Length

• Length – The longest measure of something or the amount that it measures from end to end.

• The length of the caterpillar is 6 inches.

• Width – The distance that something measures from one side to the other.

• The width of the caterpillar is about 2 inches

• A ruler

• A tape measure

• A yard stick

A ruler is made up of 12 inches. There are 12 inches in one foot.

A yard stick is made up of 3 feet. Since there are 12 inches in one foot, there are 36 inches in one yard (12inches x 3 feet = 36 inches)

What are all the other lines for?

On a ruler the numbers that are listed are the inches. There are the lines for the ¼ inch, ½ inch and ¾ inch marks, but the numbers aren’t there.
