A hackathon (also known as a hack day, hackfest or codefest) is an event in which computer programmers and
others involved in soMware development, including graphic designers, interface designers and project managers, collaborate intensively on soMware projects.[1] Occasionally,
there is a hardware component as well. Hackathons typically last between a day and a
week. The word "hackathon" is a portmanteau of the words "hack" and "marathon", where "hack"
is used in the sense of playful, exploratory programming, not its alternate meaning as a reference to computer
crime. Hackathons typically start with one or more presenta6ons about the event, as well as about the specific subject, if any. Then par6cipants suggest ideas and form teams, based on individual interests
and skills.
