Page 8: 1 Brochure Plac13

Goa Institute of Management (GIM) is committed to train and prepare the students in the diversified functional fields of business management. In addition to the rigorous academic schedule, each student undertakes industrial internships to complement theory with practice. Students get meaningful insights into the corporate world through panel discussions; forums; weekend projects; alumni interactions; corporate social responsibility projects. The uniqueness of GIM is in providing flexibility for the students to specialise in their area of interest by offering a wide range of electives to fulfil the student’s aspirations. GIM fully understands the corporate’s need of the hour. Its Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) programme has constantly evolved to meet the diversified needs of various sectors. PGDM batch of 2012-14 is a right blend of students of diverse talents with varied backgrounds. They possess the conviction and commitment to leave their imprints wherever they serve. I am sure that this batch of young professionals will stand out with panache for excellence and leadership. On behalf of GIM, I take this opportunity to thank the corporate fraternity for collaborating with us over the years. I extend a warm welcome to you for Campus Placements 2014. Dr N. Sambandam

MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

The Class of 2014 truly represents the diversity of India in terms of both geography and culture. The students bring to the table a rich mix of academic backgrounds, work experience and innate talent.I believe that the education imparted to the students at GIM equips them to take up positions of responsibility in the corporate sector and discharge their duties with a high level of expertise, commitment and integrity. This is largely due to an outstanding faculty, many of whom have vast corporate experience and bring a level of pragmatism and relevance to classroom teaching. What distinguishes us from other business schools is a focussed approach to social responsibility as is evidenced by the CSR projects undertaken by our students, and an inculcation of ethical values which runs as a common thread across all our courses. We had a very successful placement season for last year’s batch and I am confident that we will repeat the performance in 2014.

My experience at GIM was amazing. The core of the program offers a pleasing balance between case-based and traditional lecture teaching modalities. Everyone came from a different background and what I realized that the competition this time was different as everyone’s resume had lot of achievements and most of them were in top 10% in their previous college. The heterogeneity of the group added very different color in terms of thought process, interactions & approach. I believe the best part for me was a bouquet approach for electives that GIM offers…pick any elective from any stream based on interest…I ended up taking different electives in Marketing, Finance & HR and I believe for me it was real general management as opposed to a particular specialization which I really think is one of the best thing as an HR professional. The GIM program not only provides the right academic foundation to succeed, but also relevant practical experience through the various practical classes and projects and industry interaction.

Perry C GoesUnited Breweries Ltd.Senior Vice President -- Strategic Planning & Business AnalysisGIM: 1993-1995

I came to GIM in 1993 after having worked in industry for 6 years.

I was therefore looking for something that did not just simply

confer an academic qualification, but provided management

education to round off my technical expertise and experience.

Two decades later, I am still happy to report that GIM met

my needs completely. As it was the first batch, where forget

infrastructure, we did not even have a campus, we learnt to do

well with what we had. The pedagogy prepared us for the real

world of managers. We learnt that something done perfectly but

late was worth less than something done on time laddered grade

points cut for late submissions ensured that. We learnt to live

with discipline (the classroom doors would shut 30 seconds after

schedule lecture commencement times) and yet work on non-

structured problems. We had quizzes on topics not just from text

books but more so from the real news (Economic Times that was

delivered to Goa a day later than the rest of the country), so we

learnt how to apply what we learnt in theory to actual business

situations (that was reported in the news, as against contrived

cases). We learnt to go out on our own, stand on our feet, and

be confident in our training and ourselves. Looking back over

these two decades, having had the experience of having met and

worked with people from different management institutions from

across the world, I am pleased to say the my stint at GIM provided

me a sound grounding, and that I am proud to be an alumni of

Goa Institute of Management.

WHY GIM?

