From nature itself and Aboriginal culture to marks of European settlement, heritage is a star attraction of the region.

Six Aboriginal language groups treasure connections with this land — Darug, Gundungurra, Dharawal, Darkinjung, Wanaruah and Wiradjuri. Gain an insight into the world’s oldest culture by learning about the Dreamtime from rock art or an Aboriginal guide.

Learn about pioneering European settlers, walk roads and bridges first carved from the bush by convict labour; amble along some of the oldest bush tracks in Australia in the birthplace of the country’s conservation movement; and stroll along the Corridor of Oaks where past Prime Ministers have each planted an oak tree.

See remnants of the industrial age and soak up the opulent essence still found at numerous grand hotels, guesthouses, restaurants and cafes which make up one of Australia’s first tourist destinations.

Visitors can experience history through diverse experiences — from prehistoric trees, Aboriginal culture and Jenolan Caves to convict-built roads, industrial age remnants and some of the most iconic man-made landmarks and attractions in the land including Scenic World, the Hydro Majestic and Carrington hotels.

Also join the Blue Mountains Crossings Bicentenary 2013–2015 to mark the first recognised European crossing of the Blue Mountains.

Home to one of the most famous landmarks on the planet (the Three Sisters), the Blue Mountains is a special place of ancient landscapes, towering golden escarpments, crashing waterfalls and magnificent eucalypts all set among breathtaking panoramas.

Just 100km from Sydney, the area is inscribed on the World Heritage list for its outstanding universal values.

Australia’s “cradle of conservation” is renowned for its bushwalking and inspiring landscapes.

The Blue Mountains is home to the Darug and Gundungurra Aboriginal peoples who treasure their connections with the land, encapsulated in stories and art, ceremony and song as well as knowledge of landforms, climate, plants and animal life.

Set within this natural wonderland, Blue Mountains City is the only proclaimed city in the world located in a World Heritage area. The charming collection of mountain villages and hamlets is home to 75,000 people.

With so much to see and do in the Blue Mountains, staying at least one night is a must.

Create an unforgettable multi- day escape with world-class nature, cultural, historical, lifestyle and adventure activities and experiences including the world’s steepest railway at Scenic World; the National Trust property Everglades Historic House and Gardens; the new Blue Mountains Cultural Centre; and outdoor experts eager to share an adventure.

The past is always near in the Blue Mountains. The area is rich in history and has plenty of places where you can learn about it, re-experience it or re-visit it.

Travel back in time and gain an insight into the world’s oldest culture by learning about the Dreamtime from rock art or an Aboriginal guide.

Visit the Corridor of Oaks at Faulconbridge where every Australian Prime Minister or a family representative has planted a tree, learn about railway history at Valley Heights Locomotive Depot Heritage Museum or visit Mount York where an obelisk and monument to explorers Blaxland, Lawson and Wentworth can be found.

Once considered an impassable barrier, the mountains were crossed by the explorers in 1813, opening up the western plains to farming and settlement. Visit the many remaining heritage remnants or learn about history at a museum.

Visitors can re-live the ages through diverse experience — from rare flora and Aboriginal culture to convict-built roads, historic walking tracks, heritage gardens and some of the most iconic man-made landmarks and attractions in the land including Scenic World and the Hydro Majestic and Carrington hotels.

Also join the Blue Mountains Crossings Bicentenary 2013– 2015 to mark the first recognised European crossing of the Blue Mountains.

On the western fringe of the Blue Mountains, just two hours from Sydney and the gateway to the Central West, the Lithgow area is the perfect getaway.

Within minutes of the city itself, walk through historic villages, visit spectacular lookouts, sit beside clear flowing creeks and discover the many beautiful valleys that dominate the region.

From six-star luxury with all the frills to camping with all the thrills, Lithgow is surprisingly diverse.

Best known for its industrial heritage, Lithgow is also an exquisite area boasting seven national parks and rare flora and fauna.

