HYMN TIS312

1. Once in royal David's city stood a lowly cattle shed, where a mother laid her baby in a manger for his bed: Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child.

2 He came down to earth from heaven, who is God and Lord of all, and his shelter was a stable, and his cradle was a stall; with the poor, despised and lowly, lived on earth our Saviour holy.

3 And, through all his wondrous childhood, day by day like us he grew;

he was little, weak, and helpless, tears and smiles like us he knew;

and he feels for all our sadness, and he shares in all our gladness.

4 And our eyes at last shall see him, through his own redeeming love; for that Child so dear and gentle

is our Lord in heaven above; and he leads his children on to the place where he is gone.

5 Not in that poor lowly stable, with the oxen standing by,

we shall see him; but in heaven, set at God's right hand on high; when his children gather round bright like stars, with glory crowned.

Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Blessed be God’s kingdom, now and for ever.

The Lord be with you And also with you

Almighty God , to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYER FOR CHRISTMAS EVE

Good and gracious God, who gave us your Son, the Lord of the universe, wrapped in swaddling clothes, the Saviour of all, lying in a manger: on this holy night draw us into the mystery of your love. Join our voices with the heavenly host that we may sing your glory on high. Give us a place among the shepherds that we may find the one for whom we have waited, Jesus Christ, the Messiah and Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. PRAYER FOR CHRISTMAS DAY

God Most High, whose eternal word chose a dwelling among us, that we might live in your presence: grant us a spirit of wisdom to know how rich is the glory you have given us, and how great is the hope to which we are called in the Word made flesh; who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen

LITURGY OF THE WORD

A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness-- on them light has shined. You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder. For the yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their op-pressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. For all the boots of the tramping warriors and all the garments rolled in blood shall be burned as fuel for the fire. For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace for the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time onward and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

(Isaiah 9. 2-7) For the Word of the Lord Thanks be to God.

All the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God

Sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvellous things. With his right hand and his holy arm has he won for himself the victory. R

The LORD has made known his victory; his righteousness has he openly shown in the sight of the nations. He remembers his mercy and faithfulness to the house of Israel and all the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God. R

Shout with joy to the LORD, all your lands; lift up your voice, rejoice and sing. Sing to the LORD with the harp, with the harp and the voice

of song. With trumpets and the sound of the horn shout with joy before the King, the LORD. R Let the sea make a noise and all that is in it, the lands and those who dwell therein. Let the rivers clap their hands; and let the hills ring out with joy before the LORD, when he comes to judge the earth. In righteousness shall he judge the world, and the peoples with equity. R

A Reading from the Letter of Paul to Titus

For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all, training us to renounce impiety and worldly passions, and in the present age to live lives that are self-controlled, upright, and godly, while we wait for the blessed hope and the manifestation of the glory of our great God and Saviour, Jesus Christ. He it is who gave himself for us that he might redeem us from all iniquity and purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds.

(Titus 2. 11-14)

A READING FROM THE HOLY GOSPEL ACCORDING TO LUKE

Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ.

In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.’ And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favours!’

(Luke 2. 1-14)

For the Gospel of the Lord Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

now you hear of endless bliss, Jesus Christ was born for this; he has opened heaven’s door and you are blest for evermore; Christ was born for this, Christ was born for this. 3. Good Christians all, rejoice with heart and soul and voice; now you need not fear the grave: Jesus Christ was born to save, calls you one and calls you all, to gain his everlasting hall; Christ was born to save, Christ was born to save.

Alleluia.

May the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, and the fullness of his message live within you.

A READING FROM THE HOLY GOSPEL ACCORDING TO JOHN

Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth.

(John 1. 1-14)

THE NICENE CREED Please Stand

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mar y

and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Churc h. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE CONFESSION
