Biographical Sketch Abstract: The items in this archive were held and organized byFrançoise des Varennes, adopted daughter of Henriette Renié. Renié was a world-famousFrench harpist whose efforts in composition, transcription, pedagogy and performancesignificantly influenced the development of the harp as a solo concert instrument.Renié’s music continues to be an active part of the harp repertoire, and her Méthode pourHarpe is still studied by top performers worldwide. Françoise des Varennes (Pignal) wasthe daughter of Marie-Amélie Pignal (Regnier), daughter of Renié’s life-long friendLouise Regnier. Des Varennes was a prolific poet, receiving Tri-Laureate honors fromthe Académie Française as a Knight of the Order of the Fine Arts and Bi-Laureate honorsfrom the Institut de France, for poetry. Des Varennes was active in presentingbiographical papers on Renié in Europe and the United States. In 1990 she wrote abiography of the composer and teacher entitled Henriette Renié: harpe vivante.

Scope and Content Abstract: This archive contains primarily documents used inpreparation for des Varennes’ biography of Renié. This includes handwritten and typedmanuscripts of the biography, but also contains thousands of primary source documentsbelonging to Renié herself. These items include correspondence, concert programs, newsclippings, financial documents, personal spiritual diaries, artwork, sound recordings,photos, etc.

PROVENANCE

The archive was acquired in July 2002 by David Day, curator of Brigham YoungUniversity’s Music Special Collections and the International Harp Archives, fromFrançoise des Varennes, through the intermediary of Jacqueline Lesprit-Maupin, hercaretaker. The archive was in part organized by des Varennes in preparation for thepublication of her biography on Renié. There are, however, a number of unorganizedmaterials included, which presumably des Varennes never viewed nor organized. MmeMaupin gave Renié’s autograph musical manuscripts (scores) to Xavier de Maistre.Addition of these scores to the archive, either in original or copy, is being pursued.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

At the age of five, Henriette Renié (1875, Paris--1956, Paris) knew exactly what shewanted out of life. After hearing Alphonse Hasselmanns perform in a concert in Nice in1880, she turned to her father and proclaimed, “That man is going to be my harpteacher.” (des Varennes, Living Harp, 26) Thus began the study and career of one of themost influential harpists of the last century.

A true child prodigy, in 1887 at age eleven Renié won the prestigious Premier Prix forharp at the Paris Conservatory. Entering the Paris Conservatory as a music student at agethirteen, Renié studied harmony and counterpoint, eventually composing 23 works, suchas Concerto en Ut Mineur, and Légende, which are still some of the most challengingpieces in the harp repertoire. She also produced 12 collections of transcriptions for soloharp and 96 transcriptions for harp ensembles. (des Varennes, Living Harp, 128-37)

While Renié played a pivotal role in the emergence of the harp as a solo instrument, shesaw herself more as an educator than as a composer or performer. Renié dedicated herlife to teaching others the harp. Her influential teaching, supported by her famousMéthode pour la harpe, has helped train some of the finest harpists of succeedinggenerations, including Susann McDonald, Mildred Dilling, Marcel Grandjany, CarlosSalzedo, and Sally Maxwell. Her vision as artist and teacher can be best expressed in herown words:

Ma vie est extérieure par definition, par nécessité, par obligation. Et cela depuissi longtemps!—Pout être une grande virtuose et une grande artiste, il faut sentirprofondément mais extérioriser ce que l’on senté il faut donner sans cesse;prendre contact avec les autres, faire vibrer les coeurs et les âmes à la rencontrede son coeur et de son âme, les uns et les autres mis en action par son art.–Mieux que cela peut-être? --Lorsqu’on paraît en public, il faut dans tout l’êtreune “harmonie” de laquelle se dégage une sorte de séduction, de charmeirresistible qui met l’âme de l’auditeur en état de sentir et de comprendre mieuxce qu’il resent lui-même. –Comme professeur, il faut aussi savoir s’extérioriser,se donner, chercher le point de contact, la “prise de courant” avec le coeur etl’esprit de l’élève! Et une fois trouvée, il faut lui envoyer cette électricité cachéequi met en mouvement ses puissances intellectuelles, spirituelles et sensitives. Làaussi, il faut charmer, capter, conquérir, soumettre, pour ensuite pétrir l’argile, leformer, et “éveiller son âme”, afin qu’il prenne connaissance de lui-même et soitproper à sentir le courant de l’Infini. Et depuis l’âge de 12 ans, c’est ma vie, àdes degrés divers, avec des transformations, des progrès; --mais c’est ma vie etmon devoir. (des Varennes, harpe vivante, 55-56)

