Objectives• To identify the location of the equator, Arctic

Circle, Antarctic Circle, North Pole, South Pole, Prime Meridian, the tropics and the hemispheres on maps and globes.– Equator– Arctic Circle– Antarctic Circle– North Pole– South Pole– Prime Meridian– Tropic of Cancer– Tropic of Capricorn– Northern Hemisphere– Southern Hemisphere

3

Equator

• The equator is an imaginary line that circles around the middle of the earth.

• This line separates the earth in half from the North Pole to the South Pole.

Page 4: 1 Earth. 2 Objectives To identify the location of the equator, Arctic Circle, Antarctic Circle, North Pole, South Pole, Prime Meridian, the tropics and

4

Arctic Circle

• The arctic circle is an imaginary line which marks where once a year there is 1 sunlit day

Page 5: 1 Earth. 2 Objectives To identify the location of the equator, Arctic Circle, Antarctic Circle, North Pole, South Pole, Prime Meridian, the tropics and

5

Antarctic Circle

• The antarctic circle is an imaginary line which marks where there is one whole day during which the sun does not set, and one whole day in which the sun does not rise.

6

North Pole

• The North Pole• is the northern

point on Earth

North Pole

7

South Pole

• The South Pole• is the southern

point on Earth

South Pole

Page 8: 1 Earth. 2 Objectives To identify the location of the equator, Arctic Circle, Antarctic Circle, North Pole, South Pole, Prime Meridian, the tropics and

8

Prime Meridian

• This imaginary line separates the East and the West side of the Earth

• zero degree (0°) longitude

Page 9: 1 Earth. 2 Objectives To identify the location of the equator, Arctic Circle, Antarctic Circle, North Pole, South Pole, Prime Meridian, the tropics and

9

Tropic of Cancer

• This parallel line marks the farthest point north at which the sun can be seen directly overhead at noon

Page 10: 1 Earth. 2 Objectives To identify the location of the equator, Arctic Circle, Antarctic Circle, North Pole, South Pole, Prime Meridian, the tropics and

10

Tropic of Capricorn

• This parallel line marks the farthest point south at which the sun can be seen directly overhead at noon

11

Northern Hemisphere

• The northern hemisphere half of Earth that is above the equator.

• Contains more land and less ocean

Equator

The part of the earth above the equator is

called what?

12

Southern Hemisphere

• The southern hemisphere is the half of Earth that is below the equator.

• Contains more ocean and less land

• Less pollution
