building fund.

Grants
In the last financial year we have applied for over 5 grants to assist us in providing our services to
both the community and our members. There are many criteria in which the club falls, community
services, education, children, sport and emergency preparedness. Although this is a wide range
understanding what the grantor wishes to achieve can be difficult.
We have had some outstanding success this year, of the 5 we have been successful in 4 of them,
with the other one still pending. Those 4 grants where worth $45,000 which we’ve used to
purchase new equipment and training of staff.
Thank you to Mick Saunders for applying for these and getting the club these funds. Your work is
amazing.

LIFESAVING REPORT
This was my first season as Life Saving Director taking over the position from Garry Bunford who has
filled the position for the last four seasons.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all that have assisted me in the club’s Life Saving
function which includes patrols, lifesaving, first aid, equipment maintenance, external events
coordination, IRB/Jet Ski and requalification of awards.
I wish to thank the members of the Beach committee for their work this season. The Beach
Committee team’s role is to manage these functions during and out of the season, which was
done with professionalism and enthusiasm.
The Committee consisted of the below
Laurie Mott – Lifesaving Director
Stephen Thomas - Looking after education, first aid and requalification
Colleen Blevins - Coordinating external events which are an important fund raiser for the club
Aran Buckley - Looking after IRBs and, assisted by Richard Elderfield (Jet Skis)
Ruth Krammer - Being the patrol officer, coordinating beach patrols
Craig Gamble– Responsible for equipment maintenance in the position of equipment officer.
Damien Newbold - Assisting myself in the director’s duties.
I would also like to thank the Beach Committee and the many club members who supported Life
Saving during the year by assisting in patrols, external events, training or other support function.
Congratulations to this year’s award winners for the 2017/18 season.

Patrols
We achieved over 8,600 patrol hours for the season which was more than 500 hours greater than
last season. Ruth Krammer co-ordinated the patrols this season, fulfilling the difficult position of
patrol officer. This was the first full season of patrols with the Beach enclosure in place. The beach
enclosure is becoming a popular destination for beach goers, attracting more people to our
beaches. Over all a great effort by the patrolling members, who performed rescues ranging from
pulling people out from the ocean & performing CPR through to bin diving to rescue car keys for
beach goers.
Also, a special thank you to all members involved in the rescues and subsequent unsuccessful
resuscitation attempt.
First Aiders
Last season the patrolling first aider’s initiative commenced and our current season saw a small
number of first aiders join patrols. This initiative is still in its formative with first aiders requiring an
advanced first aid certificate without an SRC or Bronze certificate. Their function was to provide
first aid only and allows qualified members to participate in rescues. In addition this season a first
aid "community" has been created to allow those members interested to gain additional skills and
practise.
During the season first aid equipment and stores have been simplified and rationalized making it
easier to maintain stocks and reducing equipment costs
Water Safety Events
This year we participated as water safety in a number of events including the Trievents, Rottnest
swim and North coast Tri club. These events are a significant revenue stream for the club.
I would like to thank all who participated in these events with a special thanks to Colleen Blevins
who spent many an hour organising members to attend these events, coordinating the water
safety as well as attending all events. Also, a special mention to all of the IRB team who were
usually the first to come in to set up water safety and the last to leave.
Abalone Patrols
Again this year a great effort to all
members who participated in the
Abalone patrols which were moved
to Saturdays this season. Colleen’s
efforts resulted in a great turnout for
these patrols with the club a major
contributor of resources. Thanks to
Colleen, Malcom & Sue for being
area & section coordinators for these
patrols.
Education
Education again rose to the
challenge of training and requals
29 | P a g e
with approximately 135 members completing training this year and over 400 requals undertaken.
One of the initiatives implemented by Stephen Thomas this season was to try and identify & train
up younger members to be trainers and assessors. This will carry through next season.
Additional Equipment
During the season we took delivery of an additional ATV to assist in patrolling the beach. This has
proved to be a useful and valuable addition to our equipment fleet.
Grants this year assisted in the purchase of two defibrillators, first aid backpacks and an additional
rescue board. These will greatly assist in our life saving efforts over the coming season.