My life is exterior by definition, by necessity, by obligation, and it has been for along time! - to be a great virtuoso and a great artist, one must feel deeply butexternalize what one feels; one must give without stopping; make contact withothers; make their hearts and souls resonate by their encounter with one’s ownheart and soul, all given by one’s art. --More than that, perhaps? --When oneappears in public, one’s entire being must be filled with a “harmony” whichemanates a kind of enchantment, an irresistible charm that makes the listenerperceive and understand his own feelings better. – As a teacher, one must alsounderstand how to externalize and give of oneself, how to find the point ofcontact, the “electric connection” with the heart and spirit of the student, and oncethat is found, one must transmit to him that hidden current which sets hisintellectual, spiritual and emotional powers in motion. Here also one must charm,

captivate and conquer, so that one can mold the clay, form it, and “awaken thesoul”, in order that the student understands himself and is then prepared to feel thecurrent of the Infinite…. And since the age of twelve, this has been, unvarying,my life—with some transformations, some progress—but it has been my life andmy duty. (des Varennes, Living Harp, 75-76)

Renié did not slow down with age. On the contrary, she continued to perform for friendsand students despite persistent health problems until about six months before her death on1 March 1956. She even gave a series of interviews and performances on Radio-Genèvein September 1955 (included in the archive). A recipient of the prestigious Legion ofHonor, Renié was one of the first women to receive such distinction. More importantthan her honors, however, Renié dedicated her life to helping those in need. Havingnever married, Renié housed and cared for her mother Gabrielle, brother François, bestfriend Louise Regnier, and Regnier’s granddaughter Françoise Pignal des Varennes. Shehelped set up the Petite Caisse des Artistes, a non-profit organization dedicated toanonymously helping struggling musicians and artists.

Performer, composer, arranger, and lifetime teacher, Renié shared her musical geniuswith the world in a time when a woman’s role in society seldom extended beyond that ofwife and mother. Renié was a true pioneer in the world of harp, and part of a growinggroup of talented woman composers and performers making their mark on music andculture in the early twentieth century. Gaining the respect of the likes of Gabriel Fauré,Claude Debussy, Théodore Dubois, Jules Massenet, Camille Saint-Säens, and others, thegrandeur of Renié’s determination and spirit helped the music world to reconsider itsconception of gender and musical genius.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Henriette Renié and Françoise des Varennes Papers contain personal items originallybelonging to Renié, and arranged and used by des Varennes for her biography, as well ashandwritten and typed documents created by des Varennes in preparing the biography.The items found within the archive range mostly from Renié’s lifetime (1875-1956),although there are many materials collected by des Varennes about Renié that pertainingto her biography extending up to 1994.

Generally, the materials contained in the archive include:• Photographs, negatives, and slides• Correspondence between Renié, des Varennes, and many family and friends;• Handwritten transcripts and documents in both Renié’s and des Varennes’ hand• Typed manuscripts and documents pertaining to des Varennes’ biography and

other materials for speeches made about Renié• Renié’s daily spiritual diaries• Concert programs• Published items such as journal articles, news clippings, pamphlets, books, etc.• Official documents (financial, organizational, contractual, etc.) pertaining to

Renié and the political and professional groups and associations of which she wasa part

• Original artwork, mostly by unknown artists, possibly Renié herself, desVarennes, or a friend or family member

• Photocopies of pertinent information for the biography, as well as a photocopy ofthree of Renié’s autograph scores

• Limited miscellaneous personal artifacts, including hairpins, a pair of pince-nezbelonging to Renié, a piece of wallpaper from an apartment, envelopes containinghair from deceased friends, etc.

The archive’s strength is in the correspondence and personal diaries of Renié. There areover 4,300 letters and over 15,000 pages of spiritual diary entries, which may provide theresearcher insight into the thoughts and life experiences that molded the compositionalchoices, pedagogy, and personal decisions of this famous harpist. The archive alsocontains over 800 photos of Renié and her friends and family, many of which (to date)have never been published.

Researchers interested in the production of des Varennes’ biography of Renié will findmost, if not all, of her original handwritten and typed manuscripts. It seems that desVarennes was contemplating a much larger biography than what was eventuallypublished. Her files of important primary source documents for her research are arranged

in chronological order. She also typed many of Renié’s important spiritual diary entriesand correspondence with major musical figures; this information was not published.

The most significant lacuna of the archive is its lack of Renié’s autograph musicalmanuscripts. These were given by Mme Lesprit-Maupin to Xavier de Maistre.Restoration of these scores to the archive, either originals or copies, is currently beingpursued.

