Daily care helps avoid diabetic foot complicationsWith the obser-

vance of NationalDiabetes Monthin November, Dr.John Gerhard, amember of theAmerican Collegeof Foot and AnkleSurgeons withoffices in SheffieldVillage, reminds residents with diabe-tes that following simple foot care tipscan reduce their risk of toe, foot or legamputations. The Centers for Disease Control

National Diabetes Statistics Report for2020 states that 34.2 million Americanshave diabetes and 88 million are con-sidered pre-diabetic. Diabetes was theseventh leading cause of death in 2017.The total costs of treating diabetes and

its complications was $327 billion in2017.People with diabetes are 10 times

more likely to have a lower limb ampu-tated than people without diabetes, ac-cording to the American Diabetes As-sociation. Dr. Gerhard says the diseasecan cause poor blood circulation andnerve damage in the feet, making themvulnerable to developing ulcers, infec-tions, deformities, and brittle bones. The website FootHealthFacts.org

provides this foot care tips for peoplewith diabetes:• Inspect feet daily for injuries that

could lead to dangerous ulcers.• Gently wash feet in lukewarm (not

hot!) water.• Moisturize feet, avoiding the area

between the toes.• Never use a sharp instrument to

trim corns or calluses yourself; this canlead to serious infections.• Inspect the inside of shoes before

wearing.People with diabetes must always be

vigilant, says Dr. Gerhard, and see theirprimary care physician or podiatrist atthe first sign of trouble. Early treat-ment can keep diabetic foot problemsfrom progressing and reduce the risk ofamputations.Dr. Gerhard will be hosting a free

foot screening for diabetics andnondiabetics at the NeuroSpinecare,Inc (NSI) office in Sheffield Village(5319 Hoag Dr, Suite 115) on Saturday,October 17. Call 440-930-6015 now toschedule your private screening. Due toCovid concerns, this will be by appoint-ment only.

We sometimes have totake time out from theseparticularly anxious timesto appreciate and celebratethe blessings that surroundus. Practicing medicine inLorain County has beena privilege of mine for 39years and joining a stableneurosurgical practiceknown as NeuroSpinecare Inc., whichwas incorporated exactly 50 years ago, apoint of pride.LORAIN COUNTY has transformed

into a vibrant, family friendly commu-nity which has seen steady growth inhousing, retail, education, and ameni-ties. It still retains farms, farmers mar-kets, marinas, and a feeling of countrythat is priceless. We are blessed with excellent medical

facilities that are regularly garneringnationwide recognition in multiplespecialties including spine, orthope-dics, cardiology, pulmonary medicine, and others. Our medical establishmentsdealt admirably well with the pandemic

assault that surprised us allin its swiftness and feroc-ity. Lorain County suffered85 deaths as of 9/11 and hashad 7.22 infections per 1000.Writing this article on asomber September 11 it wasreassuring that this week wewere a yellow county in thewww.coronavirus.ohio.gov

weekly report, with the second lowestcaseloads out of 88 counties in Ohio.We must believe that all these facts

bode well for our community and thatLorain County will remain a place thatour children and grandchildren willvalue as their home, rather than a com-munity that people run from. It is dur-ing these times of stress that our feelingof caring, our spaciousness, our tradi-tions will serve as a hopeful beacon

The past is your lessonThe present is your giftThe future is your motivationUnknown

NeuroSpinecare, Inc. 50 years in Lorain CountyA team approach to spine care, the NeuroSpinecare way

NeuroSpinecare is a collaborationof diverse medical practitioners thatformed 50 years ago to deliver themost efficient options of spine care tothe patients of LORAIN County. Werecognized early on that our patientsfaced chopped up, confusing pathswhen they sustained back problems. They hear different explanations andoften are given contradictory advicefor their problems depending on whatspecialty of medicine they happen toencounter.NeuroSpinecare consists of physical

therapists, pain management physi-cians with Anesthesia and Physicalcare background, nurse practitionersand spine surgeons who, as a team, direct the patients to the most appro-priate and relevant treatment tailoredto their specific problem.Medicine in general is challenged by

the question of best treatment and has

tried to channel treatments into algo-rithms to obtain reproducible resultsthat could be then compared side byside. It is obvious from the responsesto the pandemic that it is sometimesdifficult to reach clear cut treatmentmethods and that individuals and theirhealth problems do not always fall intoneat categories. We are surrounded by excellent

medical facilities with good surgicaland diagnostic capability which enableus to do our work with confidence.Nevertheless, the best answer even inthese times is that medicine remainsan art form where listening to thepatient carefully is as important asfilling questionnaires and obtainingtests. Treating our patients as family orfriends remain our commitment.Contact our office via our website at

Both locations offer laserassisted refractive cataract surgery,LASIK, pediatric ophthalmology, andoculoplastics (eyelid surgery). Thenew state of the art center is designedto offer patients a safe and comfortableexperience. The Avon Pointe location has very

little in common with a typical eyedoctor’s office. You won’t find a singlepair of glasses here, and the eye doc-tors at Avon Pointe don’t do traditionaleye exams. What you will find at theAvon Pointe location is specialization.

Pediatric ophthalmology, oculoplastics,LASIK and laser assisted refractive cat-aract surgeries will all be available un-der one roof. The facility is equippedto provide the most advanced technol-ogy available to treat eye disease suchas cataract and glaucoma. The doctorswill also offer elective and cosmeticprocedures.

“Giventhe ecosys-tem that theorganizationhas devel-oped on thewest side ofClevelandover the pastfew decades, openingour secondsurgery cen-ter in Avonwas an easydecision. So much

of our company’s model is predicatednot only on the direct services that weoffer to our patients, but also workingcollaboratively with other opticians, nursing homes, and providers acrossthe healthcare spectrum to delivercomprehensive eye care services to

our patients and communities that weserve.” said Shamik Bafna, M.D..The Avon Pointe location was

designed with safety in mind. Theentrance for the building is staffed witha screener to check the temperature ofevery patient and staffmember whoenters the building. The waiting spaceis vast to allow for social distancing, with minimal surfaces to minimize thespread of germs. All door handles arecovered with Nano Septic Continu-ously Self-Cleaning skins. The Cleveland Eye Clinic has seven

other existing locations: Avon, Beach-wood, Bedford, Brecksville, Cleveland,Elyria, and Lorain. The majority oftheir locations are offer traditionaleye care as well as a retail optical.