Explore the Capertee Valley and Mudgee to the north, Jenolan Caves and Oberon to the south, Bathurst to the west and the Blue Mountains and Sydney to the east.

Stay a few days and explore the Lithgow area itself. It’s surprisingly close, surprisingly interesting and surprisingly spectacular.

It is surprisingly easy to create a multi-day getaway in the Lithgow area.

Step out on a multi-day bushwalk in the Wollemi wilderness or go 4WD touring through state forests and national parks.

Try your hand at fishing on three different lakes; discover signs of yesteryear at Portland and gaze at the valleys, villages and views from Hassans Walls and Pearsons lookouts or Wolgan Gap.

With seven national parks, sandstone escarpments, bush trails and waterways the Lithgow area is a paradise for the outdoor enthusiast. Discover breathtaking landscapes, cascading waterfalls and an abundance of flora and fauna on every track.

There are bushwalks suitable for all ages and fitness levels, from short strolls to challenging multi-day hikes, creeks in which to dip your feet and cliffs to climb.

Home to the largest national park in NSW (the Wollemi) and the “living dinosaur” (the Wollemi pine), the Lithgow area also boasts the Capertee Valley, the second largest canyon in the world, and beehive-like “pagoda” rock formations at the famous Gardens of Stone.

The area has long been a favourite for birdwatchers, who are rewarded with glimpses of rare and endangered species, and 4WDers spoilt for choice with opportunities to test the muscle of their vehicles.

From self-drive tours through glorious countryside, the highest lookout in the Blue Mountains, walks through magnificent bush to adventures with guides and gorgeous gardens, Lithgow has something for everyone.

It is one of the closest areas to Sydney with 4WD access to national parks and the Capertee Valley (the largest enclosed valley in Australia) is identified as an International Birding Association important birding area.

Like the modern city it has become, Lithgow’s heritage is rich and diverse, stretching back into prehistory and spanning the culture and spirit of Australia’s first people, the courage and determination of European settlers and the innovation of industry.

The traditional home of the Wiradjuri people, the area has many Aboriginal historic sites and is home to one of the oldest plant species on the planet, the Wollemi pine.

Named in 1827, the valley’s first European settlers arrived in 1824, although it was not until the western railway line snaked to Lithgow in 1869 that the town prospered.

Lithgow soon sported a commercial coal mine, pig iron manufacturing blast furnace, copper smelting, breweries, brickworks, pipe and pottery works, meat refrigeration and, after World War II, a power generating plant at Wallerawang.

Many historic remnants can still be seen there today.

Gain understanding of the region’s spiritual culture at Mayiny-gumarra-gu (Blackfellows Hands) natural rock art gallery and learn about colonial justice at the Hartley Historic Site.

The Small Arms Museum and Turon Technology Museum, the abandoned oil shale town of Newnes, the towering ruins of Lithgow Blast Furnace and the poppet head towers above the State Mine Heritage Park are legacies of Lithgow’s industrial and manufacturing heritage.

When it comes to entertainment, events and festivals, Lithgow has a surprisingly diverse array of activities.

After all, where else can you see international jousting, watch Australia’s richest female footrace or put your 4WD through its paces — all in one destination?

Large and small events and festivals of local, national and international significance are held in the area, and annual events such as mountain bike challenges, 4WD challenges, two agricultural shows set Lithgow apart.

Take your pick from art exhibitions, Scottish ceilidhs, educational exhibitions at Blue Mountains Botanic Garden at Mount Tomah, speedway action at Cullen Bullen Raceway, sailing regattas, marathons through wilderness areas, musical performances and sing-a-longs and spectacular Christmas lighting displays at local icons.

With enviable outdoor recreation areas including state forests, well-appointed showgrounds, parks and ovals, the Lithgow area is an ideal location host for large events.

There’s always something to see and do in Lithgow no matter what time of year you visit.

Be amazed at the masses of flower colour at the annual Daffodils at Rydal.