NOTES ON ARRANGEMENT

The items in the archive were arranged by Françoise des Varennes as she preparedmaterials for a biography of Henriette Renié. For the most part, des Varennes did notseparate letters from photos, magazines from news clippings, etc., but arranged them byyear or by association with like materials. For example, the chronological folders inSeries II contain various items from the year corresponding to the hanging folder label.In other parts of the archive, however, items are grouped together by type, spanning anindiscriminate number of years.

In order to maintain provenance, the items in the archive have been stored “as-is” asmuch as possible. Packets of items found together have been preserved together infolders, and have maintained order in which they were found. The container list accountsfor items found imbedded in multiple layers of folders by use of terraced outline form.Folder titles correspond to the titles given them by des Varennes, in the language inwhich they were written (titles are demarcated by quotation marks). Packets of materialsthat were not organized by des Varennes into folders bear no titles, thereby distinguishingmaterials organized and titled by des Varennes from materials she may have never evenreviewed.

Since des Varennes’ organization of materials was arbitrary, the researcher requiresassistance to identify and retrieve items in the archive conveniently. To aid in thisretrieval, the container list has been color-coded according to item type. The colors andtheir corresponding item group can be found below:

In order to conserve space, Henriette Renié’s name has been abbreviated to “H.R”. in thecontainer list. Similarly, Gabrielle Renié (H.R.’s mother) has been abbreviated to“G.R.”, and Françoise des Varennes to “d.V.”

The following is a short synopsis of the contents of each series in the archive:

SERIES I--ITEMS ARRANGED BY DES VARENNES FOR RENIÉ BIOGRAPHY,PT. 1

• 1875-1988• 8 archival storage containers; 35 folders• Large folders prepared by des Varennes to house typed manuscripts for her

biography, the folders correspond to chapter titles for her book. Folders alsoinclude photos presumably intended for inclusion in the biography, as well asselected spiritual diary entries and periodical articles written about Renié.

• Folders are in the order in which they were found. The original order of itemswithin folders has also been maintained.

SERIES II--ITEMS ARRANGED BY DES VARENNES FOR RENIÉ BIOGRAPHY,PT. 2

• 1881-1994• 22 archival storage containers; 188 folders• Folders prepared by des Varennes to house primary source documents and

personal items for the Renié biography. This series has a large amount ofcorrespondence, but also a goodly number of concert programs, manuscripts,published items and documents, mostly arranged either by date or by group.

• Folders were originally arranged in a hanging file. While about half of thesefolders were arranged by date from 1884-1956, the other half were in noparticular order when they arrived at BYU. Therefore, the archivist has arrangedthese folders in a manner that couples items of similar type in close proximity tofolders with other similar materials. The original order of items within folders hasnevertheless been maintained.

SERIES III--ITEMS APPARENTLY GROUPED BY DES VARENNES, BUTRECEIVED UNORGANIZED

• 1876-1974• 23 archival storage containers; 63 folders• Items either found together with no covering, tied together with twine, placed in

an untitled folder, or found separate from any similar items. This series containsthe largest amount of correspondence of any series in the archive, many of whichwere written by famous composers and musicians to Renié. There are also a largenumber of photographs, and many of Renié’s spiritual diary entries, which werewritten on small pieces of paper (which differ from the spiritual diary carnets inSeries IV).

• The archivist placed items found bundled in a group together in folders. Mostfolders lack a title, reflecting the state in which the archivist found them, so as to

distinguish their level of organization from folders titled by des Varennes.Folders were arranged to place items of similar types of items in close proximityto each other. The original order of items within folders has been maintained.

SERIES IV--RENIÉ'S SPIRITUAL DIARIES• 1897-1956, 1972• 5 archival storage containers; 21 folders• Handwritten diary carnets written by Renié as daily spiritual reflections and notes

from Catholic Mass sermons, which she attended daily. They are chronologicallyarranged, and mark a period between 1897 to the end of her life in 1956. Spiritualdiary entries written on small pieces of paper rather than in these carnets can befound in Series I-III, filling in some of the time periods for which there is not acarnet.

• The archivist placed carnets in folders as a means to store the carnets inchronological order.

SERIES V--AUDIO MATERIALS• 1827-1958• 3 archival storage containers; 22 folders• Professional and private audio recordings of Renié’s compositions, played by the

composer. Professional recordings are from Columbia and Odéon, 78 rpm discs,with many duplicates. The series also contains a collection of Renié’s privaterecordings on 78 rpm discs, with many duplicates. Included are three metal discmatrices used as masters for the production of copies of the private recordings.Also included are two magnetic tape reels with music from the Columbia andOdéon recordings.

Folders were organized by the archivist in order of recording number. Duplicaterecordings were arranged in the same folders as their copies. These audio materials were

found together, but not arranged by des Varennes according to number or title.