GIM is special in its own way. It’s not only about studies, it’s about making great friends, discussing the universe to economics at midnight, submitting projects just before deadline and yes Goa the most amazing place in the world. When you come out of college it is a great experience when you find that your college holds a prestigious place in the corporate world. As one of the HR recently told me, GIM instils a sense of excellence into their students” and hence he was confident that as a GIMite I would do the same.

Most of us have learnt to live with the ubiquitous question, “How did you guys manage to study in Goa?” Well the answer is, between our many late night case study discussions, perpetual sleepless nights on account of project deadlines and our secret meetings to discuss what feature-benefit we would use to ‘Sell a Pal’ at the upcoming marketing contest by Mecca (our marketing club), we still always managed to find time to enjoy the sights of the beautiful Mandovi river across the road or a scenic ferry ride across it. Basically, we learnt to make the most of the resources available to us. Wait!! Isn’t that what management is all about?

Some of the prominent speakers include Mr Anil Agarwal, Dr Kiran Bedi, Mr Jamshyd Godrej, Mr Ash Ranjan, Mr Ronnie Screwvala and many more.

Page 16: 1 Brochure Plac13

The two years I spent at GIM have played a big role in developing my managerial skills making me far more effective in my professional life. Eminent personalities addressing us through events organised by Ribandar Talks, enabled us to gain insights to specific industries and sectors. Organising large scale events like WizBiz and Samriddhi ensured that all of us got hands-on experience in executing projects with tight deadlines.

FINANCEThe teaching & interaction with the faculty was great and done in such a non-formal manner that there was no stress on the non-essentials and only on the learning part.

The case studies and the quizzes were great way to keep all the students on their toes and we really enjoyed the experience.

This club is one of the oldest of its kind. Over the years it has constantly improved its offerings & activities with the sole motto of holistic development of PGDM students on campus, with a focus on people management.

Courses Faculty

In terms of the learning, the experiences shared by the faculty were really relevant to what we see in the industry today.

Also, how much ever we used to criticize the big case studies; some of them were really helpful in making us understand the actual situations in the industry. I feel the biggest take away for me from GIM was the ability to understand people and manage different people in different situations. From being critics and helping each other during the pre-placement practice Gd sessions to being competitors in the actual process, people show various behavioural traits.

The marketing inveterate of GIM is responsible for the dissemination of marketing concepts through competitive events. MECCA’s activities also include interactions with individuals from the marketing field from the industry and group discussions on evolving marketing trends

Courses Faculty

The experience of my 2 years at GIM was life altering.

For me, the first experience of corporate life happened here. The pedagogy was a good mix of practical and theoretical aspects. My area of interest was marketing, and together with a few like-minded people like Mainak Chakravarty, Chetan Ghadge, Aruni Ghosh, Jason Rego, Jaideep Kumar, Girish Nair amongst others we laid the foundations for GIM - Marketing MECCA (and even developed a logo for it). The vision of MECCA was to bring together people with a passion for marketing, market Research and sales. At MECCA we also decided that we will have some activities that would establish GIM prominently. ‘Wizards of Biz (now known as WizBiz)’ was one such initiative which we took out from the college campus to the corporates.

The progress of GIM over last 10 years makes me extremely proud.

GIM was a life changing experience and highly qualified experienced faculty coupled with a great campus environment made my 2 years at GIM unforgettable. The curriculum facilitates all-round development, and opportunity to interact with a vast cross section of peer group is an invaluable experience. What drew me towards GIM was the repute it was gaining in the academic circle.

At that time, we didn’t have the infrastructure or resources we could boast about, but we always felt a cut above the rest. The pedagogy employed by the director and the faculty not only inculcated real-world managerial skills also at the same time fostered free-thinking & entrepreneurial culture. In the last 17 years, I have visited the old campus at Ribandar as well as the sprawling new campus at Sanquelim several times. I have seen the college improve not just in terms of infrastructure and resources but also in terms of the quality of students. The students today are more independent and industry-ready than ever.