JUNIOR’S REPORT
Sorrento juniors continues to manage a large volume of nippers; 670
The junior age managers and coaches delivered a successful season doubling previous season’s
numbers of people attending training sessions. We also managed to for fill our education
commitments for the season.
My time on the board of management has ended and there are so many people that I need to
thank so if I forget your name please forgive me but please know I truly thank you for your help
and support over the last 7 years. I would like to thank my wife Helen and family Evan and Jessica
for their support over the last 7 years while I have been on the Sorrento Board of Management. I
could not have done this without them and their amazing support.
This season we saw the introduction of under 8 and under 9’s in competition and as normal
Sorrento lead the way helping to make it the success it was. Sorrento little nippers certainly lead
the way. Sorrento juniors came third overall in the WA State Championships this season, clearly
making our club the club of choice and confirming that Sorrento Juniors are moving in the right
direction. You can find all the results from the SLSWA State Championships on this link -
https://www.mybeach.com.au/members/surf-sports/competitions/sunsmart-wa-surf-life-saving-
championships/
We anticipate the Junior Age Committee and Age Structures will continue to provide the energy
and guidance to parents to further improve our position in season 18/19. Sorrento is particularly
proud to facilitate nipper development for all aspiring youngsters, whether it be based around
Sunday nipper activities, life skills or competition. We are highly focussed on both land and water
with both areas receiving due focus and necessary support, with even further focus being
planned for next season. Initial seasonal focus was based on every age group nipper consciously
achieving their respective surf award, in line with SLSA requirements.
One of our primary challenges in a club of our size is providing effective communication across all
families. This season with the help of Jessica Bunford from the office and our age managers we
have tried to improve our communication to all families.
I am truly in awe of all the volunteers that help the club in summer and winter and I would like to
thank the following people who volunteer each week with the children of our great club your
age managers.

CLUB SERVICES REPORT
Bar and Café Operations
Ryan Dhue was appointed as Bar Manager at the beginning of the season and is to be
commended on his diligent work and organisation of the bar team. Ryan decided not to
continue in the role from May. The committee has supported a change in the role to be more
catering focussed and as a result Holly Beggs has been appointed as the casual catering
supervisor.
This season saw a drop in bar revenue in comparison to last year, likely to be reflective of less
activity in organised social events. Café revenue and profitability was improved from last year
due to consolidation of suppliers and focus on improving service times and menu selection.
A review of catering equipment is currently underway with recommendations to improve
capacity and service times to be presented to the committee for review.
Social Club
The glittering 60th Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club Awards dinner was successful held at Ambrose
Estate and was attend by over 100 club members and dignitaries. The social committee is to be
commended on their hard work to organise and deliver a great event.
Successful social events require support from club members not just to attend but to get involved
in the planning and execution. The social committee is looking for people to join the committee
to provide ideas to bring club members together more frequently. Ask not what your club can do
for you but what can you do for your club!
Uniform Shop
Despite challenges with suppliers to deliver stock in a timely manner the uniform shop with the
wonderful support from the volunteer staff provided great service to the club with uniform sales
generating turnover of $65k with a small profit. The Aussie’s shirt proved popular as did the juniors
state championship shirt. Lessons learnt to implement for next season will include earlier ordering
of key items, relocation of the shop during the start of the season to cope with large volumes of
shoppers and early discussions with various committees and user groups to determine uniform
needs for the up and coming season.
Facilities
Club facilities have been slowly improved over the season. New ceiling fans have replaced the
old metal ones. 15amp power has been installed inside the hall and outside in the courtyard to
enable the flexible use of the hot buffet unit to improve food service.
Government funding will see the roller doors to the shed replaced and a new waste contactor
has been appointed providing better and more cost effective waste removal.

