Chapter I 1 1. Introduction: Polymer science is a macromolecular subject which is a part of material science. It is mostly concerned with polymers especially with synthetic ones. The field of polymer science includes researchers to deal with chemistry, physics and technology. The following are three main disciplines Polymer chemistry: o It is concerned with the chemical synthesis and chemical properties of polymers Polymer physics: o It deals with the bulk properties of polymer materials and engineering/technology applications Polymer characterization: o It is concerned with the analysis of chemical structure and morphology. o And also on the determination of physical properties in relation to compositional and structural parameters One of the major usages of polymer is in paints and coating industry. Nowadays, strict environmental regulation acts are challenging one for each coating formulators because they are not allowed to use any hazardous materials in their coating formulations. Chromate containing coatings, hazardous solvents and additives are almost banned in many countries. The regulations with respect to health and safety become first ever needed one. The current multilayer coating system is as follows First, One layer of chromate pigment containing coating should be applied which acts as corrosion resistant layer as well as adhesion promoting layer Secondly, primer Surfacer with higher thickness which is necessary to protect other environmental damages as well as filling layer imperfections Then followed by topcoat system which provides aesthetic as well as protective layer In order to overcome these issues several researchers and coating formulators are focusing on new technologies. In that, Nanotechnology is leading front and considered to be as future technology.