We had the option of picking courses of independent study based on our liking, which in turn fuelled deeper learning. With the institute in a start-up mode then, the entrepreneurial and open culture espoused by the then director & founding faculty ensured that we learnt by practice, examples and real-world experience in each and every course that was offered. The entire pedagogy made sure that we tested out our hypotheses in each case/problem, pulled the feedback into the thought process and came up with practical solutions.

We wake up to the sound of birds chirping and people scrambling to put their things and selves together for lectures. The picturesque view of lush verdure greets our blurry eyes and energises us for an action packed day.

No MBA class is complete without presentations as we try to enthral the class with our strategic ideas, marketing plans, HR jargons and mind boggling numbers, our peers simultaneously try to get the better of us by throwing the same back at us. Class participation at its best!

The football field/basketball and badminton courts/ swimming pool/ gym beckons! What’s life on campus without indulging in some friendly but competitive sport! Of course some of us prefer to sweat it out in the gym. Along with the mind, the body too needs to be exercised!

In between lectures we rush to our in-house tea stall (read: vending machine) at Jaggu’s. One has come to wonder if one is propelled to him purely by habit or the actual need to have some sumptuous machine tea/coffee/soup.

As the lectures draw to an end there is a palpable buzz on the campus about the ‘biggie’ from the corporate world who’s been invited by good ol’ Ribandar Talks to engage with the students and provide insights into the world we all eagerly await to step into.

8.45 a.m. 1.30 p.m. 5.30 p.m.10.00 a.m. 4.00 p.m.Post dinner we sit down with our teams and get our minds together to crack a National level case study. That’s where the real learning happens, isn’t it?

done with assignments? Yep! Sleep? No way! Let’s get those guitars, and drums to dish out a good old folk song or the latest chartbuster. A great accompaniment is a chorus of vocal chords that don’t restrict themselves to the bathroom!

That part of the day where the quizmasters don their hats, wield their quiz cards and fire away questions to participating teams, a la derek O’Brien.

And of course, that part of the night which is spent on the truck load of assignments that awaits us in our mailbox. There’s never getting away from this!

And finally we call it a day, and we catch our forty winks worth of sleep!

While curriculum, infrastructure and faculty are areas of strength for all the top business schools, what sets the GIM experience apart is the culture. The fact that you are not spoon fed and asked to work on projects and assignments on your own goes a long way in helping you mature as a professional in those two years. The rigour of the residential program with work happening around the clock also prepares you well for the industry.

Final Placements

Lateral PlacementsLateral placements for the batch of 2013 are a rolling process that would be conducted prior to the placement week. Companies may shortlist candidates from the batch profile and submit the same to the placement cell.

Pre-placement talks: A pre-placement talk provides companies with an opportunity to increase their visibility on campus. The company also gets a chance to interact with prospective employees, as well as throw light on various aspects of profiles being offered by them.

Placement week guidelines: A company interested in participating in the final placement process must register with the placement cell. The company must indicate their preferred dates for the pre-placement talks and final interview at the time of the registration. GIM will then assign and confirm the campus interview dates for the registered companies.

Allotment of slots: A company will be given a slot of 8 hours on a day. The allotment of the day and slot shall be done on the basis of the following parameters:

• Batch feedback• Past relationship with GIM• Company reputation• Salary offered• Job profile• No of positions on offer

PLACEMENT PROCESSSummer PlacementsAs part of the curriculum, each student takes up live projects with a company for a period of 8-10 weeks, after the completion of the first year.

Summer internship policy: A student can apply to any number of companies. Once an offer has been made, the student has to accept that offer. Students cannot withdraw from the selection process of a company once applied to. However in the event that student has received an offer in another company, before the result of the current process is announced; they will have to accept the offer that was made first.

Pre-placement offers: Pre-placement offers made by the company are to be routed through the placement cell. Any company keen on making a PPO may get in touch with the placement cell.

Communication of offers: All final offers made to successful candidates are to be communicated through the placement cell only.