CLUB DEVELOPMENT REPORT
Youth
What an amazing season our youth have had this year! Below are some of the things we have got
up to this season!
Had U14 sleepover to kick off the season – which has been running for a few years now.
Had 11 new youth sign up to U14s – most of whom had never done surf club before – so that was
great.
Did SRC course for 6 weeks – and had 42 U 14s finish the course – out of 42 people as well as 4
youth from U15s who were unable to do the course during the season before.
All of the youth who completed the src were provided with their uniforms and not only did their
required patrol hours but many did extra hours – simply because they wanted to or they were
filling in for other youth. our trainers were fantastic and it was a tremendous effort and certainly
kept the youth at the club.
The youth also had the yip point programme – which many completed various levels of it and
were presented at the end of year function – by Dale – who went through the activities each
youth had done in order to accumulate the points – and it was very impressive.
The youth had Sunday mornings on the beach where they did water based activities, one time
had a volleyball game, did board training, land based activities and team building exercises –
had a good turnout throughout the season – and there were at least 10 youth there – even on
the holiday Sundays.
Had end of year social function at the Osbourne Park bowling club – with feedback from the
members of that club saying that not only was it the largest group they had hosted there it was a
great group – well-mannered and that we would be welcome back any time – good turn out
and very positive way to end the season.
Youth could also help out at dolphins on Saturday mornings – which 2 of our U14s did – and loved
it.
Youth helped out at BBQs such as the regular sun after nippers BBQ, the fund raising Australia day
BBQ.
Youth provided water safety for different age groups on some Sundays – or simply helped out in
whatever way was needed for nippers groups.
Selected youth participated in the camps – which were a great success.
Youth who compete participated at the Aussies – which was fantastic.
Chris Milne ran the surf ski component where we had all the U14s and some U15s complete a
have a go day at Hillarys marina with surf skis – mentors volunteered from the established ski
groups and the day had to run over 2 dates due to the large numbers – from this we got 22 youth
who wanted to continue onto the 6 week course where mentors came and assisted les leanne
36 | P a g e
and chris – to further develop their ski technique – mainly at the marina – and had excellent
support from the parents – loading and unloading skis from surf club and at marina and towing
the ski rack etc.
From this group 2 were promoted into the thus morning paddling – Emily Rance and Ellie Clarke –
as they were capable of doing that and both have attended some sessions. The others – as well
as the above 2 are also offered ski training – at Sorrento beach – each Sunday morning – weather
permitting – throughout the year. Last Sunday Chris said there were 8 youth there as well as a
number of mentors and even some parents of youth who were interested in giving it a go.
Some youth furthered their education by doing first aid courses that were on offer
Some did march past – and competed at Aussies.
Many participated in the training squads offered throughout the week during the season as well
as early Sunday morning
All u14s on Sunday mornings participated in the club swim – which swelled the numbers there –
basically every Sunday morning the youth sign in with me, then sign in at boat shed for swim –
then do club swim and head to our flag – which is the green and white Sorrento club flag – and
do beach and water activities until about 10.30/10.45 – then many headed back to club for
sausage sizzle
Youth volunteered for additional patrols such as abalone patrol
Youth were made aware of how the bronze course is recognised in relation to highschool
graduation and can also be used for things like duke of Edinburgh – which a number of youth are
in the process of doing
Did information evening for u13s – black caps – who are joining youth next season – to make
them aware of how great youth is and what we have done this season
YIPS Program
YIP is designed to motivate, recognise and reward youth, while providing them with the
opportunity to explore and become involved in a range of areas within surf lifesaving which they
may not have previously considered. The program rewards and recognises youth participants for
their commitment. It sets achievable goals to encourage on-going participation across a range
of lifesaving activities while promoting leadership skills, personal development and social
interaction with peers.
YIP also encourages a sense of organisational commitment and pride and assists the club with
the process of succession planning through the identification of future leaders. YIP is a recognition
and reward program that is self-paced and can be completed in three years (give or take),
depending on the member. The rewards program operates utilising a similar concept to that of
frequent flyer points where participants collect points for being involved in a range of lifesaving
activities. The more activities they engage in and the more hours they volunteer, the greater the
points collected.