Watch the fastest girls on the track at the Lithgow Flash Carnival.

The highest town in the Blue Mountains region, Oberon is the perfect place to relax and recharge.

A unique combination of national parks, state forests and rolling hills, Oberon is a popular area for trout fishing, sapphire fossicking, mushroom picking, truffle hunting, horse riding, 4WDing, caving, mountain biking and bushwalking.

Just 30km from Jenolan, Australia’s most spectacular and famous cave system, Oberon supports a strong rural community producing lambs, beef cattle and a wide range of vegetables. It is particularly delightful in spring, when the appearance of bulbs and colourful wildflowers joyfully greet the season.

European settlement began along the Fish River after the discovery of gold in 1823. The town was first known as Bullock Flats, although it became Oberon when it was proclaimed a village in 1863.

With clean air, little traffic, country lifestyle and crisp alpine climate, Oberon and surrounds is an ideal place to explore while recharging your reserves away from the clutter of city and suburban life.

An array of outdoor nature- based activities introduce visitors to the splendid rolling hills, forests, caves and bush landscape, while a selection of accommodation and dining options cater for every taste and budget.

With vast open spaces, rolling hills, state forests and national parks, Oberon has everything for nature lovers.

Experience the spectacular wilderness areas of the World Heritage area. Take to the road at a leisurely pace on a self- drive tour, stopping at the many sights and attractions along the route. For extra thrills, leave the beaten track and the crowds in a 4WD and experience the grand surrounds from a perspective very few others see.

Explore the area on horseback. Ride beneath the cooling pine forests. Marvel at unspoilt bushland. Gaze into a crystal clear creek. Breathe the crisp fresh alpine air. Delight in winter snow.

Discover the wonders of an underground world. Drop a line (or your toes) into a river or creek. Pull on your walking boots and take to a track. Fossick for sapphires or forage for mushrooms or truffles.

Be awestruck by the wonder of Australia’s most breathtaking cave system, Jenolan Caves. Friendly guides will show you through a choice of many amazing caves and unforgettable underground experiences.

Lake Oberon and the rivers and creeks in the area are a must for the keen angler, while places such as Evans Crown Nature Reserve and Kanangra Walls offer relaxing and challenging walks for all fitness levels.

Along with Darug, Gundungurra and Wiradjuri Aboriginal people, Oberon was visited by explorers, stock keepers and free settlers in the early 19th century, and from 1818 settlers began grazing stock or growing vegetables and fruits in the area.

Proclaimed in 1863, the town will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2013.

The area is best known for the Jenolan Caves. For thousands of years, Aboriginal people carried their sick to the caves, believing the water had curative powers. In 1838, local folklore has it that bushranger James McKeown used them as a hideout, leading to European discovery and exploration.

Each surrounding village of Oberon also has a story to tell. Check out the remains of the old Burraga Copper mine, the flour mill museum at Rockley, the historic villages of O’Connell and Tarna, the cemetery at Black Springs and the Oberon Tarana Heritage Railway.

Heritage abounds in Oberon and surrounds, from the swaths of land that was home to the world’s oldest culture to locations discovered by early European explorers and the many historic buildings which dot the landscape.

Visit Evans Head Lookout in the spectacular Kanangra- Boyd National Park. Take a trip to the historic silver mining ghost town of Yerranderie. Hear stories about early pioneers and explorers at Jenolan Caves.

Oberon has an active cultural community which embraces arts, crafts, music, drama and events, many inspired by the splendid landscape and heritage and influenced by the climate and seasons of the area.

It is the location of one of the world’s largest privately-owned cool climate gardens, Mayfield Garden, an evolving majestic landscape within a 2000ha working farm.

Spend your day discovering historic treasures, wandering brilliant gardens and stocking up on unique arts, crafts and gifts.

Sip and sup your way around the area at the many cafes and restaurants, and pick up fresh local produce to savour later.
