Applies to the control of energy during servicing and/or maintenance of machines and equipment.

Conditions Requiring Lockout/Tagout Procedures
Unexpected energizing or start-up of machinery or equipment.
Potential release of hazardous energy.
Confined spaces or adjacent areas.

Lockout/Tagout
Modifications of machinery after January 2, 1990.

Terminology
Authorized Employee - A person who implements lockout/tagout procedures.
Affected Employee - An employee who operates or uses equipment and machinery.

Terminology
Energy isolating device - A device which prevents the transmission or release of energy.
Energy source - Any source of electrical mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, chemical, thermal or other energy source.

Terminology
Lockout The placement of a lockout device on an
energy isolating device.
Lockout device A device used to hold an energy
isolating device in a safe position.

Tagout The placement of a tagout device on an
energy isolating device.
Tagout device A prominent warning device, such as a
tag.

Lockout/Tagout
If energy isolating devices are unable to be locked out, a tagout device must be utilized.
If energy isolating devices are capable of being locked out, a lockout device must be used.

Tagout devices shall clearly indicate the prohibited use of the energy isolating device(s).