COMPETITION REPORT
We had to endure even more changes within competition this season with the introduction of the
Surf League carnivals. There were many positives in the running of these carnivals including time
efficient, however they certainly set challenges as a club to form each teams. Our Coaches
often tearing their hair out to find to right mix of athletes. This is a team based competition in a
similar style as the existing interstate and World team competitions. Each team were to include a
Surf boat crew, a sprinter, a swimmer, a board paddler & ski paddler with at least 4 males and
four females in each team. This is where the challenge was set across many clubs, to make up
these teams. Clubs could mix with other clubs if required, for example they may not have a Boat
crew.
On a whole the competition was taken on with great encouragement and it will be interesting to
see if this continues next season.
Considering Sorrento are continually struggling within our water disciplines our success overall was
without a doubt nothing short of outstanding. Our Beachies once again absolutely dominating
the competition here in WA. This along with our R&R “Rescue & Resuscitation” & March Past set
Sorrento in good sted for an amazing year.
Our R&R discipline spend many tireless hours struggling to get teams together to train.
Compliments to Darryl O’Donnell & Theresa Gartland, Sue Lemmon & Mick Saunders for all your
hours of commitment. And then of course our March Past teams, coached by Ken Jenner &
Roger Nowell. Again, many tireless hours spent pounding the sand to finally make that elusive
Gold trophy in both teams at States.
Our Boaties had an amazing year as well this year. There were many boaties, especially women,
challenging for seats in boats which is a great position for any club to be in. Thank you to Muzz,
Watto and all your amazing helpers. See Muzz’s report for more detail.
We finished SECOND overall at the completion of Senior State Championships in March this year.
This is a massive achievement. I took the liberty of researching the past six years to see where we
have finished prior to now:
2012/13: 1st – Trigg 2nd – City Beach 3rd – Sorrento
2013/14: 1st – City 2nd – Trigg 3rd – Sorrento
2014/15: 1st – Trigg 2nd – City 3rd – Mullaloo 4th – Sorrento
2015/16: 1st – Trigg 2nd – Mullaloo 3rd - Sorrento
2016/17: 1st – Trigg 2nd – City 3rd - Sorrento
2017/18: 1st – Trigg 2nd – Sorrento
I’d like to Congratulate ALL athletes plus Coaches, Captains, Officials, Scorers & Helpers for
everything you have done for Sorrento this past year. Without ALL of you the above would not
have been possible. Well Done. Please find following our individual discipline reports.

Board Report
This season our junior squad was led by Bill Hughes and our senior squad was coached by Callan
Preiato.
We have a small senior squad of dedicated athletes who consistently attend training and were
rewarded with some impressive results at this year’s State Titles. Here are some notable winners:
Tim Berry, Daniel Snook and Ben Waterman came away with 3rd in the Board Relay
An outstanding paddle by Sienna Berry in her board race saw her take home the silver
medal.
Ben Snook: 6th individual board
Tim Berry: 5th Board Race
Lucas Wilson: 1st U/14 iron
U15/girls: 5th board relay
This season we were lucky enough to purchase three new Kracka boards for our up-coming youth
athletes.
Also, a special mention to Tom Wisken who has been doing a fantastic job throughout the season
repairing boards. On that note, if you are paddling a club board and it needs repairs please see
me (Ashlee Booker) as I will be taking care of that next season. Remember, check the board
before taking it out and let someone know if you damage it so the repairs can be sorted.
Looking forward, the key message I have for the board squad is that if you want the results at
States and Aussies you need to be prepared to train hard, work on your technique, commit and
attend training throughout the entire season. The squad size I saw a week out from Aussies would
be my goal for the upcoming season. The more people in a squad, inevitably creates
competition along with comradery. These two elements are keys for success. To the incredible
swimmers out there in our club, join us for at least two board sessions each week. We would love
to have you! Let’s take these 5th places in relays, to medal wins.
Furthermore, it is certainly not ALL about winning (that’s my motto) but keeping our mind, body
and soul healthy. This sport we are lucky to have found ourselves in provides us with a place to
exercise with like-minded people of all ages. I recognise busy school and work life can be difficult
to juggle however consider this quote by Kenneth H Cooper:
“The reason I exercise is for the quality of life I enjoy.”
Kenneth H. Cooper.
See you on the beach!

