Installations to Date

Good progress over the last few months:– Decay solenoid/cooling plant installation largely

complete– Ready for cold test very soon, transfer line connected

but compressor will be uprated later by Linde– Conventional magnet installation is just about done– Preparations for concrete removal made – start cutting

today(!) Delayed by Linde fridge problems– cKOV a & b installed– Upstream vacuum chamber installed– Beam counters installed– On-line target has run, with permission for 5K more

pulsesDon’t intend to cover detail here – see MICO page and MICE News page

Future Installations work

•The Infrastructure Project is bigger than anyone thought, but now it’s untangled•The cost was underestimated, but we are now reconciled – see below:•It’s nominally a phase one activity, but it will run into phase two•Use of tracker readout and heavy work are incompatible•It will clash with the experiment build, data-taking and the ISIS run schedule•Minimally we have to remove the concrete ramp and build the false floor before we can do steps one and two with tracker•But a revised step one is agreed – see later•The Oversight Committee has told us:

– ‘Recommend the magnetic shield wall build goes ahead without delay’– In effect we have been given permission spend the money (about

£500K, which we didn’t have before) as soon as we can, based on the assumption that we finish at end of June

– This is an unambiguous instruction!

– We have done this; the big-ticket contracts are placed

5

Implications of Infrastructure Build

Option One, ‘original’ step one, just TOFs & KL:– Does not need false floor– Assumes target running by 9th June– Prefabrication of shield wall supports and plates order

are underway– TOF1 & KL are installed on existing high floor– Temporary fence around area is made– A sliding beamstop at West end of DSA– This way, we:

• Eliminate clash between tracker readout and heavy civil work as no tracker present

• Do some data-taking as early as possible• Satisfy OsC demand

– So I believe that step one (revised) and infrastructure build can be concurrent

Future Installation work

•Concrete removal started•False floor design basically complete

– Flexible arrangement to accommodate unknown RF distribution layout OK now but more difficult than we thought! Final drawing approval by mid-April, fabrication will start then

•Contracts for shield wall supports and plates have been placed – pre-fabrication has started•A/C units delivered end April. Power is laid in, supplier to do installation•Revised step one can start with delivery of KL, TOF1 and sliding beamstop (May/June) Floorplan is marked out.•New targets #1 & #2 are underway

– Improved QA and test procedure to address actuator coil problems

8

May shutdown plans

We need to:– Install TOF0– Dismantle existing target– Install DSA roof, walkway and fence– Install and commission target #1 & #2– Excavate mound against South Wall– Install sliding beamstop– Finalise PPS for DSA

Owners of these tasks have been invited to give their plans – will work into overall schedule

I’m assuming access to DSA from 18th May to 9th June

MICO Organisation

MICO meetings are now weekly– Mondays, 14:30 GMT – details at MICO webpage– Each sub-project has a nominated contact who

delivers a five-minute report– Milestone table is reviewed weekly– Concentrate on problems and solutions Milestone complete

Use of Technical Board

Recently there have been some technical conflicts:– For example, re-routing of cKOV cabling over the DSA

wall close to cryo-tubes for Decay solenoid – could compromise cooling performance and compressor ventilation

– Obviously decisions are taken in good faith at the time– Any proposed deviations from the baseline layout (the

master MICE drawing) must be recorded by drawing and writing and submitted to the Technical Board (meeting can be convened at short notice) before any work is done

– A 3D CAD assembly for integration is in progress, which should make visualisation easier
