Unto to Thee, oh Lord…

Psalm 25:1-3 states, “(A Psalm of David)- Unto

thee, O LORD, do I lift up my soul. O my God, I

trust in thee: let me not be ashamed, let not mine

enemies triumph over me. Yea, let none that wait

on thee be ashamed: let them be ashamed which

transgress without cause.” It is a fact that you

and I have been singing this portion of the 25th Psalm for many

years. It is a great source of encouragement. Let’s take a few

moments to explore this psalm further.

Notice some of the requests of David. In verses 4,5,6,7

and 20 , David pleads with God. He writes: show me, lead me,

remember, remember not, and deliver me. As David makes

these requests, he is showing the reader a contrast between

the king and the Lord. While David is the king of the land, God

is the King of Creation. God holds within His hand the authority

to regulate how mankind lives. David fully understands this

and says correct me to keep me holy in Your sight! What a

beautiful idea. May our prayer ever be: “Correct me to keep

my holy in Your sight!”

We need to understand WHO God will guide- the meek.

So often, we think that the words meek and weak are

interchangeable. They are not! Weak deals with physical

strength while meek deals mental toughness. The word

“meek” literally means “a tamed stallion.” That horse still has

the ability to knock us down and hurt us but the horse allows

the one with the reigns to dictate how he will act. The real

question is: “Who has my reigns?” Matthew 5:6- “Blessed are

the meek…”

Throughout this Psalm, David is consistently asking

God to forgive him and the nation of Israel. Think about his

mindset. Forgive me, first. Forgive us, secondly. David

understands that the changing of a nation begins with him. Not

because he is the king, but rather because he is a child of the

King! Real change to a nation happens when real change

happens in my life, then your life and then to others. If you

want to change the U. S., then change yourself to be more

faithful unto the Lord.

May God give us the courage to live the words we sing!