Rescue & Resuscitation Report
It has been a long season with highs and lows. We entered the most R&R teams ever at Aussies,
had an outstanding States but sadly lacked support from SLSWA.
MEGA-BIG thank you to our senior coaches Darryl (Opens) and Theresa (Juniors); our coaching
panel of Darby, Annelise, Samantha and Sue. Also, Roger and ‘Woz’ for providing feedback to
teams to improve technique. The development coaching by Theresa with our Nippers is
unparalleled. Current and former R&R kids combined in the U23’s Marchpast winning the State
Championships and Silver at Aussies (Sorrento’s first medal in March Past history – just beating the
Opens). Thank you, Theresa for your hours of development with these kids.
Our Open teams excelled at States with three Gold and four Silver; winning the six person flag
back to back. Unfortunately, no medals at Aussies with fourths and fifths, teams performed
magnificently in very trying conditions.

Boat Report
What a 12 months, from the amazing King George Sound of Albany in June to the Avon valley in
August then up to the wind swept (even by local standards) beach of Geraldton in January,
back to Perth for the State and Aussie titles April.

It has been one of the most eventful, challenging and successful seasons in a while. We have had
Rowers injured, Keels torn off, Boats damaged, Oars snapped, Partial nudity, Bones broken but a
lot of fun and plenty of laughs.
The Shark Bait crew rowed above and beyond making the quarter finals at the Aussies, Blonde
Bomb Shells were always ready to have a go. Silver backs had a good crack and laugh along the
way. The Psychos also represented the club well. There were numerous changes and swaps with
in the crews due to various different reasons. Medals won and State Masters, Aussie master. Great
results!
Thanks to all the Boaties for your efforts, your wiliness to step up and in to fill a gap and most of all
your passion for Surf Boats.
Special thanks to Watto, Sam Gannon, Claire & Rowsie. Thanks also to JAD Enterprises for keeping
the trailers and pumps going. Massive thanks Greg from GT Fiberglass for ALL the URGENT repairs
that you sorted at the drop of a hat even on a Sunday afternoon.

Officials Report
The Surf Season 2017/2018 has concluded and it was a very successful season for Sorrento
Officials.
We have had a core group of Officials who have been involved in every event this past season
starting with the IRB series followed by Pool Rescue and then into the summer series of carnivals
and all performed their roles exceptionally well.
I would like to let everyone know some of the outstanding performances by our Officials.
We as a club supplied the Carnival Referee and Deputy Referee for the State Endurance
Championships.-Graham Snook and Janine Boyle.
The club also supplied Championship Referee for the Little Nipper States- Garry Bunford
In a first We supplied all 4 Water Sectional Referees in the Junior State Titles.-Roger Nowell Gary
Bunford Janine Boyle and Graham Snook.
At the Open State Championships we had 2 Water Sectional Referees- Youth was Graham Snook
and Ladies was Janine Boyle.
We supplied Officials in all areas at the Australian Titles.
In the Boat Arena we represented by Chris Hainsworth and Cathy Park.
In the R&R area we had Sue Lemmon
When it came to IRB officials at Carnivals we were led by Kingsley Smith Ian Smallwood and Aran
Buckley.
If I have forgotten anyone I'm sorry but as we had so many it is hard to know who you all are.
In regards to members who wish to become Officials it is all done online so you can become an
Official whilst sitting in the comfort of your home.
I would like to thank the Club for supporting me this year in my role of Officials Officer.
I would especially like to thank my wife Julie who has had to put up with me going to carnivals
early and staying late at Carnivals and also to my children Daniel and Ben who sometimes also
have to get to Carnivals earlier than they wish or stay later than they wish.
Graham Snook

IRB Racing Report
To start, I would like to mention that IRB racing isn’t just a bunch of people who are just here to
have a fun time and get some high action thrills. The IRB racing team work all year round not just
on racing during winter but through summer doing water safety, maintaining the boats and
engines.
The team put hours put into training by doing the little things like turning, picking up patients,
negotiating surf, all these help to increase are abilities as IR drivers and crews.

