New Delhi: Congress MPs forcedthe leadership to raise the issue of “political vendetta” in Parliament, alleging that the complaint in theNational Herald case through Sub-ramanian Swamy was indicativeof more “dirty tricks” on their way.
As Congress members from thetwo Houses of Parliament met inthe presence of supremo SoniaGandhi on Tuesday morning, itwas suggested that the party stepup protests against Union ministerV K Singh for his “dog” remark al-legedly about Dalits. But other MPsmoved in with alacrity to red-flag thesuggestion. Senior member AmbikaSoni said Congress should protestabout the National Herald complaintby flagging it as political retributionon the part of BJP. She was backed byDeepender Hooda. As a vote of sortswas sought on what should be theday’s agenda, members unanimous-ly plumped for protest on “vendetta”.
An MP underlined that even if theproceedings were obstructed on V KSingh’s “dog” comment, BJP wouldaccuse Congress of using it as a cov-er to retaliate against the govern-ment on National Herald summons.“So, we should raise the issue of po-litical vendetta without reserva-tions,” an MP said.
With the strategy meet mean-dering along, MP Kumari Selja de-manded that the party pu t an end to
the cogitation with the one-pointagenda that “political vendetta”was the core concern.
A member cautioned that theparty should steer clear of the
judge or the judiciary while criti-cising the government.
Some members said Swamy’spresence in the case should not beseen as incidental since “he is closeto RSS”, suggesting a “larger gameplan” to put Congress and theGandhi family off balance.

New Delhi: BJP on Tuesday stronglyhit back at Congress over the claimthat summons to Sonia and RahulGandhi in the National Herald casewere a result of “political vendetta”,saying the Centre had nothing to dowith a private complaint and nopolitician could expect immunityfrom the law. Rejecting Congress’claim that the developments werepart of a systematic targeting of
opposition parties, finance ministerArun Jaitley said the Delhi HCdecision to uphold summons to theGandhis was pursuant to a privatecomplaint.“No political vendetta. Aprivate complaint was lodged.Government had nothing to do withit. TNN

New Delhi: Congress chief SoniaGandhi invoked mother-in-law Indi-ra Gandhi to say she was n ot scaredof the government while son Rahulvowed to continue challenging thePM, in what marked a joint offensiveagainst BJP whom the Gandhi fam-ily accused of “political vendetta”over the National Herald issue.
“I am the daughter-in-law of In-dira Gandhi. I am not scared of anyone. I am not disturbed,” Soniatold reporters before leading theCongress’ protest in Lok Sabha onTuesday morning.
Coming in the backdrop of theDelhi HC order, Sonia’s suddenmove to underline her Gandhi fam-ily lineage, especially the formerpremier known as ‘Iron Lady’, re-flected a bid to rally public moodaround “political vendetta”.
Having dubbed the allegations
of cheating in the National Heraldcase as “witchhunt” by BJP, theCongress chief was seen as reviv-ing the memories of cases Indira
faced under the Janata regime af-ter being ousted from power post-Emergency.
As if on cue, Rahul dubbed thecharges involving him and motherSonia as political arm-twisting byBJP. “Let them do what they want. They can do whatever they wa nt to.I am not going to budge one inch. The same questions I am asking thePM or the government, I am goingto continue asking them,” he saidon a tour to flood-hit Tamil Nadu.
Raising the pitch on the charges,Rahul said it was “political vendet-ta” and he was “not afraid” of theconsequences of doing his job of
questioning the government as anopposition member. “This is the waythe Centre functions, the way theythink,” he said.

R ejecting Congress’s charges,Jaitley said, “No political ven-detta. A private complaint was
lodged. Government had nothing todo with it. The high court has dismis-sed their case and asked them to goand face trial. Nobody in this countryhas immunity from law. They canchallenge the orders in a higher courtor face proceedings.”
The Congress bid to mobilize sup-port across political lines was evident.Leader of opposition in Rajya SabhaGhulam Nabi Azad led the protests byaccusing the Centre of having differ-ent laws for BJP and allies, and for theopposition, “be it Congress, Trina-mool, BSP or SP”.
BJP indicated its willingness to re-taliate despite the recent attempts tobroker a deal over the GST bill. In the
upper House, Jaitley challenged Con-gress for a debate on corruption, in-cluding the National Herald issue.
In Lok Sabha, it was turmoil fromthe first minute, with MPs led by Jyoti-raditya Scindia, Deepender Hooda,Sushmita Dev, Gaurav Gogoi and Rav-neet Bittu storming into the wellshouting “down with dictatorship”and “no to political vendetta”. TheHouse was adjourned in a short timeand again after question hour was car-ried out in din.
The protests spilled over to thepost-lunch session, this time Sonialeading the charge with animated en-treaties to Trinamool MP Sudip Ban-dyopadhyay for support. The Bengaloutfit had lent its “passive” support inthe first half with members standingduring Congress sloganeering, butSonia’s lobbying saw Bandyopadhyayspeak out in the House. “The vindic-tiveness (of the government) towardsthe opposition should stop... We areprotesting together... We are united on
this issue," he said. Trinamool headMamata Banerjee gave a guardedbacking to the Congress chief.