Last season we had a fantastic season and we ended up in a lot of semi finals and some finals
but still medals elude us even with the fantastic support of everyone in the team. The team is like
one big family we are trying to grow this little team into a big one so we can rival some of the
bigger clubs. We are growing and learning every year and there will be great things to come so
look out the Sorrento IRB racing team are coming.

Beach Report
The 2017-2018 season for the Sorrento Beachies was nothing short of stellar! Once again with our
team culture and the senior group all helping with coaching and mentoring duties and our
amazing parent group, the team excelled!
First thank you to Johnny Hackett as Beach captain, Claire Rafferty, Jeremy Plint, Jackson
Symonds and Jackie Lord for all taking sessions when I couldn’t and Jacko for once again
providing technical training to the team. Thank you to Tony and the trainers at Peak Body who
made a difference to the performance of the Beachies and of course all our amazing parents
who always put their hand up to help!
We once again had State representatives go away for both Senior and Youth competitions
including Jackson Symonds, Charlie Rigby, Sydney Rafferty, Taylah Rafferty, Cristian Sayers
(couldn’t attend) Tyson Cook, Jared Thompson, Ollie Weymouth and Sienna Algeri. Jackson
Symonds and Sydney Rafferty were also selected to compete in an Ocean 6 series during the
season.
States had some disappointments in unlucky lane draws, dropped batons and DQ’s, but also saw
some great performances!! One being Charlie Rigby taking out both the U19 and Open sprint
from reining champ Jackson. We picked up 1,2,3 in the open male sprint, u17 female sprint, U15
male flags, 1,2 u19 male flags, U19 male sprints and Open male flags. Our youth athletes in u14
did an amazing job at their first senior States as well coming away with a few medals. We also
had finalists in every event we entered.
Aussies was huge with finalists in every event we entered. Jackson took out his 4th gold in the open
male sprint being the first person to do this in 53 years. Charlie Rigby also took out his 3rd
consecutive sprint gold in the u19 sprint, Sydney Rafferty took home bronze in the U17 female
sprint. In the relays we dominated, Gold in u15 male relay, U17 female relay, U19 male relay and
Silver in U17 male relay and bronze in U19 female relay. Some of our athletes ran in 3 relays and
up to 9 times in one day! Charlie Rigby, Sam Hodgkin, Sydney Rafferty, Charley Rafferty, Amy
Breeman, Tai Kirkpatrick all ran multiple times in multiple relays!! We didn’t pick up any medals but
had finalists in all the events we entered and had a few 4ths and 5ths!
It’s hard to condense the amazing season we have had into a one-page report so hopefully the
highlight reel above gives half of the indication of the amazing efforts!
Lastly a massive thank you to the team for putting in the hard work and supporting each other
throughout the year! You are all champs!

Swim Report
Our club offers swimming opportunity twelve months of the year with Stingers Swimmers hitting the
ocean on Sunday mornings over winter, Winter and Summer Swimming offered for our Juniors,
Youth, Senior and Masters, strong representation by Sorrento in the winter pool rescue series and
associated training as well as strong representation in the water events over summer.
The 2017/2018 competition season for our swimmers started 12months ago during winter with both
the Pool Rescue Series and 2017/2018 SLSWA Pool Rescue State Championships. Our athletes
trained weekly for the Pool Rescue Series between May – August. Pool rescue brings all of our
clubs disciplines together with ski and board paddlers, beachies, boat rowers and swimmers
pulling on the green cap in the winter months for a fun day out at the pool. Sorrento finished in a
strong third place in the Nippers point score behind Fremantle and Trigg Island, second in the
Senior point score behind Trigg Island and third in the Masters point score behind North Cottesloe
and Fremantle. Congratulations to the athletes who represented Sorrento with special mention to
those that medalled across the two-day event.
Sorrento’s strength in the Pool Rescue discipline was recognised with four athletes selected to
represent WA in the Surf Life Saving WA State team in Adelaide (August 2017). Congratulations to
Ben Waterman, Dayna Tindall, Drew Corrigan and Tara Smith who helped WA cement their third
place standing behind Queensland and NSW. The state team events are combined with the
Australian Pool Rescue National Championships and our above listed athletes, along with masters
athlete Andrew Ridley performed some outstanding swims with many personal bests.
Congratulations to Australian medallists:
Silver: Andrew Ridley – Men 30 -34 Years 200 LC Obstacles Race.
Bronze: Dayna Tindall - Women 13 Year Olds 200 LC Meter Obstacle Race. Andrew Ridley - Men
30-34 50 LC Meter Manikin Carry. Andrew Ridley - Men 30-34 100 LC Meter Manikin Carry w/Fins
Masters.
In the surf our team is small but displays and great talent which was highlighted, especially in our
youth age groups with some great results. On a national scale stand out performances from Ash
Booker, Jessica Madden, Dayna Tindall, Ella Packer, Billie Armstrong and Lucas Wilson made for
some exciting spectating.
Congratulations to Australian medallists:
Silver: Ashlee Booker – Female 30-34 Years Surf Race
Bronze: Janie Rowse – Female 65-69 Years Rescue Tube Race
At the little nipper and junior state titles Sorrento is showing some real dominance in the water.
Individual swim medallists included Martha Chin, Shore Povey, Shay Burke, Leo Whelehan, Bronte
Begley, Freya Lauren Weston and Liam Foley. Our U/10, U/11 and U/12 boys also showed their
strength medalling in surf teams events.

Sorrento SLSC has a history of running quality club events and the Mile Swim, Presidents Marathon
and Sunday morning swim series were no exception. Due to timing and date changes the Mile
Swim and Presidents Marathon had lower than normal attendance in 2018 but were great days
on Sorrento beach with some quality racing. I encourage all members to get behind these club
events next season. Special thanks to Jeff Xavier for your work during the season with our timing
and event support and congratulations to all participants place getters.
The Watermans to the Wall Swim, the last official Open Water Swim on WA’s calendar continues
to evolve. This was my second year swimming the event and I am again confident to say it is one
of the best run open water swims across the coast. More than 180 individual swimmers enjoyed a
great event and helped raise funds for the clubs building fund. Congratulations to the committee
lead by Helen Bunford on your hard work.
Sorrento is fortunate to have a large group of passionate coaches that assist with our swim
training. To our coaching team who run both pool and ocean sessions for our members we thank
you. You are passionate and the work you do in developing our members is outstanding.

FINANCE REPORT
It is with pleasure that I present the Financial Statements for the year ended 30 April 2018.
A current focus of the Club has been and will continue to be a drive towards having adequate
funds available for the proposed redevelopment of the club rooms. All budgets presented and
set in place at the start of the season were adhered to and we have returned a surplus of
$148,424 for the season with a net asset position of $1,053,444 as at 30 April 2017.
The finances across all service areas are well planned and disciplined. I would like to make
special note of the excellent efforts of Christine Cougan and Mick Saunders in once again
successfully sourcing government and corporate grants. Most of the capital expenditure for the
season was covered by these grants meaning that we are in the position to transfer cash reserves
to the building fund. As such we have been able to utilize the bulk of the operational surplus from
the last two seasons and an extra $150,000 was transferred to the building fund term deposit on
17 May 2018.
The building levy raised $17,535 during the year. From this $28,136 was expended on the planning
stages for the new building. Together with the transfer mentioned above the balance of the
building fund reserve now currently sits at $242,081.
Capital expenditure for the year of $54,769 was used to purchase competition equipment, IRB,
lifesaving equipment, replacement of flagpoles and continued re-investment in junior boards.
The Board has not recommended an increase in membership fees for the 2018/19 season. I would
like to thank the Board for their support over the season.
